Rewatching this now, the picture on the back of your jewel case looks to be a distressed picture of a shotgun shell with a bunch of timestamps on it with deliberate spots where the picture didn't "develop" properly.

I remember being scared spitless while playing the last episode when I was younger. In broad daylight. At my grandmother's house. The shareware was okay, but the gameplay and soundtrack really came together at the end for me, scraping by with fewer and fewer bullets, hoping desperately that I wouldn't get jumped by a teleporting fiend or (even worse) a shambler. It's not aged very well, I know, but I always have and always will love Quake. (Quake II can go hang, though, for dropping the gothic architecture.)

There are many opinions about when the oldschool age of PC gaming ended and the new age began, and Quake is a pretty good point to choose. If you dig deep into it, you can see that it was experimental in many ways, but ultimately it is a pretty good FPS experience. BTW, I'm one of the admins of the Quake Wiki - not exactly a very popular place, but we keep it nice and tidy :)

It's really refreshing to hear you say what you said at 18:33. Back in the day, I never could get into Quake at all. Granted, I wasn't too much of a first-person shooter kind of gamer back then (I was completely hooked on graphic adventures), but I did enjoy Doom and Duke Nukem 3D *a lot*. Quake always repelled me with its extremely boring look - it still looks like somebody puked Indian food on rusted metal everywhere...

Strangely, I'm in the weird spot of this being my first FPS game ever, and this being one of the FPSes I rarely go back to. I dislike Reznor's soundtrack, which again puts me in the minority. But I can't deny its impact on gaming as a whole. Without Quake, a lot of standards would've never come around. Really good review, man. :)

I was just replaying Quake the last couple of days thanks to all the 20th anniversary articles I read on the internet lately. It go me an itch to find my old Quake CD and fire it up in DosBox. I have the 1997 re-release, which supports 3D acceleration, but DosBox doesn't support 3D acceleration of any kind. I heard there are source ports that restore 3D acceleration and add back various lighting effects, which existed in the software rendered version, but were cut from the hardware accelerated one for some reason.

Seems like my copy doesn't incluse GLQuake, even though the date on the box says 1997 and there's a 3dfx logo. Weird. I'll just use DarkPlaces, it looks to be much better than the original GLQuake, adding in all the lighting effects omitted in the hardware renderer, fixing some color issues, making the baked shadows work properly, fixing texture scaling issues, fixing aspect ratio for 19:6, bringing back the warping effects underwater and some other neat things.

Thanks for the in-depth commentary, I always enjoy them :) I'm amazed that that footage was direct from DOSBox and wasn't from a source port - it's held up remarkably well for a 20 year old game. The bosses really are rubbish, though... as is the Shambler's silent lightning attack. None of the monsters really came close to how iconic the Doom ones were!

Back then, they most likely couldn't figure out how to implement redbook audio streaming through digital means (although the sheer lack of anything related to the soundtrack does suggest that they also cheapened out on the licensing..), and is the same thing that happened to the steam release of Jedi Knight.

The lack of bosses were largely because of the game's troubled development. This was something that was relatively fixed with the expansions. Personally the predictability of the level design was a benefit to the game for me because the entire game felt like it funneled you to keep replaying it over and over again but doing it faster and faster. The speed in Quake was something I adored and it's simplicity in this regard felt intentional. It always felt best to play Quake like you were trying to finish each level faster and faster. The other aspect of Quake I really liked was it's fan community since the game had a huge custom map community that still makes maps today.

Most of Duke 3D advantage came from the powerful but non-user friendly BUILD program which allow you to make interesting maps thats violates some real/true 3D constructs.
@elimalinsky7069
@elimalinsky7069 8 жыл бұрын
+Pixelmusement Quake benefitted from being fully 3D, while Duke was still using the pseudo-3D Build engine. The fully polygonal enviornments meant verticality and multistorey levels were a thing. I myself enjoyed Duke 3D more than Quake, the latter was too dark and gloomy for my taste. I remember Duke 3D running much faster and being more action packed. Duke was also a harder game, Quake wasn't even that difficult in perspective, relative for its time when games were brutal. Both games were released a few months apart and there was a kind of a competition between the two, but they had a very different style and mood and to me they're not comparable. I never played any of the multiplayer in both, as I wasn't aware of dedicated servers at the time, and my friends just all played single-player anyway. I did play Doom over IPX with friends around 1995-96. It was like some kind of black magic or sorcery, being able to shoot characters who were controlled by your friends back then. It was an unimaginable technological achievement for me and my friends at the time.

The REAL reason Quake is so warmly remembered is, really, just it's timing. It was extremely lucky to be released in the time when internet was hitting it's biggest "growth spurt". Without the internet, without easily distributed mods - no one would care that much. It didnt hurt that it was the time when even children could throw a cable over to the neigbouring house and make their own LAN. Loads and loads of people in my school did it, cables all over the place.

+Prince Vegeta The reason I say Quake was more influential than Doom is because of the legacy. Doom started the revolution in 3D gaming, but Quake solidified many of the concepts and paradigms still in use today, including mouselook, in-game consoles, rocket jumping... I guess it does kinda depend on your perspective a little, but I was looking at it in terms of "what aspects of these games are still used in games today?" and by that logic, Quake wins. :B

It even ran on a 486 DX33, even though the minimum requirements stated that you need a Pentium-60. It was, as you might imagine, unplayable. But hey, at least you got to play a slideshow of a fully polygonal FPS on the same machine that you needed to run Doom II.
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 8 жыл бұрын
Eli Malinsky The minimum was having an FPU at all, either internal to the CPU or external. The recommended was a Pentium 75. This is straight from the manual. So yes, a 486DX/33 fits the minimum spec... but would definitely play really poorly without shrinking the screen size. :P

there were two errors in your review : first off, quake's weakest armor is green, not blue.... also, despite 99% of the game indeed being 3d models, there are actually 3 sprites in the game. the light-orbs used in the underwater area at start of E4M7 are sprites, there are water-bubbles which are used in a couple maps that are sprites, and the fire-ball in center of the explosions is also a sprite
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 8 жыл бұрын
+talisa melodie If you want to get REALLY technical, the armour is cyan, which is halfway between blue and green, but I find people often look at me funny when I call something cyan so I just say blue out of habit. And yeah, I thought what extremely few sprites there are in the game were simply handled by the particle system, but I've been told that the game has a sprite system in place. It's really curious though that Id would go through the effort of making one for the game then barely use it. :B
@talisanachtkind
@talisanachtkind 8 жыл бұрын
***** hmm yeah it is a kinda dull shade of green yes, but its defintely not blue. but yeah its interesting that ID put an entire particle-system in place just for 3 whole effects which couldve been easily done with 3D models instead. although underwater-bubbles wouldve looked kinda funny without transparency i guess. but the light-orbs in E4M7 wouldve looked just as good as a 3D model, and in quake2 explosions are actually done with 3D models instead of sprites

So, Gemini, I have several interesting, at least I'd think they'd be interesting, discussion filler video ideas in the future related to this game in one form or another. The first one is a technical discussion of the unofficial MS-DOS backport of Quake II, which was originally only released on Windows 95, Mac OS 9 and various Linux/BSD distributions. Considering Id Software was amazed at the fact that the game could run on the Sony Playstation, as they originally didn't think that the consoles couldn't run anything using the Quake engine/Id Tech 2, this probably would've made a few of their jaws drop. The second one would be an overview of Lobotomy Software and a look at their SlaveDriver engine, named as such as it was originally made to port their FPS, PowerSlave, to consoles instead of using the Build Engine the game originally ran on for its MS-DOS release. The SlaveDriver engine was what put the development firm on the map, as it was used for both the Sega Saturn and Playstation ports of PowerSlave, as well as the Saturn ports of Duke Nukem 3D and Quake. The company was bought up, and later dissolved, by Crave Entertainment in 1998. Considering their SlaveDriver engine was also used for a couple other games, including the console-exclusive surreal FPS known as "PO'ed", I feel like they probably could've been another major name in gaming if they weren't forced into becoming nonexistent. The third and final video idea would be talking about the various odd official and unofficial ports of the first two Quake games. Id Software didn't know how pliable the Id Tech 2 engine was, so they didn't allow/made a console port of the first Quake (N64) until well after Quake II was shown working quite well on the PS1, with some modifications to level architecture enemy placement of course. The first two Quake games have been ported, officially and otherwise, to a number of different pieces of hardware and software over the years including, but not limited to: The Commodore Amiga, Nintendo DS/3DS, older versions of Windows Mobile, Adobe Shockwave/Flash, HTML-5, and the Brazilian mobile BREW console known as the Zeebo. Considering you're a programmer and game designer yourself, I think there is a lot you could talk about with these subjects, and while I can't speak for everyone, I can certainly say I'd find it interesting what input you'd have on Quake ports in general. And hey, if you wanted to, you could certainly lump all of these together into a single video. Again, just a filler video idea for the future if you need one. Thanks for reading this long-winded comment.

When a DOS game is offered on both Steam and GOG, always choose GOG. Steam doesn't understand DOS games and their pakcages are very poorly assembled. Example: Steam Doom lacks the setup program, making it impossible to even redefine your controls... if the game runs at all, that is. Plus, Steam usually bundles older versions of DOSBox.

So, that is what we call a "Source Port". All legitimate source ports are designed to require that the player supply their own data files from their own copy of the game. Thus what you would do is have a legitimate copy installed on your computer, then the source port you download SHOULD tell you what steps to take to properly transfer over the data files so it can use them for playing the game, or may even have a means of doing it automatically when you boot it up while having the mobile device connected to your computer.

"no sprites" is a slight overstatement; the core of the explosion effect is an animated sprite... Quake II did have fully 3D rendered explosions, but IMHO they don't look as good as the sprite-and-particle effect used in Quake.
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 8 жыл бұрын
+Stuart Brockman Given that the explosion core is the only "sprite" in the game, it may actually be handled by the particle system. I don't actually know enough about the internals of Quake to know that for certain though, but it would be silly to write an entire sprite handling system for just one effect. :P
@DoombringerFPS
@DoombringerFPS 8 жыл бұрын
Quake got an animated sprite system that works outside of the particle system (.spr extension). The particle system in base Quake is only colored pixels. So the sprites system is added as an extra boost to the visuals of that. There are a few more sprites in the game outside of the explosion effects. The bubbles when you drown for instance and an additional sprite called "light" that is as far as I can tell unused. But it's fairly minimal stuff for sure.

Dude one thing I feel you forgot to mention: Any 3D game we have in existence today owes its existence somehow to Quake. Many modern game engines are either directly based on Quake's engine, or heavily inspired by Carmack's work on it.
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 3 жыл бұрын
That's only partly true as a lot of other companies were throwing their hat into the ring with their own engines both before and following. I think it's safer to say that Quake helped push the tech forward, rather than being directly responsible for the way first person shooters evolved. I mean, just as an example: Quake had the ability to mouselook but did NOT do this by default; you had to hold an assigned key or button down, and while it was possible to give yourself permanent mouselook it had to be done through the game's config files or console; there was no menu option to do it! :P

It's funny, I think I always had that thing on the tip of my tongue as to why Quake wasn't as enjoyable to me outside of its technology, and the level design is certainly lacking compared to Doom (or Duke 3D, or Terminator: Future Shock/SkyNET). I guess as it's talked about, the troubled development certainly didn't help there, resulting in what we got with some of that. It's also been great to just see pure software rendered Quake again - especially after seeing a whole bunch of source ports. Still amazing that it actually *can* run in DOSBox even if it likely requires some high-end machine to do it. Awesome review man!

I don't think Quakes level design is a flaw. Just because DOOM's levels were more colorful, doesn't mean they were more fun to explore. Quake's textures were far more realistic and immersive than compared to DOOM's cartoon style graphics. And you only found Quake's level design too "predictable", just because the game has been out for 20 years. And I don't think that's a bad thing, the levels are so classic that the map layout becomes like second nature. I don't think someone that has never played Quake before, would be able to make it through Quake without getting lost at least a couple of times. Still, great video! You are a very knowledgeable person.

+DinoGuts As mentioned, the biggest issue with Quake's levels is that *everything* is a trap. Having traps are fine, Doom did this too, but Doom paced them far better and some of the ones in Doom weren't predictable. Quake has so freaking many that you just start expecting a trap every single time you find something in an even remotely peaceful spot. The overall architectural design of the levels in Quake is perfectly fine. :B

Been on sort of an FPS kick lately. Funny thing is for how universally praised Quake is now, I remember back when it was new (and even for years afterwards) there was a bit of cynicism about it. "Duke 3D vs Quake" was a common argument, on par with Sonic vs Mario. I also remember this being the start of a period where people would say "Id Software no longer makes games, they make engines." Speaking personally, I remember a time when I hated Quake, because of the boring weapon selection and the over-reliance on boring brown levels. But over time the game grew on me to the point where a few years ago I wound up positively addicted to it, and when I play now I often have to control myself in order to not end up running through the entire campaign in one go. Doom is still better overall, but Quake ain't bad. I never did play Quake II though. Funnily enough I do have Quake III Arena, which I find pretty fun even if I'm forced to play against bots.

For me it was always the architecture of the levels which was the most interesting aspect. Heck, once I had access to the Build Editor through Duke 3D, I would often make levels just to experiment with what was possible in terms of level design, and not in the sense of trying to make anything coherent or part of a narrative, thus how I ended up with maps such as the one which looked like Sim City when I was covering Duke 3D level editing. Quake was no different, I just didn't do a lot with it because it was more difficult to make stuff and this was also right around when I was learning what MegaZeux was. :P
@EdmondDantes224
@EdmondDantes224 5 ай бұрын
@@Pixelmusement Your MegaZeux mention reminds me of one of those things... I always hear people talk about games getting "dated" or how modern gamers can't go back to whatever because they're spoiled.... But you just said you got into MegaZeux after playing Quake, and I personally only got into Ultima and Dragon Warrior *after* playing Final Fantasy VII and the like, and I know plenty of people (especially younger people) who enjoy games like Donkey Kong and Ms. Pac-Man. So I wonder where that stereotype comes from.
@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 5 ай бұрын
@@EdmondDantes224 It comes from the people who actually approach games in that manner where "new is best", no matter what. I actually know a couple people like that; They have almost no nostalgia for old games at all, save for maybe a couple they played a ton of. Everything else to them is not worth touching if it's not new and current. :(

Well, I guess you're not into electronic music and dark/industrial ambient if You think Quake soundtrack shouldn't be listened on its own. I actually spent most of my teen years listening to this kind of stuff. That was one of my favourite albums: /watch?v=SwulHyAl66U ...and this is even darker than Quake soundtrack. Try playing Quake with that.

It's still worth getting the GOG version no matter what, at least this one comes with a working soundtrack(Least in DOS in case of GLQuake or source port, you have to rip em from the disk image that is located in main folder), sure there is the Ultimate Quake patch for Steam, but it's terrible by current standard due to a very outdated source engine (a version from 2010!) and a meh music quality. Speaking of music the GOG Version has an incorrect cue sheet which results in music playback being off, but there is a fix for this in here: community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/744-fixed-gamecue-sheets-for-quake-the-offering-gogcom-version/ Currently, for playing Quake i suggest getting GOG version (with that fix applied and music tracks ripped in any format) and then use Quakespasm , but if ya want to play online, grab yourself nQuake.

@Pixelmusement
@Pixelmusement 5 жыл бұрын
+Wiseman Because Quake runs extremely poorly on a 486 of any speed because of the lack of floating point optimization. It's really interesting to see DOSBox tackle a game that a real 486DX4 can't handle. :B

Well, I played the gog release and it doesn't come with the music included (Neither does the Steam version), probably because of separate copyright issues. There's a fix, but for me it only ended up playing every music track for one loop and then stopped... maybe I did something wrong, but I couldn't get it to work properly. In any case, I really couldn't get into this game as much as I could Doom or especially Duke3d. Part of that is that they scrapped Doom's pistol and made the shotgun the weakest weapon. As a result, all weapons feel one step weaker and less satisfying to use. No firing a rocket or grenade into a group of enemies to gib them all here. I mean, it's not as bad as Unreal with regards to bullet spongy enemies, but paired with the music problems and the lack of any nostalgia because I couldn't play it as a kid... yeah, couldn't enjoy it, sadly.

I feel the opposite way. Doom's levels, even if they are more varied, feels better structured to me, while Quake's levels feel much more arbitrary. Quake reuse the same tricks a lot, but that is not really the same thing. While a Doom level may seem more confusing at first (especially Hall's mazey levels) by the time I've finished it I've got a lot better feeling of the level itself, while in Quake I can often get trough a level and still have no idea what was going on or any real feeling of progression before suddenly "Oh? That's the end? Okay...".
