These are so beautiful!! I love the date ones, but my husband does not like dates. He would love these pistachio ones!! Is there a substitute if mahlab(sp?) is not available?

Just leave it out, it a flavor enhancer, if you are looking for another date maamoul, I advice you to make these too, so addicting beware: kzbin.info/www/bejne/r5u8Xpx9mstpitUsi=XpfyagOGlM6IVqsZ

There is absolutely no need for powdered sugar. They are delicious just as they are.

I’d like to make these cookies for Easter but I need your help on something please. I went to the Middle Eastern store near me to find the Mablab, which they had, but I’m not sure if it’s fresh since I’ve never used it before and have nothing to compare it with. Online it said it’s supposed to smell like almonds and cherries? This doesn’t smell anything like almonds and cherries, the closest I can compare it to is it smells like fine mild wood shavings, I’m not going to ruin the recipe by putting in a spice that’s gone bad. Can you help me with how it’s supposed to smell? Thank you!
