I laughed the whole way through seeing this for the first time. Especially after the Hoist the Colors scene at the beginning of the movie. The monster hung a fucking CHILD, not to mention countless other innocents. I'm just disappointed he didn't panic.
@rickyrincon7069 жыл бұрын
Matthew Helland Countless other innocents? All the people were hung in the beginning of the movie were pirates, including the child. They knew what the consequences would be and hence is the reason why they all decided to sing together, on the grounds of comradery. To call pirates innocent is pretty much a contradiction. In all actuality these were people who raped, killed, stole. and ruined the lives of actual innocents for the sake of their vanity, would you call the modern day Somali pirates "innocent?"
@matthewhelland92589 жыл бұрын
Rave Reviews They didn't just hang pirates, if you recall. They also hung people who helped pirates, people who were known associates of said pirates, common thieves, and just anyone who spoke out against the new rules. Basically anyone who put a toe out of line was killed. And just because he might have been an actual pirate does that mean that a child deserves to be hanged? There were PLENTY of innocents among those people he hanged. That wasn't just an act of camaraderie, it was an act of defiance. And any camaraderie came from the fact that they were being unjustly killed without even a pretense at a fair trial.

I love the "Villainous Blue Screen of Death," trope, it's one of my favorites. Just the villain being unable to comprehend that they've lost and just sort of standing by with a blank look on their face as their plans, literally or figuratively, collapse, burn, explode, and otherwise crumble apart around them.
@wintrysnowflake33852 жыл бұрын
The trope is just *chef's kiss* peak characterization, especially if the villain is a mastermind genius who thought that everything is going according to their plan and actually always had everything in their lives going to fruition by their plans, having everything in *their* control, and when they finally had their first taste of failure just by one thing they couldn't and didn't foresee and realized that, they just proceed to shut down in denial as everything just falls apart. (I'm basically describing Beckett since he seems to be the most fitting.)

Now several years later my though about this scene... Cutler Beckett is a man with brilliant, analytical but ruthless mind... He is ready to do everything for "good business" and has the brains to succeed: other people are just tools for him to be used for reaching his goals. In this scene everything that has happened so far has played exactly according to his plans (at least from his point of view) and as the Flying Dutchmann has been on his control he has lulled himself to a false sense of security that nobody can stop him from achieving his goals. After all who could steal the Flying Dutchmann from him as he owns the strongest fleet and highly trained soldiers equipped with best possible weaponry protecting it. Losing to some ragtag bunch of pirates is illogical. Now as William Turned takes control of the Flying Dutchmann and joins the pirates to sink HMS Endeavor this causes Beckett to completely freeze as the very thing he though to be "impossible" had just happened causing his plans to fall apart. This caused him to go full denial as this doesn't make any sense to him... His plan was "flawless" but then just one unexpected (and only) event he hadn't taken into an account ruined it all so this puts him into a shock (and broke him mentally). Blocking the things around Beckett desperately tries to analyze where he went wrong and why but as he cannot understand nor accept the loss of the Flying Dutchmann he just can not process what is happening. When Beckett walks down the stairs I don't think he is mentally present anymore... He is looking around with empty eyes most likely not being able to understand what is going or even grasp his own fate. After all for a man like Beckett what happened here simply couldn't be reality... In his broken mind this kind of misfortune could only happen to people who didn't plan way ahead like he did.

In my opinion, one of the greatest villain deaths in film history. The sudden realization that Beckett had when the Dutchman turned broadside against the Endeavour was all too apparent on his face, and he knew he got outplayed. And unlike the rest of his crew who were in complete panic, Beckett's slow walk onto the main deck as the carnage rages around him shows he's accepted his fate and he wanted to maintain some semblance of dignity in his final moments.

Those of you wondering why Endeavour did not open fire, consider this. It's highly likely that the gunner crew only had one broadside prepared, as they expected to meet the Black Pearl only. The Flying Dutchman was assumed sunk, and its unexpected reappearance as an enemy vessel would have thrown the gunnery crew into disarray as orders to attack the ship would likely have been met with confusion. By the time this mess was straightened out, the enemy would have already opened fire.
@Vampirewolfking9 жыл бұрын
But you still have to consider the fact that a single broadside should not have destroyed the vessel. At the battle of Trafalgar HMS Victory was under fire from Héros (74 guns), Santísima Trinidad (136), Redoutable (74) and Neptune (80) for 40 minutes and still survived to engage Redoutable in close combat.
@TheExiledTexan9 жыл бұрын
Vampirewolfking True. This whole scene is sloppy. The filmmakers obviously didn't want to have another battle after the one that occurred in the maelstrom minutes earlier, and only wanted to tie up loose ends by killing Beckett. However, as you said, Endeavour wouldn't have realistically gone down this quickly, and would have been reinforced by the EITC armada afloat nearby. It's a shame; I would have preferred that battle to the one in the maelstrom.
@Vampirewolfking9 жыл бұрын
The One™ I agree, the Pirate armada was also pointless, i mean it was cool when they all hoisted their colours, and then just the Pearl sailed to meet the enemy.

Vampire, yes but ever wondered why the Black Pearl and The Flying Dutchman were so intimidating? I doubt their cannons (few compared to the Endeavor) were weak and let's remember that this isn't exact history, it has some fiction such as The Flying Dutchman diving so why can't both ships have extremely powerful cannons?

The reason why Lord Beckett did not give the command to fire at the ships because he was shocked that The Flying Dutchman ship survived the malestrom. Beckett did not know that Will Turner stabbed Davy Jones' heart and that Davy Jones was dead and that Will Turner became the ship's new captain. Therefore, because Beckett did see or notice these events, he thought that Davy Jones was still alive and was sailing the Flying Dutchman. Beckett thought that The Flying Dutchman would overpower him along with The Black Pearl. So, Beckett went into a state of shock and could not give any orders to fire at both ships on each side.

There's a very simple reason as to why Beckett didn't give the order to fire: He was in a state of shock. Imagine seeing your ultimate weapon being turned against you. Furthermore, Beckett was no soldier. In fact, I never saw him commanding a military force in combat until this scene. Simply put, he was too stunned to respond effectively. Sorta like when something so shocking happens that you just shut down. That's what happened here. He was so stunned that he just shut down.

Endeavour was a freaking monster of a ship. If Beckett had only ordered his men to fire at will, that monstrous warship would have taken care of both ships in the matter of Seconds. Come on, Endeavour has twice as many cannons on one side as both the Pearl and the Dutchman combined! Why beckett instead chose to just give up instead of at least offering a fight, I will never understand.

Randygandalf95 realistically to the facts in this movie, he would have lost.... Why? Its the Dutchman, it can sail under water, so you can never really sink it, plus Orlando is Davy Jones now, so if the black pearl sunk, it goes to Davy Jones locker, and he can bring it back :) soo to this movie the facts are right, everybody saying oh these ships would have died , well that's true if it was real life , but in this movie these aren't your normal ships, black pearl is the fasted ship in the sea, and the Dutchman can sail under the sea, :p any other ship would have died, but these are superpower ships :) I honestly wish they made a movie about the real pirates of the carribean.....these moves are more about legends and myths

"No interest in revenge" pirates.fandom.com/wiki/Cutler_Beckett "After packing his bags, young Cutler headed for London, the capital of Great Britain, where he found employment in the East India Trading Company. Cutler worked at the London EITC Office for several months, proving himself to be a good executive. One day, Cutler's superiors assigned him to a tour of duty at the EITC office on Gibraltar. He quickly boarded the merchantman Lindesfarne in London, hoping to finally fulfill his ambition of seeing the world.[6] However, during the journey, off the coast of Spain, the Lindesfarne was captured by the pirate ship Le Requin, captained by the Frenchman Christophe-Julien de Rapièr. Cutler unwisely angered the pirate captain, telling him that his fancy clothes were out-fashioned in both London and Paris. The pirate captain did not like Cutler's attitude so he allowed his crew to "play" with the youngster, and they tortured him for days. While waiting for the ransom money, the pirate crew forced Cutler and other prisoners to clean their ship; whipping them if they didn't do their work well. Still furious at his son, Jonathan Beckett Sr. refused to pay the ransom, but the EITC official Reginald Marmaduke Bracegirdle-Penwallow sent a ransom for Cutler, and Captain de Rapièr freed the young boy. The experience in captivity left Cutler with eternal hatred for pirates.[6]"

I mean, yes, he’s certainly a business man, representing the exact mission of Imperialist Britain: capitalism. But I don’t see how you see heroism in that. This scene is easily one of my favorite in film. Beckett, realizing he's lost, calmly accepts defeat, no matter how exponential it may be. Plain for everyone to see. I may be reading into it a little too much though. This scene (to me) completely justifies anti-authoritarianism to me (although I don't promote a number of the things that stem from anti-authoritarianism). It explicitly and graphically shows the cost and consequences of control and power and what happens at its inevitable end when it all comes crashing down.

The music portrays a requiem for Beckett instead of a triumphant victory of the protagonists. Looking at it from this perspective, Beckett’s ship and mind are both being torn apart with no hope of survival or acts of self-preservation. We are put into the shoes of Beckett because all of the camera time and dialogue is mostly about him. I don’t feel a sense of justice being dulled out but the opposite which gives this scene something I’m not used to at all with typical villain death scenes. This empathetic approach for a villain is quite remarkable. Very good work from the director (Gore Verbinski) and the composer (Hans Zimmer).
