I have a little true-life story that may amuse: It was my first day in 8th grade and my first class was “Gym” and we were all lined up around the basketball court waiting for the new “Gym” teacher who was just starting that year. Finally, a 30-ish man with a buzz cut dressed in chinos, gray “Navy” t-shirt and, if memory serves, Joe Lapchick high-tops came onto the floor with a solemn-faced little boy of four, maybe five years in tow. After he introduced himself, he told us our first class was to run laps, which we did and while we trudged our circuits, our teacher proceeded to demonstrate to the lad how to dribble, cut, fake, and shoot and then issued stern commands and corrections as the tyke tried to duplicate his moves. The year was 1952 and the court was Aliquippa High School. The teacher was Press Maravich and the little boy has always held a special place in my heart and I feel so privileged to have witnessed the first day the legendary never-to-be-equalled “Pistol Pete” Maravich set foot on a basketball court. RIP, little lad, you were one of a kind.

He tild me I needed to focus on baseball because the competition I was really against were guys around the country ("The States") would probably be players I never would actually play against. A gew years later I thanked Pete for his advice and told him I had quit baseball after my sophmore year but came back the next year and wasntbsupposed ti play but made 2nd team All-America team and 2nd round pick. Pete's kindly smile and said Inwould habe been a 1st round pick, then asked me "So how muvh money did that 2nd round pick vost ya?" Thanks for your interest. Watching Pete's handles, then state of the art, in this vintage footage and comparing it to today's game, the change from the way carrying the ball used to be called is obvious. Most modern hesi's and many cross-overs, in fact the normal ballhandling on almost every trip down the court, would have been called for carrying back in the day. Evolution? I think so, but one more reason why comparing the "greatest" from one generation to another is impossible.

Would be welcomed and praised, his teammates would Rally behind him , He would’ve made them better ball players, Today his team would let him teach them and together they would be champions ! Instead of being Jealous, envious and some even back then refused to pass him the ball no matter how much trouble they were in, some tried to play 4 man team and played as if he weren’t even on the floor ! Instead of playing great like they could have their legacy is and always will be in my book crybaby losers ! Pistol Pete is the best there ever was, he was just born in the wrong era of time, The white Basketball world wasn’t ready for him,but the Globetrotters saw his talent and embraced him for his skills they were wise enough to see that with him they would have filled areas and venues all over the world people wanted to see him and be entertained , he should have taken their offer, wonder how many times he wished he had ? @Tong Zou Honestly, I'm looking at the footage, and not a lot of them would have been from outside the arc. Pete loved to penetrate enough to take that elbow jumper. As amazing as that night was, it still stunned me how mercurial he was. He'd score five points on his end and then do something to hand back four.

I saw three Maravich baskets that would have probably been outside the 19-9 foot arch.

@@jrshooter17 I'm sure if there was a line he'd step back and shoot it. He wasn't that far off without it. Make or miss? That I dont know.

Different game as far as foul contact goes, too. Today's players would all foul out in the first quarter under those rules.

It’s a simple game. Put thee ball in thee basket and you win. These teams could beat any team today if played under old rules.

This looks more like a Kentucky tape . Start of every clip, Kentucky has the ball. I see Maravich missing Free Throws, Charging, missing shots...haven't seen Maravich hit a single shot. I see a lot of Issel, where's the Maravich?

those were some low lights for a sec missing 2 free throws then 2 turnovers to 2 and 1s. seem like Kentucky regs. no one shooting free throws like Rick Barry did either
