they're so primitive. McPig had already gotten his animation style down pat (and kept it amazingly consistent through all these years of development) but was totally winging it on the level and game design aspects, only keeping it somewhat coherent by way of the Wario Land inspiration. Definitely learning as he went and getting more input from people as the impeccable style of his drawings got more people's attention. I guess that's the magic of Game Maker games where it's not too demanding for a newbie to throw something together like these pre-earlytestbuild1 levels and keep iterating on that. of course getting a dedicated programmer and a team of playtesters probably helps a lot too, but it all started right here.

I know you're just memeing but when you think about it, all this predated the SAGE demo which was this game's first big break. that basically formed how the game would develop for almost 3 years onward. if they stuck with this style of platforming, it probably wouldn't have been as successful and made all those years worth it, cus McPig didn't have a totally clear direction of where he wanted to go with the game aside from "it's like Wario Land crossed with a weird 90's cartoon" if there's anything "they" took from us it's all the development history on Discord.

Seeing the stuff before the Early Test Build just makes me upset I can't play it. I get it, it's so similar to Wario Land. I know. That's why I want to play it.
