Thank You for the video. This was a pretty detailed one and I absolutely loved it. I currently own a Pixel 2 XL and I am planning to upgrade. In India, the Pixel 4a is available for 350 dollars, Pixel 4a 5g and S20 FE for 500, Vivo X70 pro for 600 and, Pixel 5 for 800. I love playing with the camera and I miss the telephoto lens in my Pixel 2 XL whenever I have to take a shot of moderately distant objects, say a bird perched on a tree. Unfortunately, neither the Pixel 4a nor the Pixel 5 provide a telephoto lens, My budget is limited to 500 bucks (600 stretch) which makes Pixel 5 out of reach. The choice is between 4a, 4a 5g, Vivo X70 pro and, S20 FE. Keeping the best in class display, IP 68 rating and the cost factor in mind, I think S20 FE provides best value. I am a huge fan of Pixel because of their camera and clean software(with timely updates), and the 4a 5g model selling for 500 dollars in India could have been an option but it doesn't provide a display as good as S20 FE and it also misses on telephoto lens and dust and water resistance. Besides S 20 FE has almost caught up with Pixel in Camera. They have promised OS and security updates with S20 FE so that's also not a problem anymore. It will take time for me to adjust to the Samsung UI. As for X70 pro, no clarity of OS and security updates, lack of IP rating, and a curved display seem deal breakers. I would very much appreciate your insights. Thank you again!

I was watching this on a 24 inch monitor and in the night sky pictures I could see some stars with the Pixels but not at all with the FE. I also think the colors were much more natural with the Pixel phones in daylight and in low light.

I do not like the oversaturation and over exposure of the s20 FE. However, its night mode is pretty good, and competes well with the pixels. The video seems a bit better on the s20 FE. That 4a is a great value for what it provides. Thanks for the comparison Grant 👍

Great job, and very comprehensive video review. I can imagine the amount of work that went into putting the video together. All 3 phones are very close, with the P5, IMO, probably edging out the other 2. The FE seems to consistently result in lighter skin tone. Whether that's more natural, or more "washed out", I guess depends on personal preference.

Grant, I hate to do this to you but if you go back and look at the footage at the tower. To me it seems like all cams have a varying degree of depth of field. At first I just thought the 5 was little more blurry on the background but when you focused in I was able to catch it.

Very extensive comparison. Well done. I have a Pixel 3a, which for the most part has been a good phone. Low light shots with the camera are great. After looking at the Pixel 4a, the Pixel 5 and the S20 FE, I decided to go with the Samsung. At $600 for select colors, it's currently priced exactly in the middle of the two Pixels. While the Google phone cameras are impressive, I didn't think the Samsung was too far behind. And if we're talking about everything else *besides* the camera, I think the Samsung is a better buy, especially compared to the Pixel 5. Super AMOLED, 120Hz, Bigger screen, better processor, SD card slot, bigger battery, etc. All for $100 cheaper.

Don't bother. The video quality on it is garbage with ridiculously over-saturated colours, sharpening, noise levels (even in good daylight conditions) and don't get me started on how bad the colour tone on it is!

If the P40 had Google I would've bought it, it's a beautiful device and cameras seem great from testing in a shop, although it's hardly the best place to test them. Great video! Pixel 4a best; most natural colours and the least oversaturated. Pixel 5 to oversaturated. And the Galaxy S20 FE - horribly oversaturated and colours waaayy off. It's like a cartoon looking at Samsung's photos. I thought they were getting better at this, but this is the worst I have seen. The cheapest phone best photos, but little less versatile camera.

Only you can answer based on how much you feel you need a wide angle camera. I wouldn't recommend spending 2x the money on the 5. If you're not sure, but concerned about the price difference, then maybe the 4a 5G is a good compromise.

I just got the S20 FE snapdragon version. This is not what I wanted to see hah. Thr pixel is so much more natural. The blue sky and greens on the S20 FE is pretty horrible in comparison. The red flower does lack detail due to exaggerated colors as well. I even believe my old Galaxy S7 would give more natural colors in good lighting conditions. Haven't compared them yet though since I havent unboxed the S20 FE yet. Is there a way to get more natural colors with the S20 lineup? Aren't these pictures taken with some "AI enhancements" or something like that, that can be turned off? I went for the S20 FE mainny for the versitality with three lenses but with this comparison I would've prefered one good one. However I think the chipset of the pixel lineup is a tad weak for longevity in the years to come.

The most processing lag is on the FE using night mode. Pixels allow you to keep snapping photos while the images process in the background.

My biggest problem with this video is right off the bat you have 2 phones at 60fps vs 30fps - obviously the 60fps is going to look much worse in lower light. Should of been 30fps across the board to show matched results

Ugh, I do exactly that for both good and low light later in the video at both 1080p and 4k. I maxed out the resolution and frame rate at the beginning to show for completeness. I also show it in good lighting, then turn it off for contrast. Not sure how many others take the time to do all that testing.

After 3 minutes I gave up watching as all the images up to that point were not fair comparisons. From the perspectives seen in the images it's clear that a longer focal length was used to take the Pixel 4a & 5 images than was used for the Samsung. Both Pixel phones sport a 27mm wide angle lens which was used for the images taken up to the 3 minute mark - The Samsung sports a 26mm wide angle that could have been used but instead it's 13mm ultrawide angle lens was used. This difference in focal length makes any comparison (bokeh, subject isolation, detail etc) worthless.
