Another well-designed and informative video. The discussion around your disciplined approach to crystallizing just what your requirements for an e-note tablet are, and to abide by those requirements (as opposed to being distracted by all the pretty features that are of low value to you) was a very helpful reminder of what is required to get to a final product decision. Bravo! The D&D template example gave me a smile....Gary Gygax would be glad to know that his product has gone where Remarkable has not (I'm guessing somewhere in Latin America)....still have fond memories of playing D&D myself...a long time ago :-).

So I just ordered the LAMY AL-star Black EMR stylus. I have been using LAMY Safari fountain pens for many years and I really like the grip and writing-feel. THEN I saw your video - and wow what an excellent idea you have to mix the EMR part with an AL-star Turmaline (teal) Rollerball ! Looks fantastic!!! -So I just ordered that one too :)

Excellent review. It is exactly as you say. The writing feeling is very different compared to Remarkable. In other side, the note taking resources are top. I would like a dedicated icon to switch quicker between Kinde app and notes, as far as I usually take notes when reading. The only issue I have is with the battery % on the last update. So, it is the best option for note taking but with a special writing feeling. I apreciate a lot the software updates, no doubt.

I’ve used the remarkable 2 for over a year and decided to get a Supernote a5X. My personal opinion is that it really depends on what you are looking for and what type of person you are. My remarkable 2 is well design and fashionably designed. The remarkable 2 is the ultimate in dumb tech where its never glitchy, super reliable and easy to use as I collaborate with others. Now the Supernote A5X definitely has a learning curve and personally there was too many steps to access features. When I write, I just write and I don’t need any additional cognitive load to look for features. (Side note, My 80 year old grandmother uses my remarkable 2 with ease). Also, the Supernote design is not as ascetically nice as the remarkable 2.

I must say, I found this video to be thoughtful, thorough, insightful and ...strangely relaxing. I was an early adopter of the reMarkable (v1) and I'm frustrated that it still falls short in some basic areas. They have begrudgingly and belated admitted that ePub v3 capability is poor and inconsistent, but despite their promises, fixes never seem to come. They seem more focused on monetising their users with a subscription model than delivering a good user experience for all users. Ho hum.

Your review must be really spot on because the reason for not choosing the Boox device was the main reason I went with it over the supernote device. I really needed a backlight! I also started with a reMarkable and finally jumped ship when 1) the R2 wasn't going to be that much better; 2) It was delayed AGAIN; 3) You were still going to have to rely on 3rd party hacks for some functionality.

I’m watching and rewatching your videos on Supernote. I had commented a few days ago about my excitement on the scribe. But after much research by many e ink content creators I came to the supernote as my choice 😊 now I am waiting on it to arrive. Thanks for your helpful video, I’ll probably be watching many more times. It helped too to see that Supernote is engaged with their community. And that I may never have to replace nibs. I want to be able to write a lot without worrying about changing nibs. That’s one thing that swayed me away from the scribe. One reviewer said they changed their nib after a month. 😅 Your video on size really helped me. Because I was wanting a large screen. And I know their A5x2 hasn’t come out yet. I didn’t want to wait without a sure date. So I almost went with Boox 10.3.. but I couldn’t beat the confidence I felt with investing more Supernote (with the long lasting nibs and the support they seem to have for their community, in case I did come across issues) I realized that most of the notebooks I use are small. And as a mother of four, I don’t really have time to sit for long notetaking sessions. So it felt nice thinking I can fill up a small page at a time.

Do you find that linking notes - linking your thinking - is an effective way to interconnect your notes with Supernote?
@fcf82692 жыл бұрын
Nice review; are you planning to make an updated one, since there were updates since February 2022? On a side note; I see that you use this device at the same time of the other devices... That basically defy the purpose of an eink screen to be honest. I assumed you wanted an eink display to not stare at your standard LCD all day, so you use your Supernote daily as replacement for your computer/phone for most part, limiting the amount of time you spend staring to an LCD. But if you just use the Supernote as companion, you are still staring at LCD screens... So it doesn't really help your eyes to feel less tired.
@pixelleaves2 жыл бұрын
I will probably do an update of some sort, but maybe not a full review as I don't want too rehash much ground! I believe that generally the points I make in the video still stand. Re: your side note - I checked and the portion of the video I'm using it with a laptop is because I was taking notes on an educational video/interview/demonstration. I can't afford an e-ink external screen, but even if I could, I think it's unreasonable right now to expect e-ink devices/tech to replace a laptop or phone for necessary tasks like video calls, educational video courses, specialized work tasks and apps etc. (and editing videos!) A short review also doesn't capture, for example, how much time I spend reading and annotating PDFs (which is a lot now with grad school) with just an e-ink tablet. Or the many times I *look away* from a screen to read, take and process notes, rather than typing them or keeping my eyes glued to another part of my screen, or using an iPad. So I disagree it "defies the purpose"; it's still lessening how much time you're looking at a regular screen overall, and enables you to take frequent breaks from LCDs/LEDs, which is really helpful to prevent eye fatigue in my experience.
@fcf82692 жыл бұрын
@@pixelleaves Thanks for sharing your thoughts. I agree that expecting eink display to support videos and video calls or other tasks is not reasonable; and to be honest for that a phone is just fine I think. The problem that many people have is to understand that you are not going to replace everything with one device no matter what, and eink devices are not different. Although there are things you can cram together in a cohesive experience, to get things done. As artist you would like a tablet with a lot of common filters and functionalities you expect from a paint software, and while you still need to watch videos and read email, you accept that. If you can get an artist centric device that does 80% of what you need, you are willing to spend the other 20% on activities that are not the major part of your work. In my case I am in meetings all day; so note taking is a big chunk of my workflow. Although then there is the other side of my job: planning, designing, organizing, reviewing and setting up milestones and deadlines with tasks. If I can get a device that let me take notes by hand, convert them in text; let me design and express ideas as if I was on paper, and then let me convert them in a format that my team understand (usually word, powerpoint, Trello, Miro and Onenote); then that is 80% of my workflow that could potentially be done on 1 device :) Won't give up my phone or laptop anyway, but I can walk around the office with 1 device, that is doing most of what I need, and make my life easier with minimal friction when I need to transfer data to different apps. As far as distractions and eye fatigue; I think it is subjective. I have my work computer with only the apps I need for work; nothing extra. I can easily block the web if I am not researching something, and with time I developed an unbreakable will to be focused on a task, so won't end up opening internet and waste hours in a rabbit hole. To me the concept of being distracted is a self imposed one... You own the device, you decide how to use it and force yourself to use it that way. I reward myself every 2 hours with 30 minutes of time wasting activities, so I never feel deprived. Some days I work 3 hours, some I work 10; depending if I need to focus or if the tasks are small and can be broken down. I don't feel like I need to forcefully cripple my life with a device to get things done, so I am failing to understand many people praising "distraction free" devices. This apply also to my screen time; if I work I am in front of a screen, otherwise I am not. I don't get fatigued unless I have to work long hours, because I avoid to use any device I don't need for work. It goes back to control your life, and not having devices control you... I prefer investing my time in something away from a monitor, so when I spend time on a monitor, that is accounted for. Thanks again for your very helpful thoughts; I found them very educational, independently if our workflows and needs are similar or not.
@pixelleaves2 жыл бұрын
@FCF Thank you so much for such a thorough reply. I wanted to clarify, for anyone coming across this as well, that when I referenced "looking away from a screen" etc. I really just meant the act of focusing your eyes on something that is not on a light-emitting screen (similar to the idea behind the 20-20-20 guideline) as an eye health measure. For me, personally, this is aspect of e-ink use is *not* linked to the idea of distraction or distraction-free devices. I want to draw a distinction between the two matters as I think they are separate. Both my full-time (remote) work and my studies require a certain amount of time in front of a monitor per day, which is out of my control--required video calls that can last hours, heavy use of Excel/specific work apps, drafting long documents, etc. I got LASIK surgery several years ago and have been more aware of my eye fatigue and measures to help prevent it since, including taking frequent breaks from working at a computer to look at non-light-emitting things. I used to set a timer on workdays to remind me to look away from my monitor every 15-20 minutes--now that's what felt unpleasantly "forced"! Naturally looking away from an LED/LCD to write, or read, or reference an e-ink tablet is far less intrusive, and gives my eyes nice, frequent breaks during the day which help me with eye tiredness. Preferring to read and annotate on e-ink is also purely an eye comfort issue for me. I just don't want that physical benefit to be lumped in with the more subjective, psychological ones surrounding focus or workflow. (And which I don't wish to argue on as they're different for everyone!)
@fcf82692 жыл бұрын
@@pixelleaves Thanks for your very valid points. I did not consider the case where someone may have eye problems; even as I am wearing glasses and got my eyesight getting worst and worst as age goes by; sometimes I forget that there are other cases where there are underlying conditions that benefit from not having to look at a screen emitting light. With that in mind, your comment does have a different take, so forgive me if I was being utterly dismissive of the benefits of not having to use a screen. As you said, the problem related to needing to avoid any emissive source as monitors, does not merge with the other debatable and personal opinions about eink benefits and potential marketing push towards marginal benefits. For some people those benefits are tangible and worth the price of a device equipped with this tech, so I think that it was a very well made point. Thanks
@pixelleaves2 жыл бұрын
Thank you as well, for sharing your thoughts on workflow! One reason I wanted to make my thoughts clear is I don’t personally don’t seek out systems or devices for being “distraction-free” as a priority. I didn’t want anyone reading my comment getting the idea that I have more experience or information in that area than I actually do.

Greast review. I was planning on getting the A5X but I'm not so sure now having seen how the A6X looks in your hands. I will measure it out on paper and feel for myself, great idea 💡

Thank you for mentioning, even if briefly, remarkables limiting of their product, requiring you to either pay or use this party fixes

This video is fantastic. I was specifically looking for info about searching. You use the keywords and stars, but I assume you can’t search text specifically? Ha- you answered that right as I finished typing. I dont know that any have that function… Finally- amen on dropping device on face as you fall asleep😂

This is a great video, thank you!! Could you speak on the battery life you get in your use case?

I don’t really time it and just top up when I remember, but I think other users charge every week-9days for the A6X

Hey great review, thank you for taking the time, really beneficial!! A couple questions, does the Supernote have a web browser and does the kindle app have that feature that kindle does where you can click on a word a get its definition?

hi, like your videos and i made up my mind for the a6x because you showed it next to the kindle. can you do a video of how you use the flash drive such as sinking and transferring files? also was looking for the lamy pen that you have with other colors but the page comes up with other pens on amazon, can you paste the correct lamy pen for us? thank you and keep the videos coming.

Hi! The exact one I got, I got locally: Lamy AL-Star Rollerball pen in the color Pacific. I linked to the listings/search as I wasn’t sure what color people like/what’s available where they are. Tourmaline is the most similar to me from those listings, if you're looking for that. :) The moving and so on is just like moving/transferring files on the device, the thumb drive will show up as another “folder” under Files. You can use it normally: just hold the file you want to move/copy and the options will show up on top of the screen. Hope that helps!

Hi, How long lasts the battery of the Supernote A6X in full use ? I'm looking into getting it for taking notes in class, but I would need it to last at the very least 4h, 5 and more would be better. But I can't find any opinion about how long it lasts when you use it a lot. Thank you !
@pixelleaves2 жыл бұрын
I hesitate to give a number because I don't use it for that long in one go (I use it intermittently throughout the day, or for meetings of an hour or so at a time)... I think it can definitely, easily do at least 4h (taking notes, with wifi off) but I don't know how long maximum. Hope this helps anyway!
