One of the things I also find charming about the art style is it gives me strong vibes of 'cartoon drawn entirely in mspaint' which for some reason makes it seem 20 times more chaotic.

Pizza Tower has easily joined Dusk, Cultic, Ultrakill, and Signalis as a prime example of building on the tropes and mechanics of your inspirations. And all four don't feel like shallow throwbacks. They ride on their art style, trope deviation, and sincerity. The love Pizza Tower has for Wario and Sonic are so clearly present but it's a whole different beast, and will join the pantheon of Platformers in time. Also, their soundtracks slap hard. Pizza Tower being my favorite of the four. It sounds so diasporic but it feels at home in the wackshit world like Peppino's personal anthem.

the way the animations, sound, and peppino's manic/anxious nature really sell the *idea* of speed is amazing. I may have played games that go faster than Pizza Tower but I haven't played any that have felt as fast as Pizza Tower

My favorite thing about this game is how much faster he is, with the wider screen it unintentionally became a really good sonic-like. It’s great this became its own thing. This game is lovely and it deserves the love everyone’s been giving it.

one thing that will keep this game alive is prob the p rank speedrun.. for that you need to beat each level atleast twice (one for unlocking the lap 2 and the second run is for the p rank) for anyone asking what the p rank is its the perfect rank wich task you to beat the entire level and its lap 2 collect every topin collect the treasure and find all 3 secrets *in one go while maintaining your sole combo*

Cartoon nothing. This is animation on speed! Got the pencil outlines of Ed, Edd, n Eddy, the manic nature of Ren & Stimpy, facial features of Cow & Chicken, everything about this game speaks mid 90s to early 2000s Cartoon Network and NickToons. Game really respects the Wario predecessors. Glad I got this game, and was willing to pay full price.

If I may, I wanna pitch a game suggestion. For anyone who likes the high speed nature of this game, I recommend giving Freedom Planet a try. Espeically Freedom Planet 2! They lean much heavier into the Sonic side of things (hell they started as a Sonic fangame), but turned into it's own thing.

3:21-3:26 Sorry to nitpick your otherwise excellent video, but Cuphead actually owes more to Fleischer Studios, who made the Betty Boop and Popeye cartoons, then it does Tex Avery and Chuck Jones, both of whom worked for Warner Bros. (except Avery, who left for MGM) People often seem unaware of this, but if you look at some of the Fleischer cartoons and compare them directly to Cuphead, the direct inspiration is clear.

As a massive Wario fan, I unfortunately really didn't enjoy Pizza Tower, I may be the only one. The main problem for me is the expectation. Treasures in Wario games were usually hidden behind (admittedly simple most of the time) puzzles, smart thinking and exploration was encouraged. Pizza Tower has its toppings in plain sight almost all of the time and the secrets are just a case of looking carefully, something you'll likely do on your first run naturally, I think I only missed 4 the first run through. It makes sense of course, because the focus of the game is on speedrunning, gotta go fast and all that. Since you get ranked after each level, the assumption I make is that the perfect rank is the optimal way to play and there lies my issue. I don't enjoy that struggle, at all, but every time I finished a level I was reminded "no, you're doing it wrong" I can see how the game is great, but it just stressed me out.

I got a few P ranks before I just quit, speedrunning has never been the reason I play Wario or "Wario-likes" and I just felt like Pizza Tower focused too much of its gameplay to support that is all. It shares more in common with Sonic than Wario, at least when played the way its seemingly intended. It tries to have both its pizza and eat it too. There's been so many indie platformers focused on speedrunning that maybe I'm just burnt out on that style of repetition, I do play a lot more than I imagine most people do.

Different styles of gameplay and feedback motivate people differently, or even the same person at different times. Speed running for ranks is more interesting for me once mastery sets in and unexplored space shrinks. I like to play through at my own pace 1st run, then challenge myself on 2nd runs. I can't recall the game offhand, but a feature I've seen that would likely help here is to only start showing ranks after a player naturally scores high, hiding them entirely below a given rank. This changes the perception on baseline performance and the gap for optimal performance without demotivating explorative play. I really appreciated that approach. Having the option to deemphasize or hide the fanfare for ranking at the end would be great too. These options would benefit both styles of play.
