So many people in the comments going "Just make them wipe out Mordor no problem" please keep in mind that the Oathbreakers were ghosts. Sauron specialized in necromancy and dark magic to control the dead (thats why the Nazgul and Barrow Wights deferred to Sauron). Bringing an army of spectres to Mordor would have been suicide because the moment they were close enough, Saurons magic would easily subvert their will and have them slaughter the armies of Man. What Aragorn did was use his brain and his honor instead of going "Lets bring undead to fight against the guy who specializes in controlling the undead". One of Saurons many titles was The Necromancer after all

For those who don't know the lore, the ghosts' oath was to protect Gondor's interior, not fight outside of it. Their oath was fulfilled. If Aragorn tried to keep them to fight outside of Gondor's borders, they could have cursed Aragorn like they were cursed since he would be breaking his part of the oath. At the time of the first war with Sauron, the one these guys were going to fight in, Gondor's borders reached Mordor, but they no longer do. On top of that, Sauron specializes in controlling the undead. Wraiths and ghosts included. He is the Necromancer. Taking them there to fight Sauron would have been a bad idea for a lot of reasons. They would have fallen under Sauron's influence.

@@whyareyouhere3698 I am tired of that too! I thoroughly dislike purism just as much as Tolkien thoroughly dislikes allegory. I do understand where book lovers come from, and I have read up on the lore too, but these movies mean so much to me, so many other people, and to an entire frickin country that I can't simply favor one over the other. They are both equally impactful in different ways. Maybe the book does stuff better, it has the time to explain the history, the cultures and geography, plus going more into Denethor would have been nice to explain why he is an a-hole, and I wish the Elves led by Haldir arrived at the Black Gate instead of Helm's Deep, a callback to the Battle of the Last Alliance with Elves and Men. Though Honestly, I prefer the way the Army of the Dead was handled in the films. I am fine with the Stone of Erech thing not being included as that would rely on more backstory. The City of the Dead, the center of the ghostly activity, equally makes sense for Aragorn to arrive at. The Dead Men going to Minas Tirith and then having their oaths fulfilled to me also makes sense, as though most of Gondor (especially its capital) has been saved due to their help. Bringing in the various men and lords of the fiefs as reinforcements, or the grey company, would again rely on lots of explaining and screentime to do. Some even moan and complain that the army was too OP, well what do you expect from thousands of intangible beings, who only can be struck by Anduril, are similar in power to wraiths, project terror before them, and wield all manner of weaponry?

The end was one of the innovations of Peter Jackson for the movies, but one that I heartily approve of. In having Aragorn have to face the temptation to betray the oath he made to the deadmen of Dunharrow, we see a bit of a parallel with what will have to take place to destroy the Ring. Gimli is being pragmatic and voices the temptation that anyone would have to face: you have found an invincible army, betray your oath and keep them around a little longer. You can even rationalize it under the "lesser of evils": you're only going to betray them for a "little while longer" and just so you can beat Sauron. But in betraying his oath to the dead, Aragorn would become JUST AS BAD as Sauron; if he is not going to fall to evil, he must honor his oath and discharge this army that has proven so valuable. And I love how Viggo Mortensen says "I hold your oath fulfilled. Go, and be at peace." with genuine affection. Like I said, not in the books, but done by Jackson to great effect.

@@lauraknight5973 Actually, yes. This trilogy does a poor job of portraying it, but, Frodo was actually well tuned with the ring and could effectively use its power while he wore it. In fact, when certain others looked at him, they could see a powerful and terrifying white aura surrounding him. The elves could sense both great power and great evil coming from him. While climbing Mount Doom, Gollum attacked he and Sam (again) and knocked Sam out for a moment. After Sam gained his footing again, he saw Frodo as a figure in a glowing white robe with a wheel of fire in his chest where the ring was. Out of that wheel and Frodo's mouth he heard "Begone, and trouble me no more! If you ever touch me again, you shall be cast yourself into the Fire of Mt. Doom." To this day, it's unknown if that was Frodo or the ring itself speaking through him. Sauron had reason to fear at this point because he knew SOMEONE was using his ring, but somehow he could not find it. He only knew that a truly resilient Hobbit had the ring and he was on his way to destroy it. By this point Sauron was quaking in his boots, truly.

Edit: I don’t think the undead army could do anything to Aragorn. First he was from a true line of kings and that is why they served him in the first place. Second, once they agreed to servitude, I think they were bound to him and had to serve him until he released them; otherwise they could just force/threaten him to release them from their eternal torment without any need to actually do anything for him. Just a guess though.

In the story, the Dead did not go to Minas Tirith. They only secured the ships. Aragorn travelled with more than Legolas and Gimli, though. Through the passage of the Dead, he had 30 Rangers of the North with him, as well as the two sons of Elrond. Once it was clear the ships were headed up the river, the coast of Gondor, where many troops had been left to garrison, didn't need such protection. Aragorn summoned these men as well, but had no way to get them to Minas Tirith in time... until he called on the Dead to seize the ships. Once they had done this, they were released, and the ship carried Aragon and his new army straight up river. The Dead had no power to physically harm, only to terrify. The pirates, scared out of their minds, dove overboard, to either swim to the far shore, or to drown.
@simenhartford7206 Жыл бұрын
Actually they might have been able to physically harm (Legolas didn't know whether their blades would still bite or not), it was just that their presence alone was so effective that they didn't need to use anything else but fear.

Good editing. If you understand Irish folklore concerning a concept called a "Geas" it pretty much turns out just like this. You swear an oath or have a "Geas" placed upon you in which certain actions can result in your demise or have you cursed. Aragorn couldn't wisely get them to go further than strictly the defence of Gondor. To force this ghost army to go any further risks having this curse reverse itself back on Aragorn and his friends. This geas is based upon honour after all.

This is their meeting after meet Aragon and deciding to join the battle: Ghost King: Our king is back, we have to fulfill our oath, I am tired of living with this condition, no beer, no lady and no party for eternity , we have to join him in battle, our job is just to run over enemy, anyone agrees ? Army : *YES !!!*

fun fact for the scene with the "skull avalanche" flooding into the cave they actually took a mold of a real skull and made 2000 copies of it! one of the best practical effects scenes in movie history imho. these days its way too easy to have a mountain on props flow like water using a simple computer program like Blender. but imho the easy digital route will never look as good.

In the books they exit the mountain pass with the army of the dead, invisible to all but still coldly there and they travel fast through the region with still inhabited villages which close all doors and windows while the Dead and living (Aragorn had also at about 30-40 rangers with him along with Legolas and Gimli) passing by in the darkness.

For those who said Aragorn should've hold them until the last battle but let me ask you this: Would you rather bring with you an army that thousands years ago, feared Sauron and switched their allegiance to him? Sauron who, even in his weakened lighthouse form, still holds sway over all dark forces in the world and can easily influences them on a whim, be it with his sheer willpower or false promise of release, both of which Sauron definitely excels at. Even if Aragorn wasn't a just and good king. It would still be a massive risk to have an army that the enemy potentially holds an instant remote control over.

Imagine being the Sauron within this campaign. You have gathered all the forces throughout the known world. All the might and tactics are on your side only to see your enemy pull out a huge or the ubermacht of deus ex machinas | literal hordes of ghosts upon you. As a necromancer Sauron must found that insulting lol!

Maybe he was waiting for a challenge. As doing all of this stuff with those ugly people, likely tired him out. He needed someone or something to come from left field to break up the monotony of “winning” so easy. His horsemen that wore black bed sheets, were 2nd to none! Just imagine having to dress up in that garb, and have to ride around on horses to chase hobbits for a ring.

Love the reaction of the sailors and orcs the moment they see the ghost army charging. Talk about a major "holy shit" moment. Closest we will likely ever come to seeing a Zerg rush on screen.

The Ghost Army is the most overpowered army in this trilogy. Can't be physically hurt but can hurt physical things. They're faster and can fly, too. Ain't no army in the franchise can go against them.
