I have spent the last 3 weeks or so trying to teach myself Plasticity. I have no formal CAD training, but want to learn to enhance my 3D printing hobby. This tutorial is by far the best one I have found and I have looked thru ALOT of plasticity tutorials in the past several weeks. Thank you so much taking the time to share you knowledge. I truly appreciate it.

Blender isn't the odd one out with Z up. It's just odd if your main package is Y up. Instead of camera space, it's based on world space. 3ds Max, Rhino and IIRC Moi3D are Z up as well, the latter two being closest equivalents to Plasticity for surface modeling. To me, Y up is strange having used 3ds Max & Rhino for almost 20 years. 😉Some allow the user to choose, like Fusion 360 and I think(?) Houdini.
@Pixelfondue10 ай бұрын
Yes, that's right. Generally 3D animation programs are Y up - 3DS Max and Blender being the only ones that are Z - and I'm talking to people who use Modo, Maya, C4D and Houdini primarily.
@Pixelfondue10 ай бұрын
But yes, you are totally right that CAD packages (and at this point Max practically is that) are generally Z up. Z is thought of as depth in animation (hence 'z-depth' outputs when rendering). In our brains Z is depth.
@chadvoller10 ай бұрын
@@Pixelfondue I generally think of it as a floor plan or base as XY, and Z would then be up. Either one works, and I usually adjust to Y up when doing work in Unity, which isn't a big deal. As long as they keep them color coded the same XYZ = RGB, I'm fine. 😆
@Pixelfondue10 ай бұрын
lol, yeah the colors help. Right, Archviz people are used the z-up as well. Having an option (like navigation options) is the best.@@chadvoller

Plasticity is about as far from Blender as you can get. It's geometry kernel (I believe) is the Parasolids one. Blender does not (and cannot - unless they license a solids kernel or develop one themselves) create geometry like this. Of coarse, it is Blender so maybe something like that already exists. At any rate - this has nothing to do with Blender outside of 3 or 4 keyboard shortcuts. It's more akin to Solidworks, Fusion360, MOI, Rhino, etc. Essentially taking the geometry kernel used in CAD design and manufacturing and making it artist friendly (at the expense of CAD usefulness)

For anyone else wondering, the word he repeats in just about every other sentence (at least for the first ten minutes, which is where I paused to figure this out) is Modo, not Moto. What in the everliving hell are you talking about? Just because the creators made the UI and shortcuts a bit similar to blender it's suddenly a copy? If CAD modelling was really so great in blender then way aren't most people doing this in blender already? Bdw, this started as an open source project and the source source code for the older one's are there. Check out the code yourself and tell me where it's copied blender code😂

Lots of apps will have the same navigation and basic keyboard shortcuts (move, rotate, scale) as popular apps to ease the learning curve. Generally Maya navigation and WER transform is chosen...in this case it's Blender. It's no biggie and helps new users.
@chadvoller10 ай бұрын
Huh? For one, Plasticity is using the Parasolids kernel, Blender does not. Second, in what way or where are they even similar? This has to be sarcasm.
@jimjohngirard8 ай бұрын
I'm fascinated with this program and want to support it. I will be coming to it from the Rhino 3d NURBS / SubD world and there are so many questions I have. Learning curve, etc. Also, other players in this space trying to kill it. For example, back in the day, Rhino 3d was making inroads into Alias turf and Alias tried to kill Rhino by no longer leasing it's kernal. Rhino had to rewrite from the ground up. As you know, 3d modeling programs have learning curves and that is the investment, not just the dollars. I'd be interested in your take on it's efficacy to a program like Rhino 3d. Thanks for this video
@Pixelfondue8 ай бұрын
We're actually coming from the world of poly/subD modeling so I (and I doubt William) don't have any real way to compare to Rhino. All I ever used Rhino for converting files. I think the main disadvantage would probably Plasticity's lack of 'history' - which is also part of it's strength - fast, direct modeling.
