I cannot emphasize enough how this video has improved my black and white to color images. I create coloring books and colorize them for the covers. This step is a TOTAL GAMECHANGER! The images after colorization are crap until using the steps outlined in this video. There is virtually NO noise or pixelation. I don't know how you figure these things out but I am forever grateful and appreciate all the time and effort you put into your videos.

I have always struggled with coloring black and white images. That's right, sometimes even the neural filters don't yield satisfactory results plus, all that amount of manual painting job was such a pain. Thanks a lot by sharing this trick. You Sir are indeed an expert in the photo editing and designing skill.

Just tested the AI colourising thing on a photo from my wedding, I have the original colour shot and a black and white version of it, the AI did a surprisingly good job - a solid 8/10. Things it missed were the colour of the stone walls in the background (by a lot), skin tones were over reddened and navy blues were shown as black or dark greys. It also seemed to have some issues with working out what was visible between legs - in my case it made the grass a deep red. It's very impressive none-the-less, it would just need some minor tweaking to make everything look right.

I can think of two features to make this much better. They should add a color picker option for parts of the image. I have a black and white photo of a scale model but I have the real world pantone values of the paint used when it was manufactured. It could apply the correct colorization that way. They should also allow you to upload an image that already has the coloring/style you want to apply so the AI can analyze it and give your photo the same look. I would buy a plugin or software that does this in a heartbeat.

I learned this little trick from you and I have just gone back to the website just now. You can no longer do this as they put a watermark on the small image that you use to bring in a change the layer to colour. Just thought I would let you know.

You know what, fun is fun. People do coloring books, it's a fun process to color things. If it is a money business and you need it all done super fast, then AI is a great thing too. I work in an office where I have to get photoshops done in minutes. I have little choice but use shortcuts.

Regarding finding collections of old photos, I used to go to local postcard fairs and there were always lots of old Victorian, Edwardian etc. photos, too, and they were relatively inexpensive. Lots of Daguerre types and reproductions on postcards dating form the period. It's fascinating looking at the faces of people who are now long gone who were in their prime when the photo was taken. You can easily build a good collection this way.

Hi , I found a not perfect but acceptable solution . Most of the times they put the watermark in the same place , so rotate your pictures until the watermark is someplace where dark pants or unimportant place of the picture is , if the place is dark it will be invisible . When you change the blending to color from photoshop the watermark disapears anyway , it's just a small dark rectangle barely visible , if it's on a dark spot (like pants and such it will be invisible).

It’s exactly what I was thinking soon it he pointed out it’s the low res version, as in compression one tip is reduce the resolution of the colour and maintain more of the grayscale channel as the human eye is more sensitive to contrast than colour. Good tip tho now it’s made more people aware of this trick I bet it won’t be long they be adding water mark unless you pay

Awesome, thanks for sharing. Compare to colorize in PS, it's streets ahead. I've been trying to colorize a B&W film, but the colors are not always correct and suffer from flashes of red or blue in places. I don't have the knowledge to fix this, but it would be neat if I could run the whole thing through Palette FM to get the consistency - or perhaps colorize all 200K frames individually 😂

I think a lot of these new AI colourization tools are amazing but they are opinionated about what constitutes a recolouring of the image in a way that looks a bit like old sepia tone instead of modern rich color. I think this could be to do with the training models they use relying on old color print processes instead of modern ones. While this can simulate an "authentic" looking recolourization, what I'd really like to see is full rich color restoration, including eyes, lips, hair etc. and chromatic shift in shadows. Too often recolorization from black and white looks like a solid blob of color overlaid on some blending mode rather than actual full color restoration accounting color reflections, bounce light etc.

I hate it when people try to replace the beauty of black and white and invent colors for the image. As there is no way to know what the original colors in the image were. The clothes that are shown as blue, for example, could have been a shade of green, grey, purple etc. The creamy wallpaper could have been a pale pink, blue or green etc. This means the colorized version is little more than a misleading interpretation. This means the personality of the person is ignored. Most people have favorite colors, and other colors they detest. To put a person in blue when they would never wear blue is disrespectful. Old black and white photographs have a lot of beauty all of their own, and it conveys the sense of the time when the photograph was taken. It puts us in touch with these people. We can imagine them looking through family photographs, most or all of which would be black and white. It helps us experience their time and lives.
