Pizza Pi Snorkel with Cruz Bay Watersports, USVI 4.22.2024 4k

2 snorkel stops - first at Christmas Cove at Great St. James island (between St John and St Thomas) with pizza lunch and then a 2nd stop adjacent to Caneel Bay. This was our 2nd outing with Cruz Bay Watersports and will not be our last! They provide an amazing day of snorkeling, food, and open bar.

We experienced significant rain and overcast skies nearly every day, this trip (and murky water clarity/color/contrast), but it’s never a bad time snorkeling around St. John, USVI. Everything was extra lush and green and island cisterns got an added boost of fresh water.
We ran into at least one of us having technical difficulties with our GoPros on nearly every snorkel (or debate over which ProTune settings to use - auto color is NEVER the answer, as it leads to wild color swings within a single clip. And both cameras need to be set to 16:9 and 4k. Most of the footage from the Hero 10 had to be cropped-in from 4:3 aspect ratio, so is no longer 4k/UHD) . Lesson learned is to check and double-check settings before entering the water (it’s easy to bump things on the touch-screen while exiting ProTune menus). Settings can’t be changed once cameras are secured inside dive housings. We also need to find better anti-fog strips for inside our housings, as fogging was also an issue in later footage most days.
Neither of us loved the 2-hand tray mount. It might be great for scuba, but not ideal for snorkeling without a lot of diving to get close to subjects. And it tends to make for more jittery footage, as well, since it’s more affected by any water movement at the surface. Next trip we’ll both have selfie sticks. Our quickpod™ Ultra is really great for underwater.
