Pixies - Bam Thwok (Lyric Video)

A classic slice of noisy, uptempo Pixies stomp from the start of their 2004 reunion, which seems to be largely forgotten, disparaged or ignored for some reason. People should try listening with their ears. This is prime Pixies.
The song was released exclusively thro' the iTunes Store in June 2004. Originally composed & recorded for the film Shrek 2, it was not ultimately selected for inclusion on the final soundtrack.
Asked to contribute a song to the film, Black Francis & Kim Deal began composing riffs for a song aimed at children. Deal had been experimenting with a chord progression for a while, and since The Breeders were inactive at the time, she decided to donate her new composition to Pixies. The band chose Deal's riff, as it was a "poppier, more kid-friendly thing" & Francis agreed to let her sing lead vocals
& write the new song. This gesture was meant to warm the previously
cold relations between the two - on the previous two Pixies studio LPs, Bossanova (1990) and Trompe le Monde (1991), Francis had not let Deal contribute any songs or sing lead vocals. This became one of the reasons for Pixies' 1993 split. However, the two appeared at the time to have resolved their differences: Francis praised "Bam Thwok," as "a really good song."
However, Deal eventually left the band in June 2013 before the 2014 release of the band's new album, Indie Cindy, to concentrate on her
other band, The Breeders.
The theme of "Bam Thwok" is, according to Deal, "about loving everyone, showing goodwill to everyone". The lyrics are typically surreal & offbeat; Deal's main inspiration for the song and its title was a discarded art book she found on a New York City street while on tour in the late 1990s.
She later described the book: "From the handwriting, you could tell that
this book must have belonged to a little kid. This kid had written a short story, a paragraph really, about a party that took place in another universe, about people and monsters that were partying together. That's what provided the inspiration for the lyrics."
A fifteen-second "carousel-esque" organ solo appears approximately midway through the song. The actual sound clip was performed and recorded by Santiago's father-in-law "many years ago" while he was a missionary in the Philippines (or so it's claimed). Is that the whiff of
band-bullshit-wind-up the media I can smell?
Also in 2004, as well as releasing this song, the band contributed a rendition of "Ain't That Pretty at All" to the Warren Zevon tribute album 'Enjoy Every Sandwich, with Kim's voice once again to the fore, this time sharing vocal duties equally with Francis. More importantly that too is a blistering piece of rampant unhinged Pixies all of which boded well for
the reunion. Strange then that one of the reasons for her departure, albeit 9 years later, was Kim's reluctance to record new material with Pixies which Francis had mooted several times during that period.
I read a short interview with Kim somewhere where-in the gist was
that she didn't want to damage the legacy of their recorded output.
A real shame in my opinion as these 2 recordings strongly suggest
there would've been nothing to worry about. Without Kim the band has now released as much music in phase 2 as they did in their original
period, a decent chunk of which is very very good & some is outright excellent.
