Could I also add too that most likely Ming’s(Mei’s mother) family mostly likely came to the western world during the time that was discriminatory to minority races and immigrants. Though I don’t know Canada’s exact history with Asian immigrants or other minorities. I feel like commonly, most immigrant children felt the immense pressure to fit into the western world as a citizen and also honor their parents who made the difficult and sometimes treacherous journey to find safety and financial stability in a whole new country. While Ming and Mei had similar issues and dealt with it differently, I like how they subtly showed how Ming had less of a rejection of her mother’s wishes because of the guilt of hurting her and also because of how their family were still building their roots in Canada. Mei is probably their first generation Chinese-Canadian born citizen, if mot second generation, and her maternal family has already established themselves as Chinese Canadians. Also Ming didn’t seem like she had a good support system of friends like Mei did with Priya, Miriam, and Abby. That probably added to why her panda was so large in size in the movie.
@Kittsuera
@Kittsuera 2 жыл бұрын
I think its so big because she had tried so hard to be perfect that her panda phase specifically didn't happen until much later, like around the time she was old enough to say she wanted to Marry Mei's Dad. It was stated thats when she lost control. it was also deeply rooted in anger and disapproval/ rejection of her love choice. the initiating emotion may have influenced what her Base Panda ended up being. speculation though, given how Mei is able to do partial transformations while keeping proportionate expressions of those parts. (ears tail hands etc) i think there is a plausible way to intentionally become much bigger or smaller. just not a strait forward sort of thing nor is it the default. could be needing to magnify the emotion and compound it without transforming to the point of bursting before releasing it all at once. so yeah, "holding a lot in" does work

Tiger mothers are terrifying. The scene where Mei turns towards her mom and doesn't defend her friends, as an adult I got mad at her for doing that, but in reality...I did the same. I turned away, because my fear of my mother's disapproval was so high to the point where there was a point where my mom told me that I would not be her daughter if I had certain people as friends, I feared being disowned before I even knew the word "disown". Mei not hanging out with her besties after school because of 'work" 100% experienced that too. Its hard. It makes you question if you have friends at all and your friends also question why the hell you never go to their sleep overs or bbqs or birthday parties. Different culture different traditions. And the fact that Ming doesn't like Miriam, spoke so loud to me even though it was a very small side comment in the whole movie. Will admit I 100% spent most of my middle school years lying just like Mei had started, because gotta hide that side of you from your parent. AHA I even got a blank VHS, from a friend so I could record latenight cartoons in secret. The way Mei learned to embrace her identity as a tween, her anxiety, her body, but also her asian-ness but also her Canadian-Chinese identity is great. Mom is so big because of the years of suppressed anxiety and emotion. Chinese moms are very good at being "perfect mom" and never showing emotion other than control.
@FunFilmFare
@FunFilmFare 2 жыл бұрын
And being Asian I think this movie even subverts the Tiger Mom trope! Every time Mei displeases her mom she gets mad at everyone EXCEPT Mei. And for the most part Mei obeys her out of genuine love rather than fear. Granted there’s definitely some love bombing going on, which is also common for Asian families

"You should never write or draw things down." Respectfully, I disagree. It's a very healthy form of expression and can be very therapeutic. I always encourage my patients to keep a journal. What shouldn't have happened is that her mom shouldn't have invaded her privacy.

You’re right! We should of focused more on that instead of thinking in a ‘trust no one’ mindset
@HanQ28
@HanQ28 2 жыл бұрын
I think you "should never" write or draw things down when you have "no boundary" parents like Mei's mum. It just means that, pragmatically speaking, that's the safer way to avoid disastrous and traumatic experiences like what Mei ends up going through. Of course it's better when our parents just don't invade our privacy, but you've got to deal with what you can't change. Children can't pick and choose their parents, so they often need to compromise and do the smart thing in order to "survive" in a toxic environment like that.
@boltybolt1697
@boltybolt1697 2 жыл бұрын
If you're a doctor or therapist, you should know that a lot of people don't have privacy in their own homes. Even though it should be the norm, it's naive to believe that extremely nosy parents would accept not snooping in their kid's things. It's easier to not draw or write anything that might embarrass you later on. This happens a lot in abusive environments, it's a way to cope for children
@kateiannacone2698
@kateiannacone2698 2 жыл бұрын
@@boltybolt1697 I have no illusions that everyone has privacy. But saying that Mei shouldn't draw or write things down puts the responsibility for her humiliation on herself, whereas saying Ming shouldn't invade her privacy puts it on Ming where it belongs.

I have to admit that I really enjoyed the movie. It was weird and really out there, and that's what I liked about it. I really enjoy when animated projects that don't shy away from family problems, teenage drama or social issues. The characters, animation and voice acting were all done very well. They did a good job of showing how scary changing and growing up can be, but it happens for a reason. But like any other Disney movie, the problem is mostly resolved to quickly. Forgiving and moving on is important, but its not easy (like they make it seem in their movies). Ming did the exact same thing to Mei that her mother did to her - and she didn't see that? If nothing is ever going to be good enough, you shouldn't push a child to be perfect. Healing can happen...but it takes time. (Ming shouldn't need to apologize. She may have given her mother that scar, but it was Wu's controlling and overbearing nature that caused such an act.) People may call the portrayal of Chinese culture in this movie racist or stereotypical; but it isn't if its all fact. Most families of Asian cultures are very controlling and pass that toxic quirk to their children. Parents shouldn't push their desires onto their children, because than the children never get to live their own lives. If your kids rebel, its most likely because you're refusing to listen to them. If there's a sequel, I seriously hope that Disney doesn't tone down the problems and issues of growing up.
@yohy6

We totally agree!! With Disney & Pixar movie the resolution is pretty quick even though many of us that might be going through those same issues know it's not that easy but I guess the movie might be a little kick to stop that happening for other people. We come from a Hispanic household so we can kind of understand how Mei Mei feels at times, you want to do what you want but can't push out what your parents want. Since our parents migrated to America without knowing the language, culture, or anything it feels like our problems may seem small and feel like you aren't able to complain or not do what your parents say because of all they worked for. This movie and Encanto are both good movies that a lot of minorities can relate with wanting to make your parents proud but also feeling fearful to complain because you know how hard you're parents worked. We do hope the resolution doesn't just take one conversation next time. 💛💛

And this movie even subverted most depictions of Asian families. I expected something like Joy Luck Club or Shang Chi where everyone hates their parents. Glad Turning Red averts this trope!! By having Mei obey her mom out of genuine love/guilt rather than fear.

On that note I think Encanto has a way better ending!! The final number clearly shows that at several weeks or months passed during the time the Madrigals were changing things. Meanwhile in Turning Red everything was resolved in a few days.

In regards to resolutions, I think we’re forgetting that these films are made for children. They’ve got 1.5 hours to work with before most kids lose their focus. To the rest of us, we know that irl these things aren’t resolved over night.

About Ton Yi messing up the family line comment because of her interest. Actually it’s not. In China’s history, whenever there were wars, all of the men in the villages must go fight on the battlefield. This created alot of opportunities for bandits to go and robbed the defenseless villages, there were often times where they would r*p*d and murdered women, some even would murdered their children as well. So there would actually be stories, myths, legends about having a hero to save the poor villagers. Just some history context for you guys. Hope this help 👍

A lot of people see movies like this and think that the parent should’ve realized they didn’t want their kid to feel how they did but it’s not that simple. Because when you don’t know what to do what was done to you is usually the only thing you know.
@madsahren2208

I wish things could be better resolved in disney/pixar movies- but I do like that they keep it simple for kids to understand, and get the message across with out getting too heavy! And of course its nothing like the real world, but it is a fun cartoon fantasy movie so they can have more fun with it! And the main point was for Mei to find herself and learn that her mom will love her even if she does things her own way, and I think that came across well. Mei really found herself and helped her mom out along the way too!

One thing I think you missed about the show down between Mom vs Friends is that Mei is Asian, and with a tiger mom like that she has to actually worry about belonging to a culture that would 100% disown a 13 year old girl for going against her parents. Just one disagreement or fight can end up creating a chasm that lasts all or most of your life. I've seen families where a guys parents have refused to do more than bare minimum since he refused to leave the high school he loved for a "better" school. He's now 30 and his parents kicked him out at 18 and changed their literal numbers. It's sad but that literally how bad some of these families get and being raised in a house where mom's word was law I totally get Mei's actions heck I wasn't allowed to speak to certain people lest my mother disown me. She put me out multiple times before I was even 10 and that created severe abandonment issues. I'm not saying Mei's mom is that toxic but she's obviously a tiger mom which is a few steps down from my own but still just as scary. P.S. when I mention cultures disowning or abandoning children because of "little" rebellions I don't mean to say this is only in asian culture and that all asians do this because no they don't And I'm stating this now before people create an argument from misinterpretations. I come from a minority family (not asian) I just have a lot of asian friends and found that home life is pretty similar between us. But their are plenty of families that are toxic once you look at their punishment methods. Heck my mom's messed me up so much that at 25 I still cry at the thought of upsetting her and I hate that I feel like I lost my whole childhood to catering to her whims.
@yohy6
@yohy6 2 жыл бұрын
No we totally get what you mean. We can’t say much about Asian families, but we do agree that there’s many families who are okay with disowning there kids believing that they are teaching them a lesson and that there kids will come back and say sorry. Being from a Hispanic family we understand that we could be disown from our culture/ family if you don’t follow what is said. For us, it’s not as severe but now that we have gotten older we understand that certain things that our parents have done was just their way of loving since they weren’t given that as children. It doesn’t excuse the damage that they made but I understand that they are still hurting especially since Hispanic families don’t talk about there emotions and are always told to hold it in or that crying is weak.

7:50 Forget being a teenager, even as an adult in the workplace we don't hand each other pads/tampons in full view. Maybe we're more lax if it's an all female shift, but there's basically an unspoken rule that period issues are kept to whispers and secret agent hand offs.

Wanna know something interesting and telling of why Ming is the most enormous of the pandas? So she attacked her mom in retaliation for wanting a husband her traditional mom didn't approve of. If you so much as divorce in East Asia, you are disgusting and not worthy of being known. So Ming snapped, cut her mom's eyebrow by accident, and almost decimated the temple. That was before the stress of raising a child or Mei. With Mei, Ming is a new mother, never had more kids, so she doesn't know what she is doing and is too scared to ask her family. With that, Westernization is interesting and is heavily referenced later as the females accept that times are evolving whether they approve or not aka why Ming has her panda as a pet in the Tamagotchi and why the grandmother had the 4 medallion despite translation meaning death. Ming is massive because she's been an outcast to where her family talk down about her to her face, and I know this because my Oba was in that situation after hiding in the tunnels of Okinawa in 1945 and then migrated only to lose her kids and husband for over four decades, having to buy a house herself and learn English with three forced children in a psych ward after she just arrived. There is so much to unpack here, but that's how it is.

I don't think the size of the mom's panda was anything about her 'holding it in', but just that she had 'THAT' particular panda spirit that just happened to be a kaiju? I don't know.

That doesn’t make any sense considering there’s no panda spirits that’s going into them, it’s their panda based on themselves and their emotions

@@BabyGirlTiny Well honestly the dream itself is pretty ambiguous. What with the eldritch horror that is mermaid Devon gasping for air, the flower 4Star cast, an army of red pandas coming over the shrine walls, the two panda's over Sun Yee's shoulder coming out of the poster and, say, into her? On top of that, when they do the ritual, and each family member passes through the mirror, each panda spirit returns to the bamboo forest, which sells the idea for me.
