My vote is for the six to live on. You’ve got those blokes in Canada that get old engines in much worse shape going and back to daily driver status with little more than a hammer, file, smoke wrench and a few screwdrivers and wrenches. If you start throwing modern v8 motors in this car then you wind up replacing everything that makes it go and stop. Motor, transmission, rear end, brakes, suspension, wheels and everything attached to them. You have a shop and field full of go fast cars and trucks. A slow one like this has its own charms. You guys just got back from the Hot Rod Power tour where you spent a week playing with slow 6 shooters and you all had a good time.

I understand you fully about an upgraded engine swap. That said, there is something about THIS ride that begs for every effort short of a rebuild to be made to keep the original flat six under the hood. Pulling off the head, playing valve bongos with gentle ball-peen hammer taps (pretty sure there are some stuck valves in the two bubbly cylinders!), wire-wheeling the head, making sure the lifters are functional and honing the cylinders will go a long way in letting you know if this mill will live to go down the road. If the cylinder walls are too ridge-y or pitted after you get the valves to work... time for an engine swap! Cool episode - this rig has my attention!!!
@MattsRageFitGarage2 жыл бұрын
Yep, I always enjoy seeing the original stuff restored and fully functioning as intended. Very rare to see stuff like this these days, usually people rip that stuff out for something better. Also your community here is absolutely great and i love the fact that you listen to your people while you work on these engines which is fantastic . Now , the reason i decided to comment is because i’d really like you to give that engine in particular a real second chance . Big fan of old V8’s here even if i’m European (Romanian,but live in the UK) . Why don’t you try to restore that engine instead of swaping it ? I know it would be much easier to find parts and stuff for the newer ones but can’t you make an exception this one time and actually strip the original apart and fix it back to brand new ? I mean when it started the first time , it just remembered me of that “Thriller” video of Michael Jackson when his car runs out of gas in the woods . I swear to God that Plymouth engine sounds absolutely fabulous when it’s on its normal idle . You get that very old kind of engine idle . Please take it in consideration if you can . I owned a 57 2 door Savoy like this one. Mine was red and white and had the lower Savoy spear trim. It was a wonderful and very temperamental car. It also had the flathead in it. Mine always suffered from vapor lock and I was never able to fully stop it. These cars are rare especially the 2 door models. Hard tops even more so. They are very prone to rust so keep it under cover as much as possible. These cars rot quickly. As for motor choices a poly 318 would be period correct when doing a swap. With a 4 barrel carb it will run beautifully. Whatever you choose, please keep it in the Chrysler line up. Also, enjoy doing those double wheel cylinders on front brakes. Those were a blast to do. 😉

I have an old Farmall super C that has poor ring seal and smokes like a freight train. one day on a whim I thought maybe the rings are gummed up and stuck so I poured blue Wolfe degreaser down each cylinder and let it sit a few minutes and cranked it over. When it started cranking slower from friction I added penetrating oil and cranked it several times, then I flushed the cylinders with gas and put the plugs back in. It fired up and smoked for a while, however, it started to clear up. I changed the oil to 30 wt. and the more it runs the less it smokes. It still smokes on start up and a little on holding back but it is definitely improved! May be just a fluke, but I can't justify an overhaul on a tractor I just use on occasion. Love this car. If it was mine and I had the money (and the know how), I'd restore this as a luxury cruiser. Nicer seats, comfortable interior. I'd keep the patina on the out side though. It gives the car personality.

But you should have it painted. You don't want the body to rust, as rust is cancer and must be cut out. You can't cover it up.

That much heavy oil directly into the cylinders, he was lucky he ever got it to fire. A good dose of diesel fuel or penetrating oil, would have lubed the cylinder walls, and not made it so non-combustable. I would have thought the plugs were completely fouled, coated in that goo.
@Rusty_Dents2 жыл бұрын
I'm ten minutes into the video and was wondering if I had missed something. Pouring oil into the cylinder is never going to allow the plugs to fire. Surely that was for content and drama lol

1st off i am glad you have not given up on it, or ripped it out to drop in a SBC. I would NOT watch ANY more of your videos IF you did that!!!!! The head is EASY to remove on a flathead 6, the sump probably can be removed with the engine in place, so you could rering it free up the valves put her back together again. IF you do get it running as is?? A few heat cycles, let it get fully warmed up, and let it cool down, do that a few times the rings might free up and come back to life. That starter has put in the Hard yards to get it running!! Smoke; burning off the products added in the cylinders!! Dylan you have been around cars long to know when an engine is tired or not, reringing the engine will not cost a huge amount.

Engine swaps, especially swapping an inline 6 like this for a V8 are all over KZbin and boring as watching paint dry. Fixing an old inline 6 like this is a LOT more interesting. And hopping up an old 6 like this one would be even better. I would watch videos fixing this engine. I seriously doubt I would waste my time on another V8 swap.

I would drop in a 318 or 360 Magnum engine from a Ram, Dakota, or Durango. They are very reliable power plants, parts are plenty, and I believe the intake can be changed to install a carburetor.
@chevy67942 жыл бұрын
Yes it can. Different angle on intake bolts though so you need the right intake or re drill the heads. Also if you want a mechanical pump you need to put an older LA front cover on. The cam also needs the lobe for it. Magnum is a roller motor so you need a roller cam with the lobe. Distributors also can interchange with LA but I believe you have to have the correct distributor gear.
@BoringIntrovert19822 жыл бұрын
@@chevy6794 Honestly if I was looking for an engine I could just get in, and down the road I go... Then it would be an un modified Magnum V8. I would say the 8L V10, but I heard it's a pain finding crankshaft position sensors for them.

@Kent Teffeteller I know, but he did say possibly a more modern engine. As a restomod perfectly acceptable. Period restoration, 318 LA for sure. Numbers matching, it's time to tear down that flathead.
@BoringIntrovert19822 жыл бұрын
@@michaelbenardo5695 Maybe I'm just stuck in this weird 90's spot where the obd2 technology wasn't overly complicated like it is now. Take my '97 Ram 318 for example. I can hop in it everyday, and she'll fire up without a stumble. Keep in mind her entire powertrain has nearly 230k without a rebuild. Other than normal pm's she's had a plenum gasket replaced in 2009, a map sensor in 2009, cat in 2012, water pump in 2013 & 2021, a crankshaft sensor in 2018, downstream O2 sensor in 2018. Last summer she threw codes for misfires & crankshaft sensor. Turns out it was only crappy gas. Other than the original A/C compressor about to give out, She's been trouble free this year.. Had my truck been obd1, I'd been doing the key dance. Older? Then here comes the parts cannon. If you can find parts. I expect a period correct for a full restoration. However, he's open to idea's for possibly a more modern engine, if the flathead is too far gone.

The carburetor shown is an early Carter "Ball & Ball" unit. Not OEM on Mopar sixes since 1954..I think the OEM (1958,) Ball and Ball Single carb, at one time, was swapped out. The early unit had a "divorced" "Sisson" choke....The correct BBS carb used an integral choke.. My views tell me the engine _might_ be correct, or ,a hodge-podge of parts from various years. It _does_ have the year-correct heat shield, but the sparkplug wire loom is from a much earlier engine....A view of the engine serial stamped into the block would be necessary to confirm this... Anyhow- Nice job reviving it!

well thats why i put oil in the cyls of an engine thats been sitting a long time and rotate it wo the plugs in. the surface rust can wear out or brake the rings if you don't
