It really bothers me when tech reviewers call a phone slow. They’re usually comparing it to other brand new phones while their viewers are looking for a comparison to their current device (which is probably at least a year old). Something I think is always missing is a comparison to older phones so people can understand if the performance would feel fast from their perspective, and not that of a tech reviewer who lives on the cutting edge.

Here it is late December and I am still using the Pixel 3a. 7 months later and it is still a great phone. This is the only Android I have used this long that hasn't lagged or slowed down. Still a great multi tasking phone and of course the camera. This is mid range done right. Waiting on the 4a now.

The picture of the mug is a live picture, same as on iPhone. It’s not a bug, it doesn’t tell you that’s what its doing though so its does seem weird first time you see it. When you tap on the live picture you’ll see a pause button in the top right, which makes it a standard photo

I have a base 3a. On the whole it's been an absolute dream to use. One exception is privacy. You have to be willing to sink in some time combing through the settings to turn off or uninstall all of the pre-installed Google spyware / bloatware / invasive features. The software is still good, but it's far less light and clean than it used to be on the Nexus line. My other problem is that my display is actually defective, so I'm going to have to ship it back for a replacement. I haven't heard any reviewers or tech press talk about this, though, so I think I just had bad luck. Those two bits aside, I'm beyond impressed. The camera is outstanding and my battery life has been downright silly. I've averaged around 10 hours SOT per charge over my first week and a half of use. Granted, I killed a lot of Google stuff, threw on some true-black themes, didn't install battery hogs like Facebook, etc. but still! The SD 670 may be slightly slower, but it's still 10 nm and has 6 efficiency cores compared to the 4 in the SD 845 on the flagship Pixel 3. That appears to be seriously boosting battery life. The size and build quality (defective display aside) both feel good too. All of the folks complaining about the bezels are overstating things. The Pixel 3a has a 75% screen to body ratio and the XR is 79%. That's a very small difference, and you can actually use the whole display effectively on the 3a because there's no notch. The headphone jack is so great to have back, the fingerprint reader is very fast and accurate, and the stereo speakers are solid (although I do wish both fired forward).

I find it funny that every review for this phone compares it to flag ship phones that cost more than twice it's cost. IMHO this phone wins when compared to any other mid range 300 to 500 dollar phone. The hardware specs do not really matter for everyday use for the average user.

Not sure but honestly it's actually making the "flagships" look bad. Someone compared the aXL to the iPhone X and Samsung S10+ and it was basically on par with more items than you would expect and even faster in some areas and the camera hands down. So basically they literally convinced me NOT to get the iPhone or Samsung.

The camera is exactly why I buy Pixel phones. Also the stripped down OS is nice as well. This is a great phone to test Beta in as well.

You can use Smart Lock for face unlock on the pixel, something Android has had long before iOS ever dreamed it up. While face unlock may not be as secure as Face ID it works pretty well and in my opinion is more than secure enough for the average user.

I would say yes to the switch. It's an easy switch it's only $400 if you can't stand it I'm sure you can sell it in 3 months for $250-$300 and not lose your ass like you do with any other Android phone out there. I'm not planning on selling mine as I did come from an iPhone and I'm super happy with this phone over the iPhone in every way. I dropped this phone 3 time and still not a scratch on it. Love it and I'm sure the people that pick it up will too.

I don't know that I buy your longevity argument. Google has said that the 3a will get three years of software updates, so to me it seems that Google would have to take these phones into consideration when developing not only Android Q, but versions R, S, and T...much in the same way Apple has been known to make sure IOS continues to work on their older phones. Lastly, i'll just say that most young people I know with an older iPhone live with not only cracked front screens, but also cracked back glass. I think the 3a makes more sense if you're notoriously hard on your phone as you only would have to replace the front glass, and I'd bet a screen repair on a 3a would be much much less expensive than a screen repair on an iPhone. I'm seriously on the fence about the 3a, mainly because I can get so much more phone in a OnePlus 7 Pro for $250 more. I'm leaning OnePlus because I like what they've done with OxygenOS. Just my $.02

I agree though about the concerns re: longevity - yes this will have 3 years of software updates (most Androids only have 2) but the Pixel phones have had a patchy history so far with unstable/buggy software. Still, I think for this price point if you get 2 years out of it it would be more than worth it.

The privacy concerns about the Google assistant compared to Siri are now irrelevant due to the recent reports from employees on Siri recording private and sensitive information and having people at Apple personally listen to them to "improve the voice recognition" when Apple said that whatever happens on your iPhone stays on your iPhone, they put themselves in a corner and showed some hypocrisy

Regarding longevity, if you're worried about the Pixel 3a/3aXL slowing down, I wouldn't worry too much about that. First, I've never heard of any Pixel phone slowing down over time. This just doesn't happen unless there is a hardware issue. Software wise, this just doesn't happen. Secondly, I'm currently beta testing Android Q (just got Beta 6 yesterday) and can assure you that Google is optimizing the OS to run much smoother than Android Pie. If anything, I'd say Android Q will probably make the Pixel 3a/3aXL run faster and smoother. And third, for the price, you can't really complain about the performance at all. It's smooth, fast, and stable, what more could you want? Also, I almost wish all phone manufacturers would return to poly-carbonate cases because glass is glass and glass WILL break!

Turn off Motion in your pictures. Simple fix for the jumping photos and the slow processing. Motion takes up processing power too. Simple toggle and you fixed both problems in the camera.

The camera has been fixed. It still does a bit processing, maybe 3 seconds, but nowhere to see any lag going on. I don't mind it actually. First you see a picture you think that what you got and 3 seconds later a very sharp and detailed picture. Lifelike is the key in which it beats Huawei, which adds fake colors and stabilization is worse. Also...don't buy a Huawei, notice what is going on with the google services suspension. Also, it's not only about the camera. The Google services work very smoothly if you use that a lot, maps/gmail/drive/photos/assistant/sheets etc. It's not that they built the phone around the camera. It's that they built a phone around Google and its in-house apps.

No need for Air drop due to google integration with your google account. Open your chrome browser and all your stuff is on their just select the app you want to use photos, drive etc. messages.android lets you respond to your messages from your computer...

This processor isn’t slow in this phone. Bring slower than others doesn’t make it slow, just not as fast. It can load some things faster than the Xr. Remember this is a pure google, not a 2015 Samsung phone. The processor is adequate.

There is an app to utilize dual screen on the iPhone; but I only recommend using it if you have a newer phone with an oled screen as it will run the battery down quicker on the lcd ones. You can also put an always on display on any phone; I saw a 2 minute video on how to do it. Bring on the 11 max; can’t wait to upgrade from the 7Plus .

I use the S10+, which is a very good phone. I picked up the 3a XL on Cyber Monday for 4oo.oo bucks with tax on Cyber Monday. The camera is simply amazing when shooting portrait or still shots. I give the edge on the XL over my S10+. Very impressed with the camera. You don't have to spend a g_whizz to get a great camera!

I bought an older version of Iphone 6S brand new 64gb in less than a month it was telling me that Icloud was full and it is not backing up my pictures, those phones you refer as junk, don't ever have that issue, put an SD card, use it as internal memory and viola lots of storage and don't have to give the manufacturer more money to back up my pictures, you can't do that with an Iphone at any price, the camera are good on the iphone, yes they are but not 700+ or 1000+ dollars worth, I like my money in MY POCKET! Not in apple's :)

You can't use SD slot as internal memory on new Android phones because the read and write speeds are way too slow. But you can use SD cards for movies and photos and videos. Google phones don't have micro SD card slots, they never have.

I currently have the iPhone 7 Plus, I would never buy a Mac because I am a gamer and use a PC for gaming. I have no need for a watch on either platform, but since I am considering upgrading my phone within the next year I may switch over to the Pixel 3a XL, unsure still but thanks for a great comparison video. I just bought a new pixel 2 xl for my brother: 363€ - better price than pixel 3a xl SD 835 - better processor than 3a xl metal back - far superior build quality than 3a xl Free Unlimited online storage for photos and videos in original quality - unlike pixel 3a xl Same UI, same camera software, front facing stereo speakers, IP rating, higher res screen.... The list goes on So, please anyone tell me why on earth pick the 3a xl over the more than 100€ cheaper 2xl?!

I got a 3a last Saturday...£399 here in the UK, got £50 trade in for my Galaxy S6 so 3350...3a is an awesome phone...I dont play games, I dont "process photos" I have a laptop for that, this phone does everything without a problem...burst mode is amazing, i didnt notice any save slowness..I watched a tin of YT vids doing comparisons and the differences against "premium" phones was negligible, ...glass back, just something else to break, unless you have a case which the hides the fact its glass anyway, who cares a fuck if its glass, Polycarbonate is a type of plastic but its a very tough type. Headphone jack which i need, i use external mic to record in "high" quality, only thing I miss is the notification multi-color led, means when im recording or whatever i can see if theres anything coming in without the sounds, not a deal breaker but would have been handy for me.. Do yourself a favour check out some of the reviews and real life comparisons and then see if you still want to spend £600 - £800 plus more than you really need to...

I guess what makes you question the longevity? My galaxy s6 has run strong for just over 4 years now, with no drops in speed in usability - my only issue is my charging port and battery are just worn out or I would keep using it another few years. Android doesnt seem to tank their own phones like IPhone does.

over all i would say the Iphone takes better pictures Yes the Pixel takes sharper images and the blacks are darker but i find the image is too dark on the pixel. I like vibrant pictures with over saturation.
