One piece of advice that's helped me with regards to wood pellets is t dump the bag into a sealable rubber bin. That'll do two things . . . - help keep them fresh and dry - and allow the wood dust to settle to the bottom of the bin. This way I shake the dust down and scoop from the top. This will help in motor and auger operations as it minimizes the fine dust from "gumming" up the drive mechanisms. When the bin is empty I dump the dust in my firepit, or whatever works for you. These arn't issues with the Pit Boss as it would apply to any pellet BBQ.

I’ve had my Pitt boss 2 years, and I finally had to take it to the scrap yard. They will last you 2 maybe 3 years if you keep them dry. I bought the biggest model and it was great for about the first year. When I took it to the scrap yard I set it next to dozens of other pit bosses that were already there.

Today was -10 celcius (Montreal Canada) and we cooked 2 34oz T-bones. with side order of shrimps. I love my Pit Boss. No more propane for me. Bought it last July (2018). Best bang for the buck. Ribs, sausage, chicken, b-e-a-u-t-i-f-u-l-l-y cooked . BTW if i may add adjusting the chimney top helps regulate the temperature. Great video. Cheers

I have the exact same model and love it. So versatile and easy to use. I’m not sure why you find the upper rack useless. When I’m making barbecue for family and friends I use that rack space for an additional slab of ribs. Good video, but be certain to follow the start up cycle instructions properly. That is, begin in the smoke setting with the lid open until you hear the roar of the flame pot. There’s no mistaking that wonderful sound.

Great video. One good thing to remember is that moisture can build up in the auger chamber and shaft, plugging the auger. Good idea is to clean out shaft and hopper box of pellets if it sit for a while. By just empty the hopper and letting the auger clean itself out by running it out of Pellets. Saw dust from pellets will build up in the auger area and plug it. If you live in cold weather areas and rainy, good idea to clean it out. Some people use a spaghetti strainer to clean saw dust from pellets before adding them. I myself have a xl rancher pit boss and live in the mountains and had mind plug up, due to the cold and snow and bent the auger shaft and the auger motor had to be replace. Note moisture came from the warm day cold day and snow. (Dew) If anyone thinking about buying a pit boss just like the man said "good smoker" and grill go for it!! Dont spend money on $$$ on a Traeger you're just paying for the name. I have used the open Flame for steaks.... Let me tell You their great cooked that way! Set it around 400 let it heat up and 2 to 4 min a side depending on thickness and your done. Cooking tip season steaks before cooking to let salt do its thing.

Love my pitt boss. For the heat shield that slides to expose flame I drilled hole in end of barbecue , slid a threaded rod thru and into a hole that I put on the lip sticking up on heat shield. Put nut on threaded rod on each side of lip to secure rod and when I want to expose food to direct heat I can now pull from outside the end of barbecue. Works perfect.

Allen - Is there a video or could you share more about the parts you used to do this? Sounds like a great idea!
@allanbailey7594
@allanbailey7594 4 жыл бұрын
@@JesseLoether Not really that much more I can say. On the lip of the cover that slides to expose the flame pot below , drill a hole thru the lip that sticks up to accommodate 1/4 or 3/8 threaded rod. Once hole is drilled slide the threaded rod thru to see where hole needs to be drilled on outside wall of barbecue. Rod is then pushed thru from outside of grill and then thru the lip you put hole in. Put a nut on each side of lip to secure rod to it and keep it in place when you pull the threaded rod that is exposed on the outside of barbecue. If you look at pit boss that comes this way you will be able to do yours. Cost is minimal.

I have the Pit Boss Pro Series 820 (the one sold at Lowes) and while only having it now for about 6 months, these Pit Boss units are fantastic. I upgraded from a Masterbuilt ThermoTemp XL (propane) smoker. Loved that unit, but having to refill the wood chips was annoying (and risky). Bought this and in the first 6 months I've done pork ribs, chicken, tri tip, brisket, and pizza on it - all were fantastic. Contrary to this video, start it in 'smoke' mode with the lid open. This takes 3-4 minutes in 80 degree outside temps. Doing it as he does in the video puts too many pellets inside and causes it to "overshoot" the temp you set - requiring it to cool down before cooking. His unit in the video is great, but the Pro Series has some nice upgrades: ceramic coated grates in a diamond pattern, two meat temp probes built in to the control panel, easier adjustment of the "P" settings (smoke setting), solid side panel (on the right) with grill tool pegs on front instead of the side, and a foldable front panel. Side note - you can drill a tiny hole in the right side of your smoker and another small hole in the sliding center heat shield panel and connect in a gun cleaning rod...lets you open and close the broiler panel without removing the grill grates or reaching down with a tool to open/close the panel. VERY satisfied with this purchase...Pit Boss makes a stout product that has most if not all of the same features (and in some cases more) than Traeger units do (with the exception of the wi-fi connectivity) for a good $200 less for an equivalent size. Also, you can run this one on a 100w inverter when you camp/etc. and don't have a generator. The manual walks you through the process of disconnecting the glow plug and manually lighting it. I have yet to try this, but taking a 12v battery and being able to run this away from power is a huge plus.

I went and checked a pit boss out at Wal-Mart and opened the lid and the inside was rusting. That wasn't a good sign but I continued to look and found that the quality wasn't what I was looking for in a pellet grill. Then I watched your video and you said something about the temperature swings. I need something that isn't going to have that big of swings. I ended up ordering the rec tec because of the reviews. Your review was very helpful in my decision and I thank you for that. When I get mine I will post and tell you how I like the Rec Tec. Thank you again my friend.

That was an Outstanding review. I just purchased a Pit Boss 520D2 from Academy, mine too was already assembled. The staff at academy said the Pellet box and Cooking drum are already assembled from the factory, so the legs, side shelf and chimney are the only real items to be assembled by the customer. I really appreciate your break down of how the Pellet feed and the Fire starter work. I am use to a MasterBuilt 30" Electric smoker which as you know uses an Electric Element for heat and to burn wood chips for smoke. The MasterBuilt was always very touchy when it was damp outside and would trip the GCFI breaker. I'm hoping the PB does not have this issue, I've used it twice so far and all is good. Thanks again for a really great review.

We bought an 820 Pro PitBoss just before Thanksgiving. A friend recommended it and we followed his advice. So glad we did, this is awesome, We have an old vertical smoker which we like but it does not compare to this one. We have experimented with different meats and rubs and sauces and techniques and have never been disappointed in the outcome. I really liked the review this gentleman gave, his recommendations are right on target.

Thanks for the review. I have owned a different model Pit Boss identical in operation to the one in this video for a year now and just love it. The spot welds on the lift handle broke about 8 months ago, however but I replaced it with a gate handle and it works perfectly and looks good. Otherwise I’ve had no issues. I do have a different opinion about smoking vs grilling. I feel Pit Boss pellet grills are at their best when grilling because of the flame broiler. I’ve never had such a perfect sear as with this feature. And with the proper technique you can easily open and close the broiler with tongs without removing the cooking surfaces at all. But I also think it does baking and hot smoking very well. Because of this versatility I’ve completely abandoned propane grills. Have a great day!

Hey man thanks so much - I thought this was an excellent review and I couldn't agree with you more - I have this exact same Pit Boss and I absolutely love it! I had actually never even thought about firing it up to bake a pizza, but that is exactly what I'll be doing this weekend :-) To answer your question about assembly, it is really not difficult at all, but because it is rather heavy I would definitely suggest having a 2nd person. That heaviness is one reason why I love this smoker though - it is very solidly built and I think it is better than any other smoker on the market. I've done 20 pound briskets, big slabs of pork belly, 4 racks of St. Louis style ribs, huge pork shoulders, and more and they have all turned out amazing! The turkey breasts I smoked for Thanksgiving last week turned out so delicious that my wife said next year she isn't even going to put a whole bird in the oven - she told me to just smoke more breasts! When folks (like my in-laws) who have always said they don't like smoked foods give me compliments and devour everything I cook on this smoker, that is a true indication that I have the right equipment. Keep on smoking!!!

I have a Traeger at home (first purchase) and a Pitt Boss (at the lake). Love them both for smoking. When cooking steaks, the Traeger sucks as it does not get hot enough to sear. The Pitt Boss has a feature that opens the grill to direct flame that allows the grill to get much hotter and sear the meat. This feature makes the Pitt Boss much better than the Traeger.

Biggest complaint about the pellet grill is that I live in the Houston area and it is very hard to keep your pellets dry to get the full heat out of them. I've tried keeping them in sealed buckets and short of keeping them in the house, it's almost impossible. Also if you leave any pellets in the hopper when you are done, and you don't use it for a while they get full of moisture and will not fire.

If you are having trouble with your grill overshooting your temp setting try lowering the “P” setting on your grill. Mine goes to six every time I start it by default. To change this setting I use a toothpick in the little hole on the front face. Each time you depress the little plunger inside this hole it changes this P setting. The P setting number is displayed in the lcd display. During your demonstration yours was set on 4. This setting controls the on/ off cycle time of the burner. Lower P numbers equal shorter on time and longer off times. I’ve found lower settings help to keep my unit from overshooting it’s set point. Like you I only use the upper grill when I’m smoking three racks of ribs.

Thanks for the insight, I did buy a Pro Series 850 so wish me luck. One thing you mentioned was having to buy wood pellets and that was a drawback. I had a BPS by Masterbuilt electric smoker, and I had to buy wood chips to make smoke. So to me, wouldn’t that be a wash since ya gotta buy some kinda wood for any type of smoker? What I really enjoyed about your review was the detailed cleaning process. That’s going to be very helpful. All in all your review was one of the best reviews on any product I have watched on YT. Thanks!

I have that grill, though without the shelf and bummed they were no longer available. One thing though, the controller is not the best, it lacks a restart capability. I found that out at 4AM one morning when doing a pair of brisket for Thanksgiving dinner. The temp dropped below 150* and triggered my alarm, so went out and unplugged it, and plugged it back in thinking it had stalled out or something. Nope, It started smoking again and I was, OK, then BOOM flames leaped out from the lid and stack! Apparently the wind had blown into the chimney and snuffed the fire out, but the controller just kept feeding pellets. I had to remove everything, run the brisket into the house and in the oven, then clean out the grill and get it restarted, then bring the briskets back out to finish. I solved this issue with a Savannah Stoker controller. Made a good smoker great. Highly recommend replacing the PB controller with the SS. It has a finer temperature control and maintains the temp within 10-20* vs the 30-50* swings the stock controller had. It also reignites if the temp drops below a certain temp. As far as smoking and cooking goes. Love mine! So easy to use and have not had a bad one yet.

also the reason for starting it in smoke mode is to let it build temp up to 180 before you turn it up, gives you a better regulated temp, your temp climbed up so far because you started it so high and the smoker was feeding to many pellets into it trying to get it up to temp, then when it finally reached the temp you set it at there were all those extra pellets it spit in there because it was trying to catch up, so all those extra pellets burn and take your temp way past the setting and it has to come back down, the other way of starting it with smoke regulates your temp so much better

Man, this is a great video. VERY informative. I just bought a Weber Genesis E-310 LP grill that I'm very happy with. However, I'm going to add a pellet smoker to my bbq arsenal as well. I'm torn between a Traeger and a Pit-Boss. I'm leaning strongly toward the P-B, as I've read many complaints about Traeger's temp issues, which is a shame. I notice that P-B has many models available, so I'll have to study them for comparison. Thanks so much for your hard work and the energy you channeled into producing this video to share with us. Gracias, amigo!!

Nice thorough review. The only problems that I was hoping you would mention is when you let it run out of wood pellets. Getting the feeder primed takes a little time but that’s no problem. The issue I have is that I guess letting the auger run out of pellets puts a strain on the auger motor. At a year and a half I am now having to replace the auger motor. I hope everything else is ok. Anyway I love using this smoker for smoking and grilling. Makes the food taste so much better.

Charcoal grill- you have to buy charcoal. Gas grill- you have to buy propane. I think every grill has something you have to purchase on a continual basis to keep them fired up and smoking and grilling- but I do believe the wood pellet industry is by far the most expensive. Thanks for this review. I currently have a Big Green Egg and an old 16-year-old Traeger BBQ smoker and I'm looking at the Tractor Supply 1000 model for under $500. Looks like a deal.

I know Pit Boss says they're cast iron grates but I have to tell you they're just welded mild steel wire grates. Also, if you'd like to avoid blowing up your Pit Boss fire it up with the cooking door open...! (Yes, explosions have occurred.) The term you want is "sear" as in searing your steak or burger...

I have one and been using it for about a year now and I love it, family loves the food I cook on it. The bad It will flame out on you if you go from a high temperature to a lower temperature really fast that's one thing I learned but I think they will all pellet grills will do a flame out so other than that it's excellent grill. High temperature Hits 550 on my grill.

I found when turning down temp it's best to open the lid and let the heat escape. This will insure it stays lit. Shut it when the display reaches the new set temp.

Have the same model of pit boss my auger actually broke don’t really know how... I always have my pellets in there over half way full at the least and my assumption is that when it broke I pulled the auger out and there was very fine parts of pellet in there and the auger packed it all so tight that it snapped the auger so be careful!! I would suggest running it all the way out every now and then
