A "professor" hits Dr. Christian's town, promising the local women dramatic weight loss in a very short time if they follow his regimen of strict diet and a particular type of diet pill. Dr. Christian tries to warn them that the man is a dangerous charlatan but, mesmerized by the prospect of almost instantaneous weight loss, the women ignore his warnings.

What a grand movie! Dr. Christian, a man of discernment, commonsense and 100% commitment to the patient. First do no harm. There is a warning within this movie that is very relevant to today.

I truly enjoy Dr. Christian films . They're quite wonderful . Jean Hersholt was a wonderful actor , even when he played Shirley Temple's grandfather - Heidi . May Mr. Hersholt and many of the stats back then RIP . 🌻🌹🌷🌼🌺💐

There was entirely too much nervous giggling from all the ladies. What a relief when they sobered up. I'm grateful there's a Dr. Christian series and I loved Hersholt in the Shirley Temple movie HEIDI.

Although these were possibly considered "low budget" films, my word but the acting is fine , not wooden , not amateur but fine .Great characters in the series.

It's true that we want to be thin like the models, to bad there's no magic pill. It takes lots of work and dedication, planning etc. Our goal is to be healthy and have lots of energy to do our daily work. Thank you

Thank you for sharing this nice old movie! By the way, - it was made 1940, - before WWII started; just 5 years after that, when the war had ended, women in many countries were malnourished due to the scarcity of food. And, of course, some crooks tried to prey on them, advertising some "miracle yeast, which helps you to gain 10 pounds a month!" Commercials of that "miracle" were very nasty & body-shaming: "Men run away from you, because you are too skinny? Eat our miracle yeast to gain weight quickly!" - with a picture of a slim girl, and two men, literally running away from her!

It's almost unbelievable. During the good old days, you could actually telephone a doctor and ask(!) him to come over to your house to examine a patient! Those days are long gone! Nowadays you have to make an appointment and wait for hours in a clinic just to see a doctor. Will the doctor make house calls? You must be dreaming.

I wish I could find more movies like the Dr. Christian series. This was very well done and not really any holes in teh story either. To see how callouses the Professor was and how those entangled in a lie get angry when confronted with the truth made it all that much more immersive and believable. ns wow did that young lady ever look ill. It makes me wonder if she really had to stay up a couple of night without sleep to look the part. Dr. Christian was looking a little rough near the end as well. When Bill is surprised at all Dr. Christian does for his community Dr. Christian says "We all have a lot to do" and Bill says, "Like building up instead of tearing down?" it captured the whole essence of this series. This is what life is really about.

Wow, really? Building up instead of tearing down. I love old movies, but your comment here convinced me I needed to watch this one. It sounds like a nice contrast to current times, a reminder that we are capable of being so much better. Thanks for the insight.

And to think that this conversation at the dinner table with the Professor and Dr. Christian has been cruising around dinner tables since 1940 and we are still no closer to effecting a generalized change in dietary habits or restrictions. Hm-hmmmm. Leptins, insulin resistance, gut leakage, dopamine addiction.- it's all too complicated, too uncertain. Anyone for another chocolate Eclair? A steak burger? Ice cream? Chips? It's all healthy......(?). Everything is poisonous; just depends on the amount and how often you are exposed to it.

"You can't come down from newspaper work." Nowadays that means tv news. The dinner at 14 minutes reminds me of Al Yankovic's song "Eat It". Imagine that, people then were slim compared to those of today. Good movie until the ridiculous melodramatic and unbelievable end.

I've love how the town's folk restrict their diet and do some modest exercise for a couple of days running and they all become dangerously ill. Middle class fears at their worst! The exercise scene certainly dispels the myth that women weren't fat back in the good old days. Everyone of those ladies was clinically obese.

Heavy handed propaganda film series promoting the 'benevolence' of AMA style doctors and medical practices. Much like the 'Crime Doctor' series but not as entertaining.
