the crabsteering on the manure-sprayer is to reduce soilcompaction. Such sprayers wheigh alot and when you crabsteer you double the surface area that gets compacted, this is usually done when the drivingconditions are subpar. i.e in wet conditions the soil is really loose and you can sink in way too deep and get stuck

A Garratt (also known as Beyer-Garratt) is a type of steam locomotive that is articulated in three parts. Its boiler is mounted on the centre frame, and two steam engines are mounted on separate frames, one on each end of the boiler. Articulation permits larger locomotives to negotiate curves and lighter rails that might restrict large rigid-framed locomotives. Many Garratt designs aimed to double the power of the largest conventional locomotives operating on their railways, thus reducing the need for multiple locomotives and crews.

That Garrat is indeed a real locomotive, and its wheel arrangement is "4-8-2+2-8-4." Also, the red thing between the wheels on the Flying Scotsman is a third cylinder inside the frames. It was common on British locomotives for a while, but it never really caught on here in the U.S, and 3 cylinder locomotives should have each of the cylinders offset by 33.333 degrees instead of 90.

6:13 It’s the Queensland Railway Garratt, there is only 1 left and it is on display at the Ipswich workshops. It’s number 1009, it was built in 1950, it’s a 2-8-2+2-8-2 because of the amount of wheels it didn’t get a regular classification like other QR locomotives they were given BG, it weighs 137 ton, carries 6 ton of coal, 3800 gallons of water, it’s driving wheels are 51’ in diameter and it’s cylinders are 13 1/4”x26”

For the crab walking, it's to make compaction more uniform across the field. Also could help in soft ground to prevent getting stuck. Also, crops grow different in different situations. By crab walking, the compaction is spread out more, making how firm the soil is more uniform across the field. This makes it easier to prescribe different treatments. Most people will work up the ground once the fertilizer has been applied, which defeats the purpose of crab walking. Some ground is better to "no till" which could see the benefits.

Crab walking helps widen your footprint when traveling over a field, but also, you greatly reduce your turning radius as well. Just a swanky feature. Honestly I’m not sure how many big time farmers actually crab walk them, but I’d say they all use it to reduce turning radius.

The locomotive is a Garratt (or Beyer-Garratt) which is a type of articulated steam engine mounted on two frames with a large water tank in the front, and large coal bunker/tender in the back that were primarily designed for heavy freight or "banking" other locomotives up steep inclines, they typically aimed to improving efficiency by being able to carry heavier loads with more power compared to other engines. The one in you showcase appears to be based on both the NSWGR AD60 and the ASG (Australian standard Garratt), with the AD60 being standard gauge and the ASG a narrow gauge Garratt used by QLD, TAS, SA and WA during WWII.

A Garrett is one specific type of articulated steam locomotive. The short version is that a Garrett is pistons-apart, a Meyer is pistons-together, and a Mallet has the pistons pointing the same way like the Big Boy. Garretts have been tried in many cases, in Britain for example the LMS tried a class for freight that was hampered by having to use the same wheelsets as the locomotives it was meant to relieve. There was also a larger one-off in british service - I *think* an LNER design - that saw most of its use banking freight trains alongside the one-off 0-10-0 "Big Bertha".

It’s a real steam engine. It’s the British answer to articulating locomotives. It also spreads the weight out allowing the locomotive to be larger yet run on older, lighter railed track without damaging it.

The tracked vehicle does have tank steering. Tank steering is just when you can activate each sides acceleration individually so you do not angle the wheels in order to turn. Early tanks up until the Panzer 4 in WW2 operated like this. What you are referring to is Neutral steering where the tracks move in opposite direction to achieve spinning on a point, or can move at varried speeds in order to turn while maintaining momentum.
@pugz3230

I'm guessing the crab-walking is for stuff like course correction. It's not ideal, but there's probably some situations where it's better than the alternatives.
@Nevir202
@Nevir202 6 ай бұрын
I don't think it's to use when moving over the crops themselves, I think it's for alignment when getting set up to make a pass, without a bunch of turns that would work your tires down into the earth. You can get straight with the rows, and then fine tune your alignment left/right while moving forward.
@Ronald.Golleher
@Ronald.Golleher 6 ай бұрын
It's to help reduce soil compaction. Instead of all the weight being applied over two tracks if the wheels are in line, it's spread over four tracks. Sure, it compacts *more* soil, but it compacts more soil *less*. Jump in the mud twice in the same spot, you'll sink in more. Jump in two different spots, you'll have more footprints but none will sink in as far.

fun fact! the second build technically did have tank steering. most if not all old tanks only used one tread to turn the tank up until the second world war where country's started experimenting with double differentials which allowed "neutral steering" where both treads were able to move simultaneously in opposite directions. Although they experimented in ww2 they weren't really used within tank design until the cold war.

As I recall there was something about Soviet tracked vehicles mainly the T-34 tank instead of having a proper way to hold tracks in place just added a wedgw that would hammer loose bolts back in as they passed The 'Stalinets S60' is probably an agricultural tractor, so basic it doesn't even have neutral steering. The biggest flaw of anything with Wingz mod is that motor-powered elevators have a tendency to lock up in high-G manouvers.

@Ronald.Golleher

A duplex would be more two engine sets on a rigid frame. Like PRR T1 or S1 classes. A Garratt type is one of three most common articulated locomotives, especially regarding steam. Garratt has the boiler sitting on a separate frame with both ends free to articulate, Mallet where rear set is fixed and front articulates (Big Boy, Challenger, many American articulated locomotives), and Meyer would have two articulating sets under a single boiler frame (most similar to modern locomotives).
