I thought both movies made it clear that the emotions were never "in control" of Riley. They could input suggestions and what they desire into the console, but it was up to Riley to act on them, just like people in real life can choose to act upon their emotions or not. As a child, in the first movie, Riley was more sensitive to the emotions, but as a teenager in the second movie, she develops a sense of self thanks to the beliefs she developed from her memories, so she relies less on pure emotion. The belief system also being different from the islands of personality: "What do I act like" vs "Who I am". Nostalgia showing up also shows that the emotions were there all along. They just weren't in "headquarters". I assume they had some influence from wherever they were, but in climbing up to headquarters, they have a much bigger influence.

This. It was extremely clear in the scene right before Anxiety throws out the sense of self. Anxiety told Riley to go to the cool kids' team, but her sense of self, which believes to be a good friend, made her ready to ignore the feeling in favour of being loyal to her old friends. Anxiety could make her feel super nervous about this, but she couldn't _make her choose._ Just like we can acknowledge our feelings without letting them control us.
@IdontKnow-ht5ib5 ай бұрын
Exactly! It was originally planned for Inside Out to have over 20 emotions who weren’t in headquarters, and while Joy and Sadness were lost in the memory place(?) they were supposed to come across them. They decided to scrap it though because they didn’t want to make it too complicated.
@Persephone_ch6 ай бұрын
My favorite little thing in the movie is how all of Anxiety’s belief are conditional. “If I get into the FireHawks, THEN I won’t be alone.” Having your sense of self tied to something external like that is exactly how depression starts. I prefer to consider the emotions in inside out as abstract personifications of Riley's feelings and mental states. They're not /actually/ there controlling her, but are instead a way to demonstrate her innermost feelings and thought processes on both a conscious and subconscious level. Arguably would mean that these characters and the events that happen within Riley's mind there do not exist within that universe. Their abstract nature is also why they, and their actions don't always make sense. For instance, in the first one, it's not actually joy suppressing sadness, but rather Riley trying to use that feeling of joy with her past memories to suppress the sadness she's feeling after the big life changes. And then at some point, both of them being thrown out the window, and the movement toward emotional shutdown is pointing to the representation of depression, a profoundly numb state where both joy and sadness hold little meaning.
@AdorApocalypse6 ай бұрын
I feel like this is exactly it, thanks for phrasing it so well! I think this concept can also explain the "well why don't her parents have those emotions in the first movie??" question, especially if we assume that the audience's view of the parents mind's is still sort of through the lens of Riley, she's probably never seen/been able to recognize her parents feeling those complex emotions and as such divided their effects to the core five. I'll admit that's much more of a reach, though 😅

Something I find hilariously ironic is that Anxiety is a completely perfect representation of what Pixar was becoming. Some details i want to point out that may suggest that riley is indeed her own individual and not just a meat suit for the emotions: -in the first film, when anger inserted the running away idea, he mentioned how riley "took it". Meaning Riley herself accepted the idea to run away. She very well could have denied the idea, and I'm pretty sure that means there wouldn't be anything the emotions could do about it. -the emotions talk about Riley as if she is her own person. "Thats out girl", "Riley needs to be happy", ect. -when Anxiety was trying to push Riley to join Val's team, Riley hesitates a while before moving. Anxiety even said something along the lines of "come on Riley move" -the "sense of self" that Anxiety developed wasnt at all what she wanted. If the emotions had full control over Riley then that should not have happened. -The emotions cannot chose when core memories form. It just so happened that until inside out 1, all of the core memories were happy ones. I see the emotions less as little creatures that control Riley's every move, but more like they're influencing her. They're making her feel, rather than controlling her. I think this is especially apparent towards the end of Inside Out 1, where the control panel stopped working outright. Riley didnt stop functioning, she just stopped feeling.
@d1o2c3t4o5r6 ай бұрын
11:52 Inside Out 1 and 2 both conclude with the lesson that emotions cannot dictate everything a person does, but emotions can generally guide the person's behavior. The entire reason why Joy realized that Sadness is necessary, is because Reily's homesickness motivated her to run away, despite the emotions best efforts to stop her (but Sadness helped Reily connect with others, so she stopped).

Disney+ is the biggest problem, and DISNEY SHOULD HAVE KNOWN BETTER! In the 1980s, home video almost sank Disney. Disney dumped their movies onto VHS and people stopped going to the theater. Disney released Pinnochio on VHS and Black Cauldron in theaters the same month, and most parents bought the video tape. Disney put a moratorium on video tape sales - which eventually became the "Disney Vault" - in time for The Little Mermaid and audiences returned to theaters. Limiting home video saved Disney's box office. Disney+ is the exact same situation, it's killing Disney's box office. The irony is, every family that UNsubscribes to Disney+ is a family that will potentially go to the theater to see a Disney or Pixar movie.
@cheetaking2436 ай бұрын
I agree that Disney+ and the post-pandemic slump was the biggest problem, but disagree about the 1980s home video comment. The Black Cauldron was a disaster because: 1.) It cost an unheard-of $44 million to make, nearly 4x the budget of any prior animated feature. 2.) Trying to market a dark PG-rated fantasy (back when PG still actually meant something) made by the studio who had been putting out cute safe children's movies for the past decade like The Rescuers, Winnie the Pooh, Robin Hood, and The Aristocats, was an impossible task. It was too dark for young children, but teenagers wouldn't be caught dead at a Disney movie at the time due to their juvenile reputation from the 1970s. [This is why Don Bluth left the studio. He was tired of them being on autopilot in the 70s.] 3.) The film got very mixed reviews, and was cut/re-edited to death by Jeffrey Katzenberg at the last minute due to believing the film was too intense for families. This left it a bit of a gutted mess, which added to its struggles in finding an audience. Also, 4.) The home video market is arguably what saved Walt Disney Animation. Disney's first few Classics releases were extremely timidly done. But following how well it sold, they rapidly ramped up their "Disney Classics" marketing, focusing much more heavily on Disney's legacy and trying to tie a continuous thread linking Walt Disney's studio of old and the current Disney studio. 'Who Framed Roger Rabbit' brought this nostalgia-baiting to an absolute fever pitch, and is the primary reason why 'Oliver and Company' made so much money despite getting mixed reviews. [Compare the theatrical trailers of 'The Black Cauldron' and 'The Great Mouse Detective' to the trailers for 'Oliver & Company' and 'The Little Mermaid,' and the nostalgia-baiting angle of the later REALLY becomes obvious.] Back then, no matter how good your home theater was, a VHS on a cathode TV was never going to compare with going to theaters. And there was normally a 6-month gap between the theatrical and home video releases of new films. So it was a LONG wait for an inferior product. Disney+ set a precedent of having access to new films, in pristine UHD quality, either immediately upon release or within 2 months of a movie's theatrical release. So it undermined the theater experience MUCH more directly.

What should be taken away from this sequel’s success: animated movies with GOOD STORY and SPECTACULAR ANIMATION perform well with audiences, it doesn’t matter if they’re sequels or original properties. Knowing executives they’ll most likely take away “oh people want more sequels and spin-offs” instead of the idea that people want movies with good execution, visuals, and don’t dumb it down bc it’s “a medium for kids” (bc animation is NOT a medium for kids, it’s for everyone).
@marymurphy14296 ай бұрын
Also that even if it is "for kids" that doesn't mean you should not make quality content. Kids should have shows that speak to them at the level they are at with out treating them like they are dumb. They should not be gotten given just the cheapest bare minimum effort. Kids deserve quality content. They deserve stuff with thought and effort put into it. Disney and Pixar used to do that, but lately they have been putting out less quality content (although there have been some standouts, encanto made me sob) and that is such a shame. Like they are one of the biggest entertainment companies with big IPs but they just keep putting out live action remakes of animated movies that don't hold a candle to the original animation and it makes me sad.

I dont get why so many people hate on anxiety, she means well throughout the whole film and you can get where shes coming from because she just wants to help riley, sure it was bad to kick out all the other emotions but she just wanted to help. The plot of her slowly realising that maybe riley needs some time to think for herself and its too much stress to constantly feel anxious was good. And the panic attack scene, it was all too real and relatable for id say a lot of people, it wasnt just riley who was panicking it was anxiety herself who freaked out so much she didnt know what to do, and it took a lot of help from joy to help her calm down.
@ThRealBuddy6 ай бұрын
Yeah I feel like the people who hate on anxiety miss the point. Yes, CLEARLY as outside viewers we know they're pushing Riley too much, but that's realistic!! If you've ever had a super anxious friend, you can almost instantly tell when they are overthinking. Will they suddenly stop being anxious after you explain to them that their overthinking? Probably not, lol.

I think the reason why some people don’t like anxiety is because when they think of it they instantly think it’s bad, but the thing is this movie shows that anxiety is not a demonic thing in our heads, it’s a part of us and sometimes it helps defines us

One aspect I liked that I haven't seen people talk about is how grounded and realistic the movie is, even with all the fantastical emotion stuff. Like if you take out all the emotion scenes, the movie still makes sense. Riley doesn't act too strange or weird that it feels like the emotions are controlling her like a robot. If you had just the Riley story, you could still follow it: a girl turns 13, goes to camp with her besties and starts having anxiety and almost has a falling out with them.

I feel like the sequel did so well because Inside Out was MEANT to have a sequel. Stress and depression after moving is a wonderful movie idea from the perspective of the mind, and puberty in that environment is a story alone that as a whole can fit into a whole novel. Emotions are always changing, maturing. Learning. There's always new emotions, new experiences, new changed, and those are prime opportunity for the Inside Out universe to continue. It seemed less like a sequel and more like a continuation, which is what a sequel SHOULD be, not just a way for some spare bucks. They genuinely enjoyed making this movie, I could tell. One element from the original movie that I think they expanded upon really well, is the way they balance the silly moments with the more serious ones. E.g., I was really expecting to cringe when they introduced Bloofy, but they presented him in a way that I found genuinely funny and fit with the context of the story. And then there's that line from Joy during her break down: "Maybe that's just something that happens when you get older. You feel less joy." Like, damn. You just plunged a cold knife into my heart and twisted the blade.

Inside Out 2 didn't reach the emotional heights of Inside Out IMHO, but the themes were still pertinent and poignant, the humor was honestly funnier, and I loved how we got to see the emotions play off one each other and have their funny one-liners and unique moments to shine. Anger and Fear had some of the best lines! If I had two critiques, they would be that Envy wasn't really a representation of true envy, and more just the embodiment of social comparison, and that we should've seen some kind of negative consequence from how Riley's self-concept was initially constructed in order to more fully justify her developing a more nuanced and multi-faceted self-concept. Because a lot of her self-concept seemed to be rooted in memories of her *performing* well, I would've drawn a more explicit connection between Anxiety frantic need to succeed being rooted in Riley's belief that she had to succeed everywhere in life in order to be worthy and "good."

I feel like ryley is her own being, cause when anxiety was trying to get her to steal the notebook she said “she doesnt want to?” Insinuating that ryley didnt want to steal the notebook even when the emotions did, (thats what it said atleast in the german dub) The only reason she still did was because anxiety forced her too,which an emotion isn’t supposed to do if their human doesnt want to

Are we not gonna talk about how the guy in that stock footage you used at 6:24 forgot to peel the last bit off the banana before biting it?

The scene of Riley's anxiety attack really hit me. As a very anxious child (and adult) I can't imagine how much I would have benefited from seeing a representation like that. Something to show me that how I was feeling was valid, that it wasn't bad or wrong to feel that way, and that there was a way through it. I took me a long time to figure out the right words to describe how I was feeling, and I'm really grateful that my daughter gets to grow up with films and shows that explore these things in productive and honest ways.
