Fact is, today's Gibson is selling fakes of the original Gibsons made back in the day when Gibson made incredible guitars. A 2014 Les Paul is really a fake of a 1960 Les Paul. You cannot buy the same quality guitar today as you could in '60. Gibson just owns the trademarks so legally they have the right to call it "the real thing". If you want one, that's fine - if you want to spend 4 grand, which is insane. So you can spend 4K on a Gibson imitation from Gibson, or $300 on a Gibson imitation from the factory in China that makes them for Gibson.

Finally a guy that understands what I thought when I bought my LP Custom SG. First of all, curiosity, and it was cheap, US$ 230 shipped!! I wanted a 3 humbucker guitar and 230 was not even close to the other options, like any Epiphone or luthier guitar on my country, I would've spent at least US$ 500 used. By spending only 230, I would not be afraid to dig new holes, mess around heavily on this guitar. And I was pretty sure that it was not a Gibson. haha! Kept the pickups because they sound great!! But changed the pots and did a lot of cosmetic changes. Knobs, truss rod cover (3 screws to 2 screws), neck plate, 3 way switch, did a custom shaped pickguard. The bridge and stop tail felt really light and plasticky, some saddles did not even work, had to change it. The tuners work perfectly and had to replace a couple of frets. Did a 3 volume 1 tone wiring also. I spent almost US$ 180 revamping this guitar. And I can tell you that is my go to guitar. Have a nice expensive Gretsch, and do not think that plays as nice as my SG LP Custom. Yes, the diamond is smaller, the body is squished, the neck and headstock I think they're a bit smaller also. But it is so good looking!!! At first glance feels like a Custom shop guitar, but it's not!! 3 piece mahogany body, one piece mahogany neck, great grained, heritage cherry finish with gold hardware. The fretboard is a mystery for me, it does not look like rosewood and does not look like ebony, it is some kind of dark, hard wood. Maybe some asian wood. Who knows. Anyway, just put a black sticker on top of the Gibson and diamond logo and the whining will stop. I never wanted a Gibson, just wanted a 3 humbucker guitar that I could mess around. Cheers!! Great videos!!

I'm very selective with the guitar guy's and girls I watch on youtube, but you have the killer personality which comes across as if you have known your audience for years. Thats a really good trick to have up your sleeve. It's funny here is a video where you talk the talk and it's all good. I'm always curious about knock off products......keep em coming

Speaking of Kiss.....They're100% the reason I started playing in '79. I was 15 and me and my best friend went into String's and Thing's in Memphis, TN one afternoon and was talking to the owner about our favorite band Kiss as we was looking at all the different types instruments avail....... so the owner told us to follow him he had something to show us. We went into the dark seldomly accessed drum kit room and the guy pulled down off the shelf a aluminum anvil flight case and asked me to open it.... Lord and Behold, it was the actual/real deal Ibanez Paul Stanley Iceman on loan to the store for a upcoming 2+ years display high out of reach in the showroom. It was the second most important day of my life since birth. I lifted the neck in my left hand and left the rhinestone ravenged/scared body sit in the case and I gave her a strum. That magical moment did it for me... I was hooked. Later that week, I went into the Musician's Shop in Jackson, MS and bought a brand new 1979 Gibson Les Paul Custom wine/gold w/chainsaw case $1200 (liked Ace's Les Paul's better is the reason I chose it.) Sad to say it got stolen at Ole Miss in '88. Makes me sick coz it's worth 4 times more today than I paid for it new : . ( Well, 2 years went by w/o a guitar and I called up SNT in Memphis to see what they had avail. salesman told about a used Jackson Soloist '87 Ferrari Red USA Custom (smoked everything in the shop new or used) for $1200. Actually got it for $1000 it had the original price tag and construction sign off cards included... showed $2375 when new.... played it 23 years until it's nearly worn out and 2 years ago bought a used "08 GLPC Oxblood from Guitar Center in Nashville $2600....... Nice but not my long lost "79 by no means!!!!!!! Thank You Kiss for your inspiration : . ) enjoyed the video brother.......

What's the Weight?? and where did you get it from?? You said it's heavy. Got one the other day and it was horrible light! Weighs 8# 2oz versus a real Gibson of this model, which weighs almost 10# (9.75)! You also state this one has the nibs on the frets?? If so, most don't, so that's huge.

Same here. I scored a surprisingly nice Squier for $90 a couple of years ago. I try to keep the base cost under $300 if at all possible and then just upgrade the hardware. Besides, they make nice winter projects in mid-January when the holidays are over and things get a bit boring.

Same here! I didn't have the 8' poster, but I did have the Ace, Paul, Gene and Peter "Aucoin" set that you mention, plus the matching poster that's like the inside of Kiss Alive II. There was a set of pinups with all the members in a futuristic scenario. I remember Peter with what looked like a glass rod saber, or some thing like that. Even the little spots that were open above the closet door were covered in KISS cards. Remember them? I had almost a complete set.

I think my 1980 big scrap book and Kiss collection will have to be seen on youtube...that is if Gene does not pull copyright over it..LOL At school I was one of but 2 kids who were into Kiss, it was hard being the in that situation but I knew I was into something really good, and the other kids had not worked it out. At the same time I was also a huge DEVO fan, and in a funny way still love what they are getting up to. DEVO was and is way ahead of their time, it's a very clever band.

All I have to say is that when "SLASH" did the appetite for destruction album he used a fake gibson & it ended up sounding just as good as a real one in fact now Gibson makes gibson copies of a gibson copy lol. The truth is that it doesn't really matter what you use to play it's about the time & effort you put into your guitar whether it's real or fake. People wanna buy replicas let them what's the harm in it? It's not like anyone is gonna sell out shows & perform live on stage.
@PantheonLincoln

The thing is that the Slash guitar was a VERY expensive replica of a vintage guitar by a respected luthier, using materials and construction methods that were used back then. This is a cheap mass-produced guitar from a Chinese factory that has another company's branding on it. A world of difference.
@CarlosSantiago-oi6nj
@CarlosSantiago-oi6nj 10 жыл бұрын
No entirely true. Slash couldn't afford a good guitar at the time. And it didn't cost him anything it was given to him. When people buy these guitars and repair them to sound and look a certain way it's the same idea slash had in mind. He couldn't afford what he wanted so he made the best out of what he had. Same idea with Eddie Van Halen He couldn't afford a great guitar so he bought spare guitar parts and made the Frankenstein strat. It doesn't mean he doesn't deserve to play its the fact that when you can't afford something you make the best out of what you have. I honestly don't see a harm in it.
@CarlosSantiago-oi6nj
@CarlosSantiago-oi6nj 10 жыл бұрын
Now if people are on KZbin advertising a replica LES PAUL like it's the real thing and making $ off of it when it's not its a different story but people on KZbin are simply just showing how they can enjoy playing a replica at home to themselves and still rock out and have fun. There's no harm in that.
@CarlosSantiago-oi6nj
@CarlosSantiago-oi6nj 10 жыл бұрын
By the way slashes replica AFD guitar did not have another companies branding on it. It false advertised a real 1959 les Paul standard. it's the same idea.

Carlos,the thing you do not know and probably do not understand is slash was playing guitars that were about 5 levels ABOVE a Gibson made to his exact specification by a very exclusive Luther in Los Angles.they weren't Chinese copies,they were USA made 100% perfect Luther hand crafted guitars that only LOOKED like a les paul.this is the reason they are worth so much,are so impossible to find(the guitar maker died)and are so good. research the term "ghost guitar" 99% of true rock stars do not play gibsons,they play hand crafted guitars. you might want to look into what you are claiming to know,because research is key.

Love your vids dude. You mentioned you were blown away when you first learned these could be had and that's exactly where I am right NOW. I am just blown away actually. I just ordered a PRLess but with my own head stock name and really excited about it. Of course I would like the guitar to be perfect right out of the box but after watching a lot of videos on these I really doubt it will be. Though, to me it sounds like a fun project making it perfect with some new hardware, wiring, maybe fret dressing, whatever it needs... :) Thanks for all your vids dude and great playing. Very informative. Been keeping up on "bootleg" imports and wasn't surprised when these Chinese Les Pauls showed up a few years ago. With that said, and to avoid "knockoffs", I look for Gibson Les Pauls, V's, and Explorers that were built at the old Kalamazoo Michigan Gibson plant. Big fan of San Dimas made Jackson Rhoads guitars as well. Thanks and have a great day!

Same here, I think it rocks. I probably like Sonic Boom a little better, but I do like this release. The best Paul Stanley guitar is the PS1 by Ibanez, especially the one with the ebony fingerboard. It's miles above the standard Iceman and is considered a really nice guitar by any standard. The Washburn just struck me as a business deal, whereas the Stanley started with an Iceman, and then Ibanez made his custom model. That process seemed more organic than just licensing the Stanley name.

HA! The 1776 poster!! I TOTALLY had that one! Ok, now my new obsession is old KISS posters. lol And you're spot on with my age, I'm 46. I got "Beth" as a 45rpm single back in '76 and I was hooked. Then I got the single for Christine Sixteen the next summer and my parents bought me Alive II that Christmas. By '79, I owned every album and my walls were plastered with nothing but KISS posters. By '82, KISS was out of my life, dismissed as a "kid's band" and replaced by Zep, my new obsession.

Hey Steve, I missed the 70s KISS train by just a few years I think. I was born in late 71, and I didn't really get into rock until I was about 10. However, one of the "best" memories I have of KISS is walking through JC Penney's with my mom at probably around the age of 6 or 7, and seeing the solo albums on display. As my mom shopped, I kept walking back to the dislpay in awe of how cool they looked... but admittedly Gene freaked me out hahaha. :)

Also the bridges are metric so they have a flathead screw for adjustments and they have a scarf joint on the neck where the head stock is joined. Now that being said I have heard they are making them with standered bridges and no scarf joint. So they could be harded to tell with the newer ones....

They feel pretty much the same. The amber Standard has a very slim neck, so that felt a little different. But the rest of them are pretty much the same. If there are differences, they really weren't very noticeable, other than weight and general quality. So the real ones certainly feel more solid and better crafted, but I can't say the shape and feel of the neck is much different. I don't own any, but my buddy has a few and I've featured them on here.

I have a couple of Gibsons too and if I ever don't want them I can't sell them. I agree with you on that. I have a Black Les Paul Custom with P90s (because I hate humbuckers) and a Super 400 with two P90s. Both are excellent guitars. Funny no one KZbin care about Super 400s or Les Pauls with P90s, just Les Pauls with humbuckers or an occasional hollow body with humbucker. Oh well for each his own. But yes, I am stuck with two great guitars sense I can't sell them. Maybe I can drive south 2 hours to Tijuana and sell it to someone down there if I have to.

I like Cort guitars. They make some of the better Squier models for Fender (serial starts with IC, for Indonesian Cort) and I'm pretty sure they make the Kramer Classic models for Gibson. So while I don't own a Cort, per se, I own at least one - maybe two - guitars made by them for other manufacturers, and I really like them. So I'm sure they have their manufacturing processes down pat and their quality control, too. Thumbs up for Cort.

Exactly. It keeps the boredom down and the anxiety when it gets dented or scratched. Plus, it's the only solution for the ADD guitarist. lol The last fake I bought was a Stealth copy with an ebony fingerboard and matte finish. It was surprisingly nice for $174. The pickups suck so bad, though, I'll have to change them out before it makes an appearance in a video. And I'll probably change the bridge, too, as it's pretty weak. Keep rocking, Satch. also Steve, I was reading that the Gibson Ace Frehley signature series ( the first ones ) have pulled up in price. There is a wiki page about the signature series guitars and it seems Ace's one is very popular. If you have a early number you have a 9K guitar on your hands. Thanks for the review and all your advice. My biggest beef with these are when they stamp the back of the headstock with "Made in USA" and even include a fake serial number. If they would just be honest about that, it would sit a little better. That said, I'm a pretty poor guy these days and would love a high quality LP or SG copy like what you have. Even if I had $3000 to blow, I'm not dumping it on a Gibby. A custom shop Hamer or other brand would be more worthy, imo.

Hey Steve - speaking of Ibanez LP's, I still have a wine red bolt-on LP under the name "El Degas", bought up in Canada, circa late 70's/early 80's. But..MIJ, built at the Ibanez factory, then re-labeled for the Canadian market. Came with a SD in the bridge & a PAF in the neck, plus coil taps...*GREAT* guitar, so effortless to play. Narrow neck, pretty round fretboard radius, definitely not a shredder, but perfect for me as a riffage/rhythm player. Good times. Thanks for the memories!

I have a Felder '59 copy and it sounds great, just put a SD 59 in the neck and a SD jeff beck in the bridge. Things plays great and sounds insane.

These Chinese Les Paul look pretty good, but my next guitar is going to be the real deal. I am going to buy a 2014 Les Paul traditional, non weight relived. I just love the solid feel of the traditional, feels like it's a bit heavier in weight. Just feels good in my hands. No clone Gibson's for me. Get the real deal, it's worth it. The resale value alone makes it worth it. I'm a Canadian and I love American made guitars like Fender and Gibson. I don't think it's worth the risk of buying a Chibson made in China. It might be a faulty, they have really crappy micro-phonic pick-ups for one thing, and would probably have to change them out, along with machine heads and other parts. Just not worth it. The Chibson's have there place, just not in my place.

I've seen the same thing -- the bridge not placed correctly. Try to find a long-throw bridge, if possible. There are bridges out there that are wider than the standard Tune-o-matics, so you may be able to get it adjusted without re-drilling the face (which would be a mess).

Is the neck profile on those guitars as fat as an actual Les Paul custom? I used to have a custom copy from the '70s that was made by a company in Japan called Crown City International. You could always spot these because it would have a capital I over a capital C for the headstock logo. It was a bolt on neck, but the neck was really slim. I would say a little thicker at the nut like an Ibanez wizard II configuration. I regret letting that guitar go back in '86. Are the Chinese Les Paul custom and or Les Paul standard neck configuration close to the Gibson counterparts? Please tell me there are slimmer than Gibson? Gibsons have always been like a Louisville slugger for a neck profile. Especially for my hands. I have short fingers.

I just checked it and they are showing 24,000 guitars for sale. At the height, there were 120,000 guitars for sale. At the low point, there were about 6,000 guitars for sale. So it seems all over the place, but definitely down compared to 18 months ago.

I thought about a Black Beauty style, too. But I'm staying focused on the Ibanez guitars right now. I just think I play a little better on them because of the super slim neck.

Cheap Trick, didn't the guitarist from that band have a massive guitar collection..??, and seeing Kiss is 78 was the right time, maybe a 76 / 77 concert was the absolute prime time when they were super hungry for big success

Where do you find these Chinese Les Pauls? All the ones that I've seen don't have Gibson on the headstock or some other minor thing (that's not actually minor) that makes them different from an actual Gibson.

Alright mate? Do you think these could be shipped to England? Also, did they do these in the black "tuxedo" Les Paul custom? I'd love one but the epiphone ones have the horrible coil tapping. Cheers

Actually, adding lessons to the regular vlog stuff is on the agenda. I'm just figuring out where to start and how to organize it.

Beatlemania! Wow, I totally remember those guys. It shows how hard-up we all were for anything Beatle-related in the late 70s (you are talking about Beatlemania, right, the tribute band?) Kiss were (and still are) the masters of marketing. That's probably why the Hall of Fame is so reluctant to induct them, but they shouldn't forget all the great songs they wrote that have become a big part of the music world (and people's lives).

Nice! That's pretty much what I have, a Supreme, a Custom and two Standards. I haven't changed anything in them yet, but I'll probably get around to changing the hardware at some point.
