Same, for me (I’m probably biased, I’m adopted) it made me happy that whether or not Riley is adopted, she’s still a girl with parents going through the same things a biological family has. I don’t think it should make us like Riley or Inside Out less knowing she’s adopted. If this was true however, it would be nice to have it mentioned to let people know who didn’t watch this video or had the theory themselves.

I’m adopted and totally agree that it doesn’t matter. Being adopted doesn’t define a person or their family love 💕 I totally believe and love this theory!!! However, Pixar should have briefly brought this up to help change society views on adoption and “different” types of families. It’s usually portrayed as a negative and an all impactful part of an adoptee’s life in the media, which isn’t true most of the time, especially like how young Riley was.

"The audience would define Riley by her adoptedness [ being adopted] and that is not who she is, and that is not fair to Riley, it is not fair to define someone by just a part of someone" -Jonathan Carlin By far one of the best messages ever! People really need to appreciate this video and the knowledge it shares!

erm... family trees can sometimes be 'upside down'. riley is at the top because she's the newest addition - with the two below her being her parents. (keep in mind that this is how actual plants grow - the new stuff comes at the top)

One thing glaring issue with this is the blond hair. It's extremely common for kids to be born with blonde hair when their parents are brown haired. the kids simply don't STAY blonde. As they get older, their hair gets darker until it matches the parent's hair.
@mysteriousvideogamer
@mysteriousvideogamer 8 жыл бұрын
+Dori C that is true, but I think Riley's hair would've started to darken by now. Going by my own experience, I was a red head when I was born, and when I was 7 or 8 when my hair began to change. Don't know exactly when it was fully brown, but I think it was around when I was 12. Now, this could've just been me but if Riley's hair really was going to change, I think it would've started by now or at the very least be a bit darker from the hair in her other memories.

More evidence: When Riley is in bed for the first time in San Francisco, her mom says "What did we do to deserve you." This could just be her mom being nice, or it could be her mom referring to the fact that she was adopted. Loved the video.

It also explains why her mom had sadness be the center emotion in her council. Women who can't have babies do tend to be sad about it, even if they have an adopted daughter. (You can be sad and happy at the same time, as is shown by the movie itself.) Adoption is one of the most loving things a human being can do. Thank God for parents! BTW, your statistics aren't quite right. Hair color and eye color have some linkage. P.S. I doubt that the creators of the movie designed the hair color and eye colors randomly. It is much more likely that they intentionally did it to indicate that she was adopted.

Re: hair/eye color: In real people unlikely things happen all the time, but in animations, animators have to make a conscious decision every time they design a character - they're much more likely to create those contextual connections in characters. If the hair color / eye color doesn't match, there's probably a reason. That's probably the most compelling evidence. The Family Tree? I agree with what someone said below - it's entirely possible that it's just upside down. To me, it makes more sense that a 12 year-old's concept of her family would put herself at the top than it would be that she'd be imaging her great-great grandchildren.

I disagree for the reason that it's way super healthier to TELL a child that they're adopted from a young age rather than keep it a secret, so that it's normalized and there's no weird feelings about it. but also: adoptive parents are real parents, and even finding out she was adopted, I feel like she could just be like "oh, well, you two ARE my parents, after all" but then I guess the question she would grapple with would still be "why didn't my parents just tell me I was adopted?"

"How did two brown haired, brown eyed people give birth to a blonde haired, blue eyed daughter?" Same way my parents did. I was at my younger sister's birth and she has both blue eyes and blonde hair, but my parents have brown eyes and brown hair like myself. The reason for this is they both carry recessive genes that aren't affecting them, but they had the chance to be dominant in my sister, which they were. Same thing is likely with Riley

I think it is weird that Riley went to the same daycare from toy story 3. You can see it in one of her memories. Also her full name is Riley Andersen. and the little girl from Toy story 3 is named Bonnie Anderson. They both take place in modern times since Bonnie has a mac and riley's dad has a modern phone. Is there any possibility that Bonnie grew up and adopted Riley? if so, does that mean that inside out takes place in the SLIGHT future?

Couple things. a) As people age their hair colours can change and particularly darken so Reilly could still have the same hair as her parents. b) Family Trees are just that TREES, the parents are usually on a different level from the children, the tree is based on generation and they belong to a different generation. c) That is not necessarily the moment that Reilly is born, as you said things are messy when kids are born. That could be later after she has been cleaned up and returned to her parents. Honestly this one was seriously reaching.

My mom had blond hair as a kid and teen but over time it darkened and now is brown. Same is happening to me, I had really blond hair when I was little, now it is dark blond as a teen. So eventually it might darken to brown like hers. Also, my eyes used to be blue and now they are green. Eyes change color too. That is a good point. But I don't think it is a reach.

I thought Riley was adopted from the first time I saw the movie. The first memory and the hair/eyes coloring were the main things that put that thought in my mind but what makes me really believe in this theory is that feeling of responsibility for the happiness of her parents that Riley has. She doesn't want to disappoint them, like she is there to make them happy. I know most of first child have this sense of responsibility, but I believe that adopted kids my feel it even more... Maybe I wrong, but that's how it felt for me.

I always thought that Riley was adopted! Took me a long time to find this video, hahaha. I think it is important that it was included, but NOT mentioned. The more we normalize different families and not make a big deal about them, the easier it is for people in those situations to feel like their experience is along a spectrum of other regular family dynamics.

It's not THAT difficult to have a different color of eyes than your parents. Both my parents and my sister have dark brown eyes, whereas my eyes are hazel and appear green. My friend has blue eyes, but her parents' eyes are also brown. I know plenty of other people like this, too. It's really not all that "rare" for that to happen. And for the "but her hair is blonde, that's so unlikely!!!" follow-up, _peoples' hair gets darker as they get older_. I used to have platinum blonde hair up until I was 8 or 9, and then my hair started to get darker and darker. Now it's a reddish medium brown (very similar to Riley's mom's hair, actually). So no, I don't believe Riley is adopted, if only because the "GENETICS!!1!" argument is so weak and annoying and I hear it so often.

+Len the Trendy Tetraodontiforme Also, that family tree does not feature Riley as a "starting point" with all the people below her being her offspring. It seems very, very clear that the two portraits just below her own are her _parents_. So it's like a flipped family tree, that starts from the bottom and moves up as opposed to the other way around. Which, honestly, makes more sense, since wouldn't your ancestors be the "roots" of your existence? And as a last point, most babies don't open their eyes IMMEDIATELY after being born. It takes a few days to a few weeks. And a lot of parents don't get to meet their baby right away. My parents didn't get to meet me for 24 hours because of some emergency during the birth. So yeah.

+Len the Trendy Tetraodontiforme 24 hours still isn't enough time for the mom to be out of the hospital bed already and standing. Even days after the child is born, wheelchairs are given to the mother because they might not be physically ready yet. It would be more believable if the memory in Rileys head was her mom still laying in the hospital bed while holding her.

Okay, wait. I have blonde hair and green eyes. Both of my parents have brown hair (my dads is almost black). My mom has blue eyes, and my dad has dark brown eyes. And here I am. This is what the video leaves out: grandparents. I get my light haircolor from my grandma on my dads side and green eyes from my grandma on my moms side. Now, I get it, he used a punnet square to show recessive genes in that of the parents from their ancestors, and from there it shows that it's entirely possible. When you look at children from families, you'll find that a lot of the children don't look like their parents, and that doesn't mean they're adopted. It just means they got all of their looks from their grandparents which is more common then you think. This idea is not only unexplored in this video but also seemingly forgotten to prove a point. I get it, Riley could be adopted, but we don't know what he'd grandparents looked like, and at entirely possible that her bright hair and eyes came from them, as they did for me.

In school, genetics was one of my favorite topics because my genes are very improbable. Both my parents have dark brown hair- I have blond hair. (My Mom said it may darken as I get older, however it never did. I am as blonde now (21) as I was when I was born) my dad and his parents all have brown eyes. My mom’s parents and brother all have brown eyes but she has green eyes and I have blue. Both my parents cross their left thumb over their right when clasping their hands (another dominant gene) but once again, I get the recessive if crossing my right thumb over my left. We’re a Caucasian family, however my parents have much darker skin color and I’m pale as a ghost. [also- in reference to the video, he was wondering why Riley is the only child if the parents seem like big family people. He figured it was due to the lengthy adoption process. I am an only child because my parents couldn’t have any more kids. They never learned why, they’ve tried and tried. They didn’t adopt because of the lengthy process and the money involve behind it. I had millions of imaginary friends and to this day still really wish I had a little sister. All in all a point I’m getting at is- I may be leaning more toward the fact that Riley is NOT adopted at all. BUT the fact that she is so genetically improbable IS one of the characteristic that makes her unique, sets her apart and is her “special” [there is a key writing terminology word I’m missing here] calling card for why she is different and worthy of a story. After all if she was “special” in some sense, we sorta wouldn’t care about her. She’s just be normal. Another example of this “special” characteristic is Nemo’s little “lucky” fin from Finding Nemo. Already this little fin sets Nemo apart from being normal and is one reason why you kinda want to know what happens to him. One more example comes from Brave in that Merida’s hair is ginger which is a very uncommon gene that pops up every now and then despite the parents’ hair color. She is different- let the story begin!

You can make a family tree the other way around, so the first ancestors are on the trunk and then it goes up, what makes more sense when you imagine it as a tree. If this was an imagined family tree of Riley and the family she is going to have, then why is beside her no one else with whom she would have the children? So I think, that's no evidence.

+Renée Colquette your kids are supposed to be under you in a family tree and the grandparents are supposed to be on the top. as in when youre tracing your geneology, you start with yourself at the base of the tree and the tree gets bigger toward the top as you add your parents, their siblings, their parents, etc.

1. Did it ever occur that Riley's mum could be naturally blond, gone brown? I went from white hair as a child, to dark blond as an adult. 2. I know many.....many people who are only children. 3. How does them being good parents make Riley adopted? you imply that they must have adopted or had children of their own before, derp. 4. The family tree could be backwards, the 2 under Riley being her parents. I doubt she'd miss them off her "dream family tree" to much love between them....and there is no dream husband beside her..... Either or, I reject your theory and substitute my own. They are her parents.

+Omar Beltran I wouldn't say its unlikely, I know a few people, some related others not who have gone from blonde to brown. myself included. hmm, I still can't see how an imaginary friend makes a difference. weather the child was adopted or not parenting would more than likely follow the same path since we can assume they got Riley at birth. *sudden realisation* The first thing Riley and joy see are her parents, and thus the first memory......could be safe to say that they are her real parents as the birthing mother is always the first to hold the child. however Riley does have a hat, assuming she has come from one of those baby rooms, which could explain why Riley's mum isn't all messy and isn't in a hospital gown.

That still doesn't explain the blue eyes, and it would be pretty weird that she got both the blue eyes and blonde hair anyways Watch their latest video to know what I'm talking about And since we are assuming, we could theorize that her adoption was something like the one depicted in Juno, and maybe her actual Mother died at childbirth

1. Perhaps Riley did not form memories right after birth, and this is after she recovered from the shock of being forcefully evicted from the womb? 2. The genetics are NOT implausible. 6.25% means roughly 6% of children of both-Bb parents are both-bbs themselves. 3. Maybe, like many Scandinavian families, they don't want a lot of kids? 4. Or maybe it's a reverse tree? 5. As many people here pointed out, and originally it slipped my mind, there are many dark-haired individuals who were blondes at an early age. It might darken to her parent's brown hair in the future. I don't think there's evidence to either way, and it doesn't matter.

I've seen it in action, numerous times, and lo and behold, blonde, blue-eyed kids all over the world are naturally concieved of two brown haired and eyed people all the time. He's laying thick on it. 6.25% is not a lot in a town of 100, but in a world of 7 billion, or even a state of a few millions, where there's at least a single million of Bb couples, do the math.

It's also not uncommon for people's hair to get darker after childhood, so her mom could have been blonde at that age too. That's how my family is. If you factor that in and count one or both of her parents as being ex-blonde, it's not so improbable for them to have a blonde child :P

There’s also the possibility that Riley’s mom had trouble getting pregnant so they hired a surrogate Which might explain why they only had one kid Since egg retrieval and IVF are expensive in it of itself let alone hiring a surrogate plus the added expenses of pregnancy and actually raising a kid Besides she does kind of look like her parents if you picture her with brown hair and eyes or them with blonde hair and blue eyes Or Riley’s mom did give birth to her as it also looks like she’s sitting, wearing a pink hospital gown rather than a white one And Riley came out unconscious and not breathing, and had to be revived Hence why she only develops emotions and her mind after she’s all cleaned and swaddled up

First off, having had a baby I was up and walking in 30 minutes. Not uncommon. Also the pink outfit could have been the gown that a birth center used because birth centers usually have much nicer outfits, usually pink, for mum to wear. Secondly, if she gave birth in a birth center she would have given birth in a much more calming environment with less stress than a hospital meaning she would have recovered faster. Also childbirth gives you a HUGE rush of adrenaline . And what do you expect a woman in childbirth to look like? Also if Riley had a low apgar score at birth the doctors / midwives would have been working on her while the mother delivered the afterbirth and why she first opens her eyes and sees mom and dad. Also many babies take hours to open their eyes!!!!

And about the genetics..... Many ethnicities have a higher rate of producing a blond hair blue eyes child, like say Scandinavian and Northern European . And we don't know the parents genetic makeup! Also if one parent has a recessive gene expressed for brown hair and brown eyes they would pass on the gene for blue eyes blond hair making blond and blue 50/50 at least! Plus other factors influence genetics . Including how many children the mother had. I spent 3 years studying genetics trying to understand my own adoption and genetic make up. I'm brown ethnic hair brown green eyes and tan skin with freckles. I come from a family on one side who is black and some of my aunties have blond and red hair and light skin and Afrocentric features. I mean dude. It's so much more complicated than a 7th grade understanding can comprehend. Drops mike

interteresting but..... 1) both blue eyes and blonde hair are both genetic mutations so the chances are more complicated than that 2) babies take some time to open there eyes fully its possible they took her cleaned her up and brought her back to her mom who might be wearing a hospital gone and wanted to walk around 3)the two pictures at the bottom of her could represent her parents and inverted family leading up to the creation of her( its a thing people do) 4) sometimes people have a kid and no matter how hard they try the cant have another, this happened in my family my mom is a -negative blood type dad is a positive blood type and im a positive blood type. the negative kinda rejects the positive making extremely hard to carry the child.

PurpleDiamond It doesn't matter for the chances of new generation getting either variant which one was original and which one was the mutation. The odds ARE more complicated, but it has nothing to do with mutations. It has to do with the fact that high school genetics keeps thing simple and easy to digest. In reality there are very few traits that are 'simple traits'. A simple trait is one which is governed by a single gene for which there are only two alleles. Eye colour has at least 15 genes, some of which are located near each other on the same chromosome and therefore have a high interdependence. It's messy...

When J said those words about being adopted DOES NOT matter because they ARE her real parents. It makes me emotional because the culture and family I grew up in looks down on adopted kids. Whenever someone we know is adopted comes up in a conversation, my Mom or Dad (especially my Mom) was quick to point out/refer to them as "the adopted one", as if they're lowkey disgusted with that idea. And here I am, nearing 30 planning to adopt my own kids in the future makes me sad of being related to people like that. Disgusting.

Her bio parent/s couldn’t take care of her the way she needed so gave her to a couple who wanted a little one but couldn’t have one of their own. Now she is safe and loved as if she was their own flesh and blood. You don’t have to share blood to be family. I hope to be able to be a family to a child who was given up on, just like I was.

Friend's theory is that Andy had a little too much fun in college and could be Riley's biological father. The mom was an unknown girlfriend. Couple of college kids not ready for a kid believably gave kid up for adoption. Friend also pointed out that Imagination Land is a pretty big deal for Riley, and who else had a very huge imagination? Actually that family tree thing was out of context, and you’re looking at it wrong. See you see her at the top and two other portraits below her and more below them. What your seeing is how family trees were drawn like till maybe 100 years ago. Her parents are below her then her grandparents and so on, they form the ‘trunk’ or ‘branch’ and Riley would be a ‘leaf’ or a ‘branch’.
