I was in university when Doolittle came out in 89. Changed my life for sure, still my desert island album. I always said then I just want to see them play it live. In the 2010's they did a Doolittle Tour and played it front to back, note for note! Both shows I saw, the entire audience...ranging from old guy me to current university students...everyone sang along with every word, every guitar solo, every Kim Deal vocal. It was remarkable...kind of like watching that Rush Rio crowd sing along to YYZ. But for the whole album...bliss!

"Hey" is such a brilliant song , completely unique . Fantastic to see whole sections of the audience singing each word like you said , came across as almost like a religious event , such was the passion from the crowd !

Hole in the sky could also possibly refer the hole in the ozone layer.

You are broadly right about "Monkey gone to heaven" Rory ! From wiki ....."Monkey Gone to Heaven"'s main theme is environmentalism. The song mainly deals with humanity's destruction of the sky and ocean and "confusion of man's place in the universe". "On one hand, it's [the ocean] this big organic toilet. Things get flushed and repurified or decomposed and it's this big, dark, mysterious place", Black later said, "It's also a very mythological place where there are octopus's gardens, the Bermuda Triangle, Atlantis, and mermaids."[4] Francis came up with the song's hook, "this monkey's gone to heaven", long before the song itself was written. The line itself forms a basis for the song, which revolves around humanity's relationship with the divine and environmentalism.

Just brilliant! I always put the hole in the sky down to being a reference to the hole in the ozone layer, which was a pretty big issue in the late 80s when Doolittle was released.

Other great Pixies songs are Gouge Away and Where Is Your Mind. There was a great performance of Gouge Away at Eden Project easily found on KZbin. The bass player has changed from Kim Deal to Paz Lenchantin, but Paz is just as good.
