I know a regular folk don't get the horse button. But in the horse community, it is a very poplar device. Especially with increasingly popular virtual riding lessons. There is a facebook page specifically to problem solve the challenges to pivo following horses. I have had no problems with pivo following my horse so I have never had to ask any questions there. Great review. I never really knew all the stuff that pivo can do. Cool little device.

Hey I really appreciate you taking the time to provide this information. In the video, I sound a little dismissive of the horse feature, because I don't use horses in my workflow (so to speak). But it's really great to hear that the device does indeed provide quality services for those who have horses. I just got my Pivo Silver today. I use it for my horse. What I do is I place my Pivo outside of my horses training fence and I train him. I rewatch after, to see what accomplishments we made. Where we need to work more. Riding- a lot of show riders use the Pivo to see how their riding is for each show. Even how their horse is walking- if he is lame. So many different uses.

I'm so glad to hear that it works well for horse riding. I joked in my video about people not having horses, but I realize a lot of people do and get the Pivo just for that purpose. So it's great to get some feedback on that as I just wasn't able to speak to that in my video. Did it ever lose tracking with your horse? I've heard that if the sun is behind the horse, or the lighting is dim, it stops tracking.

@@AugmentedActor it’s fine. I’m seeing so many people use it for for some really cool uses! It’s been tracking my horse perfectly. I know one down side is he has to wear bright working boots, so the tracking stays on him or it will lose him. Only when the battery gets low. I love the other features! Having fun with it! Oh cool. The tracking feature should work pretty well for puppets as long as they stay on screen and relatively the same size in the frame. If you move them toward the screen or move them out of frame, the object tracking might stop working. For most applications it should work great.

Hi Tony, Sorry for the slow response, I had to break out my pivo and test it. So there doesn't seem to be a setting in either of the pivo apps that allows you to just have it rotate continuously. There is a full rotation setting which will pan left to right or right to left a full 360 degrees, but then it automatically stops shooting after one rotation. You can adjust how fast it rotates and with a remote, you could periodically trigger a rotation video and then stitch them together. The only way I could find to keep it rotating continuously is to hold the remote button down manually and it will turn until you stop. So if you want something to record the entire party, then this probably isn't the solution, but if you want to pick up some rotating shots here and there it can do it. And yes, the pivo is compatible with an ipad and it will turn it just fine. A mini ipad is even better because it's lighter and smaller than a regular ipad, but I hooked up my 10inch ipad and it turned just fine. Just make sure it's not in a location where it can easily get bumped into because on a tripod it might get a little top heavy.

Almost all modes work on landscape. The auto tracking for sure does. Only a few of the special camera effects require portrait mode.

Thank you for this very informative review! I have a question, I see that you are using a wireless mic in your outdoor videos. Is the capability to use a wireless a feature available on Pivo? Or are you using a separate recording device for recording your sound?

It’s a combination of both. When I used the microphone, I usually had it hooked up to my DSLR camera and then synched it up to the audio from my phone when editing. The pivo itself doesn’t have any audio jacks but you can hook a microphone up to your phone as long as it’s a small enough attachment that the pivo can turn it with the phone. You also might have trouble attaching a jack to the bottom of the phone while in vertical orientation as the phone sits in the pivo on the bottom where the jack usually is. So I do recommend recording audio using another device if you’re outdoors. For most of the indoor shots I just used my phone’s built in microphone.

In order for the pivo to control the auto tracking and other effect shots you have to record within the Pivo Play or Pivo+ apps. So it doesn’t work using other film apps like filmic pro. You are able to shoot with filmic pro and use the remote control to turn the camera remotely but not to auto track.

The horse tracking works great and people use it for lesson programs and online lessons with your coach from anywhere in the world. You’ll need a C coach to hear and chat with your coach while riding.

That's a great question. Something I hadn't considered yet. I tried putting the phone in upside down to see if it would work, and you can use the front facing camera, but the back facing camera gets obscured. Also the pivo app controls are upside down. It's not really designed to have anything plugged into the phone in vertical position. It WILL work in landscape. But if you need to shoot in vertical with a mic, then I would recommend using an audio recorder separately and hooking the mic up to that or a second phone to record audio. This obviously wouldn't work for live streaming without a mixer of some sort. There also may be some sort of bluetooth mic option, for instance hooking some airpods up to the phone would work.

It would work for that, although if you are seated and not moving around, then you don't really need the camera to move and could just use a tripod.

I believe you can just put it in regular follow mode and it will track your face if you’re decently lit on stage and you don’t have too many other faces moving about. You could use the remote control to snap photos or you can have it capture video and then save stills from the video. It does have a screw hole on the bottom that fits most any tripod. There’s also modes for taking photos when you strike a pose but in your case there might be all sorts of photos popping off depending on how much or little movement you make on stage. I puked recommend using the remote. The other issue is that a person taking photos can decide what to capture and compose the shot nicely whereas with the Pivo you’ll pretty much take what it gives you. In it there words the photos might turn out blurry or it might not zoom in far enough or it might lose tracking and start following an audience member’s face etc. So I’d still recommend asking a person to take photos while you experiment with placement and modes to see what works best. The pivo is probably going to work better recording video for you and tracking your face or maybe a guitar or other object.

If your face is in the frame in both sitting and standing it will keep you in focus. But it doesn’t tilt up and down. Only pans side to side. But for most self tape auditions you want the camera to remain still anyway. Except maybe for a movement audition.

There may be some sort of device that works with the goPro, but the Pivo does not, mainly because it requires the app on a phone to operate it and track everything from the phone's camera. Since you can't run the app on a goPro, it won't turn. Plus the built in mount is a slot for a phone, so I don't think you could even attach another camera and just use it with the remote.

Thanks for your question. You can use any microphone that will attach to your phone with the Pivo. I prefer a body mic like the rode wireless go or go II. Which is an all in one body mic and transmitter/receiver. As far as I can tell, there's no quality loss on the images or videos. It seems to use the camera's native functions to record through the app. You may notice quality loss when the trick shot effects are applied (fringing around the edges where two sides are stitched together, etc). But the camera still shoots in high quality.

You could mount a camera to the pivo if it’s light enough for the motor to turn. You can unscrew the phone mount which exposes a quarter inch mount screw (like most tripods have). This is how the product 360 tray attaches to it. However, since you’d be using a camera instead of a phone you won’t be able to use the pivo app. You won’t be able to auto track or do any of the special effects I showed in the video. All that has to use a phone with the app installed. You can use the remote control to manually turn the pivo left and right so you could use a small camera and then adjust its pan with the remote but most all other features won’t work.

I haven’t tried it for something like that but my guess is that there would be too many competing targets for it to accurately follow and it would just start moving back and forth. It’s really designed for one person tracking. There is a new body target lock that is supposed to keep tracking a single person but again it’s meant for times when that person is clearly scene the entire time.

Hello do you know if this can track groups such as soccer or football? I know you mentioned that it can track small items but I wonder if it can track groups because I am a fitness coach and we do a lot of movement throughout the day!

It’s not going to work great with groups. There is a new feature where you can target one body and it will try to stay locked on them even in a group but it’s still in beta and a little buggy. But it won’t do well with a large group as there’s too much info for it to lock onto.

Hard to say. I haven't tried it in that environment. The water ripples and other swimmers might cause it to lose tracking and you may have to angle the tripod downward to see the swimmer in the water from above. But I think with a contrasting swim suit (like red or yellow or white), it should track reasonably well and you could always try object tracking and have it track the suit instead of the person. I would still probably recommend a person watch it the first time you try it out to make sure it stays on track.

Thank you. You could repeat the same action with each take of the clone feature and then all of them would be doing roughly the same thing. But I don’t think there’s a way to natively copy the same clip several times in a line. You’d have to move your body and repeat the same action. That’s actually a fun idea.

Thanks for your question. In order to use the functionality of the Pivo, you need to shoot everything using the Pivo Play app. The app does not include a teleprompter feature, although that’s an excellent idea to suggest for future development. I know that you can download for free many teleprompter apps for your phone that will work on a separate device or tablet but they won’t be able to rotate at the same time. If you don’t need to rotate the camera too much in your setup I’d suggest setting up a second device right behind the device on the pivo that has a teleprompter going and hopefully you can see it when the pivo is rotated to the right or left. Even with a teleprompter app you can’t record and use the teleprompter from the same device so you would need a separate teleprompter anyway.

I used a tripod for almost all the shots. The pivo mounts on any standard tripod. It has a screw hole in the bottom which can either screw right to a tripod or to a tripod mount.

To my knowledge there are two ways to handle zooms while using the Pivo. Both using the Pivo Play app. One is to put it on auto zoom, which will slowly zoom in on the face if it is far away and if you move close it will slowly zoom out. If you want to manually control the zoom, you should turn off the auto zoom setting and I believe you can just pinch in or out on the screen to zoom. You'll also see a little zoom slider on the lower right side of the screen.

1. I'd like a video on how to use the back cameras and also in LandScape mode. 2. Yes things have changed a bit since that video. I did an updated video on the new Pivo apps: kzbin.info/www/bejne/a4S0loase7-diNE The features all used to be in one app and now they are split into several, you can get most everything in the Pivo+ and the Pivo Play apps and they should work closely to how I described them in this video. All the other pivo apps are paid apps that give you a few extra features (for example pivo present allows you to share a screen and your camera to present a presentation). I did not review or test those separate apps, but the video linked above will at least tell you what they all do. To use the back camera, you just turn the phone around and it should still auto track you. Most of the special camera modes utilize the front facing camera only, but auto-tracking should work on the back camera. And same for landscape: just turn the phone landscape and you can use it for auto tracking and a few of the camera modes. But most modes are designed for vertical only. Hope this helps.

Do you think it would follow a person doing BMX tricks in a Garage, will it track my body on a bike?

Tough to say. If you don't have a helmet on, it might be able to track your face, but when you turn around or move away too far it might lose tracking. You can have it track an object, like maybe put a red dot on the bike or yourself and it might be able to maintain tracking there. I would say it will work some of the time, but that you may experience some hiccups and I wouldn't rely on it to capture everything.

Yes, without auto tracking, I think you have to use the remote control to rotate it back and forth. Or you might be able to set it to slowly rotate if you want to do a constant rotation.

cool product, but my question is. I'm going to be recording during my bjj classes and with their being a lot of people in the room, will it stay on me?

Good question and it's honestly something I haven't tested out. Are you leading the class? or are you mixed in with a bunch of other people? If you're leading it and facing the group, then it should be able to focus on you. If you are mixed with others or using a mirror, then it might have trouble tracking. What might help is to have light on you or to wear a bright solid color, so it knows to focus on that. You can also have it track an object, like your shirt or a logo or something like that but it may lose tracking if other objects or people enter the frame. You can also limit how far it turns in each direction so if it loses tracking with you for a moment, it won't turn all the way around, but will try to look for you within that angle of direction. None of these are solid answers for your decision to buy, I realize, but my best guess is that it should track you most of the time, but no guarantee.

Was wondering if you can set up the pivo to record 360 normal video as one shot? As if I were to hit record, starts filming and rotating until a full 360 is done and stop recording.

The pivo can and does rotate 360 degrees. If you shoot timelapse or panorama shots it definitely just turns all the way around. If you are auto tracking it will follow you all the way around in a circle (as long as your well lit from all directions. You can also use the remote to turn the camera 360 degrees. But it can’t be used as a substitute for a 360 camera (like for VR). Does that answer your question?

Sorry for the slow response. I had to test it out to see if it could do this. From what I can tell, you can really only achieve this in a couple ways. Use the capture mode with the remote and turn off auto tracking. You can set the speed of the remote to a specific value so it will always turn the same speed, but you have to hold the remote button down to manually turn the camera around 360 degrees (and there's no precision in the degrees turned. In other words, you can't set it to just turn 360 degrees, you have to start and stop the turning manually). The other way is to use the 360 studio turntable mode and instead of using the plate, you mount the camera and it will turn and take a 360 degree turn and record video. However, this mode only allows for square format and it doesn't capture at a full 30 or 60 fps like most videos are shot. So I would say, it's probably not going to be the best solution for your specific ask, but if you aren't too particular about the precision of the rotation, you can achieve several 360 rotation shots that will all be the roughly the same length (you just might need to trim the ends of them to get them to line up) and the same speed, you'll just have to hold the remote or have a second person hold the remote, in order to do it.

If you stay close to the side of the floor where the camera is so that other couples don’t cross your path too much, it may work. Although I haven’t tested it in that sort of scenario, I imagine the tracker would get confused about which body to track and you might be able to have someone draw a tracking box around your outfit or a hat or something and then it might stay with you, but the location would have to have adequate lighting and I really don’t think the pivo is sophisticated enough to stay on target if you were to turn or move around too much. My guess is that you would run into problems and would still want a person operating the camera to make adjustments.

To my knowledge Pivo doesn't yet make a tracking device, but I imagine if you have a contrasting colored object that you could wear on your head or shoulders, it might be good enough to track that in adequate lighting.

Dude, nice work. Clear, to the point, not too long. Good job my friend. Seems like it's a decent product for $140 or so. Considering what things cost today, I think it's worth keeping in my camera bag. One thing I was wondering about: Is there a way to slow the rate at which the camera stops? Thanks I appreciate your comments about the video. I don’t know if there’s a way to slow down the stops themselves but you can adjust the speed at which the tracking moves in general. So perhaps a slower speed overall would seem less sudden when it stops moving. Also be aware that in a few of my shots I sped up the film a little to illustrate the feature and still keep the video moving along so it’s possible that the stops seemed a little more sudden.

I would think a human camera operator would be best for that scenario. With all the different bodies moving about, it would just cause the Pivo to lose its tracking. Plus even if it did track one person effectively it might miss important shots with someone else. However you could set it up and use the manual remote to turn the camera side to side to follow the action, but even that might miss the action.

I would say that it MIGHT work to track the ref. But if anyone crossed in front of him, the PIVO might lose tracking and start to search for the ref again. The Pivo sometimes will start to turn to look for it’s target and it points the wrong direction. You’d still want to have a human monitoring the camera and resetting it if it gets off track. But I still would not recommend it for this purpose. It pretty good at tracking one person’s face but not so great at a group of people or if they turn away from the camera etc.

It won’t make the view on your phone any wider (if you’re looking for a long shot. But if you have a spread of cards and you are moving back and forth in front of them it will follow your face side to side. Or you can have it follow your Dobber for instance. Just note that you can’t til it your phone downward to see the cards on the table. It only moves by rotating your phone left and right. Not up and down. The auto zoom (or remote zoom) can help you zoom in on stuff but again you can’t tilt down or up. So depending on what type of stuff you need to capture just keep that in mind.

It works on android phones made after 2017. If by portrait mode you mean vertical mode then yes. If you mean shooting with the portrait camera for nice depth of field (blur) then I’m not sure. I know on the iPhone it can shoot with either camera but the pivo app does all the photography and video (not your phones native camera app. For instance I can’t shoot using portrait mode while using the pivo app on the iPhone. But I’m not sure how it works on an android. All of the features of Pivo should work as I demonstrated on your phone.

I think I understand what you mean. Portrait mode (to my knowledge (I only have a iphone 7s)) is for photography only. I don't think you can shoot in that blurry background look via video. However different phones might be able to. Here's what I know. In order to shoot with the pivo (and have it track and auto-zoom at the same time), you need to use their app, so some of the features of your phone's video app might not be available on the pivo app. However, you can shoot with your rear facing camera, which has a higher quality lens using the pivo app, you just wouldn't be able to watch yourself on the screen to make sure you are in frame. The auto zoom, just moves in and out and it doesn't zoom super close so the quality is still optical (and not digitally enhanced). So you might not get a super portrait mode style (with the blurry backgrounds), but you will get high quality video, just like you were shooting with your camera anywhere else.
