I just ordered the pixel 8. I had the 4a5g and no longer get security updates as of November. The 8 was discounted about $150 so I figured it was a good time to trade up. The pixel 8 pro, even discounted was going to run over 900 (for 256g) and the extra features didn’t seem worth paying almost 350 more, at least for my uses. I figure I will pay less and then see what the 9 or 10 offers.

@@abdFA510 so far it’s been good. It’s definitely got a bit more pep than my 4a5g though it doesn’t feel like a quantum leap forward, but they were both running android 14 so maybe that’s it (maybe phones are just getting as fast as they can be now so it’s not so noticeable unless it’s really cpu intensive stuff). So far I do kind of miss the back side fingerprint reader but the one under screen works pretty well and with face unlock as well it’s not a huge loss. The screen on the 8 is very nice and my favorite thing so far is how bright it is in the sun, I can see everything clearly which I couldn’t say for the 4a. I work outside a lot so it’s been what I noticed lol. Also it’s the same screen size as my 4a but a smaller frame so it fits better in the hand a bit. Battery is pretty good and I use the phone a lot for gps (I spend a lot of the day driving so it’s screen is on for hours), streaming music, and communicating with work pretty much all day. It would last most all day I think but I always charge it when I’m driving if it gets around 30-40%. All in all a nice phone I think, though I’m glad I spent less and got the 8, I didn’t need the pro features Camera is good but all pixels have good cameras, though I can say they seem better, sharper with more detail maybe. I use the macro mode a lot for work to take images of circuit boards and stuff, it does a pretty good job seeing as how it’s doing it through software.

@@streetside2833 I got the 8 (256gb) for 600 and I’m more than happy. Glad I didn’t spend 1000, as there isn’t much the pro offered that I’m missing. The better cameras almost got me but I don’t take huge amounts of pictures and the 8 on its own is a nice improvement from the 4a. I basically decided that if I had any reservations about spending more it was better to just spend less, I’d rather miss out on a few features than wish I had $400 dollars back

In the US the P8P 256gb is $809. Trade in value of the 4a5g is $150 ($42 if putting it toward the P8). Not sure if that's relevant for anyone reading this. In googles marketing of Tensor, they made it seem that Pixel’s AI features are capable because of said Tensor custom chip, but after seeing Samsung on their new S24 with the 8 Gen 3 being able to do most if not all the same capabilities then it startles me. Just as you said, Tensor is a midrange chipset and thus the 8 series are incredibly overpriced.

You should watch in-depth text reviews side by side comparison between The Google pixel Pro 8. AI features and Samsung's AIS features. The Samsung AI features cannot touch the pixel 8 Pro. Although Samsung 's live translation for phone calls is clearly innovative in itself. Everything else is being copied from Google, including the new Google search feature. The 8 pro is still king of AI features and they won't be charging you to use all of these features starting December of 2025 like Samsung is doing. Check out In Depth Tech Reviews. The video is a literal in depth "side by side" comparison with both phones in hand.
@seapanda-1179 ай бұрын
@@ChasingStateyour reply is trying to distract from what the comment says. The commenter didn't say that Samsung was innovative on AI features, they said that Samsung is able to use the 8gen3 chip to run the AI features which exposes that Google saying that Tensor is required for this stuff as a lie or at best a misdirection. I'm not commenting on who has the best AI features or who invented each feature, and neither is the first commenter. You missed the point. Google could have used the better chip and modem but they chose not to and this is the sole reason I, and many others, are not using the Pixel series. Especially the network modems. They suck, and the main chipset is now also revealed to suck compared to the asking price because it is NOT required to run the features as Google claimed.
@ChasingState9 ай бұрын
If requiring a chip that is modified specifically for AI and machine learning is a midrange chip in other's perspectives, then that in itself is merely an opinion. Because efficiency rather than oversaturated power without complete optimization of AI is a gimmick in itself. Subpar is bringing Ai features to a phone without a high level of optimization with it's hardware. As of right now, a few of these features coming out of the S24 series are clearly gimmicks when compared to the Google 8 series line up. Efficiency and optimization is key. Google having control over its chip design is what allows the phone to run AI CORE so efficiently.

I'm pretty sure what's happening with video boost is that it's actually producing two separate videos files simultaneously and is therefore limited as to the quality of the file that's immediately available. It's either that, or it's capturing the one very high bit-rate file that's used for the boosted version, and downscaling it in near real time which seems very unlikely. I vaguely remember reading that this was the reason it was limited to the main sensor (Samsung GNK) as it's specially designed to be able to capture two files at the same time.

For me, the hype over AI is totally OTT. Many Pixel features are rarely used; even if they arrive in the UK, most still need to. Clearly, with a stagnant mature smartphone market, OEMs are pushing AI to market their devices to sell more (fair enough), but the reality is that a few months after you buy into that, you will wonder what all the fuss is about! I am a basic smartphone user, so no gaming, video editing and such like, so the Pixel 8 Pro is more than enough for me performance-wise, and its price makes it much better than the S23U in 2023 (£400 cheaper in the UK before great Pixel deals). I would recommend it. It has no thermal issues, battery life is 8-9 hours SOT over two days of use, and day-to-day use is smooth and fast.

I've had a Pixel 8 256GB for about a month. I had a Moto G60S before upgrading. I miss the 6.7" screen for multiple window, multi window is a near useless feature on this 6.2" screen size and the implemention with the rounding of the top/bottom of the 2 windows does nothing to help this. I liked the Moto screen more in general, plus its battery and charging. The camera quality on this Pixel 8 is much better, but nothing about this phone suggests it should be as expensive as its asking price. It has choppy performance/app launching and scrolling, bad battery life, and other quirks like the keyboard occasionally but too often opening and staying on screen for some reason after exiting out of apps. I only got it because I'm effectively paying £290 for it new, where its new asking price is/was about £699, and the Moto seemed to be stuck on Android 12 without any further updates. My Moto G60S cost £190 2 years ago, and I got £60 selling it, it was a good phone. Not sure I'd consider a Pixel again in future, this far into the Pixel lineage it shouldn't have been the gamble it turned out to be.

The 7 didn't stutter as much and they have the same chip. Dunno if they're throttling it or what. Hope the 8a doesn't suffer from the same issues. Camera is pretty solid so yeah, if you're going by MSRPs or just really, really want a plastic backed phone, then the A series is the best option. There's not enought distance between the middle child and the A series imo though. If the price for the A stays at $450 (highly unlikely) then it would be an absolute steal though.

G3 a mid range chip? It has last gen top of the line ARM cores, same core in the S23 Ultra and every other flagship X3. As a tech reviewer with an audience you should know this BTW you need to properly place you finger on the scanner, not the edge of your thumb🤦♂ Video Boost has been a game change for me no complaints. If you want the necessary data needed for Video Boost there at all time, you are gonna run out of storage in no time. Not a very well thought out video imo.

I'm sorry to have another little gripe , but the pixel 8 series often is branded as the smartest smart phone , and maybe in some areas it is , but ....... Using the speak aloud feature to read an article, lets say you iniate this in portrait , if you turn it to landscape while its reading it either stops or re starts from the begining, ok so you are in landscape and its reading the article fine , if you get halfway through the article and the phones display time out expires , it just stops reading ! How smart actually is it ? Even my allegedly dumb iphone can at least finish treading out aloud the article before shutting the phone down ! Too me , it is these small quality of life smarts and conveniences that make a smart phone smart and something i want to use. Pixel gets some other things right , but it still needs improvement in some areas.

Just got the phone around a couple of months ago. The phone is great but it is not for me because of the following reasons. : 1. I overlooked a very important aspect that 5g does not work despite of the phone supporting the frequency bands if the network/country is not approved by google. The VoLTE and Vo5G also does not work. I travel a lot for work in and around Africa and Asia and other than the official supported networks/countries the phone's software limits the network to 4g. 2. Honestly the network reception/stability was better in my older phone(One plus 8T). 3. A number of features are region locked to supported regions. 4.The service support network to repair the phone is not extensive and is limited. For top dollar I expected a little better. The above are the So my suggestion is that if you travel a lot, this phone might not be for you for the above reasons. Will definitely be looking to replace it in a couple of years if things do not improve. P.S:I have copy pasted the same comment from a number of other popular reviews in the hope of preventing from making the same mistake I did.

My main issue beyond the Tensor G3 in these phones is really the front cameras. From everythng i've seen in both video and images, google seems to have opted for a very soft high contrast processing which usually makes the images and video look both beautified but also eyes and face shadows look extremely unnaturaly dark. Like the person is possesed or something.
