A cunning psychopath is the subject of the greatest manhunt in LAPD history! The semi-documentary style of this film inspired co-star Jack Webb to create his iconic TV series Dragnet.

I saw a familiar face on a street in Dublin, Ireland back in 1971 and asked him if he had been in cowboy pictures. He stretched out his hand and said, "Scott Brady". That's when I learned his name. Ever since I enjoyed seeing him in any old movie. He was as nice as could be and a good actor.

I love hearing and seeing old LA prior to its now run down crime ridden self. I have only heard Watts twice in fifty years. I remember the Watts riots. Which many people never heard about. Loved the old bungalows and courts before being torn down for cookie cutter track homes. And of course. The milk delivery. Helms bakery trucks and ice cream trucks. Times sure have changed. Seeing Jack Webb prior to Adam 12 is wonderful. Frank Caddy. Mr Drucker ! Always a treat.. Great movie ...Made my day...😊

Yes , I marvel at the engineering of the amazing flood control that was set up on So Cal . I lived in Rosemead in the 1950s. We had a cement clad canal (wash) behind our house. Wide enough that a car can drive on it. Until saw this movie I no idea how large and extensive these underground drain tunnels are.

@@monicaclark9581 Lol. My grandparents had a wash behind their home too. They lived in San Gabriel and we were in Rosemead. We would marvel at the wash during heavy rain. The school I went to was on Wells. And named " Wells School " but was changed to Emma Shuey after the principal. Not sure if its still called that. I never hear of Rosemead ! Its wonderful to know someone else knows the area ... 😁👋 Hi! Thank You for sharing. Brought back many fond memories.. 🌹

This movie directly inspired Dragnet. It was Los Angeles Police Sgt. Martin Wynn, one of the technical advisers on this film, that suggested to Jack Webb the idea of a weekly radio show dramatising the cases of the LAPD formatted in same semi-documentary style as this movie.

I wish we still dressed and lived with gender defined roles like we did then. Must have been nice. Not to mention keeping up appearances was the mainstay. Now we live in a self obsessed, gender confused, triggered by the slightest, godless way now. Where men and woman have contempt for one another, instead of admiration. We had a good run.

A smart little procedural with excellent photography and some surprisingly shocking detail. The shot when Roy is first running along the sewers is outstanding. Great cast. Full of fine details (the captain sucking on an unlit pipe; the cop with no matches who's waiting for the flash of inspiration). Minimal score heightens the tension and keeps things down to earth, rendering the violence more sudden and shocking. Splendid use of lenses to fill the frame, or add depth of field. Imaginative use of the frame for composition. Subtle set design further adds to the overall effect. Tremendous stuff. The final ringing gun shot provides the film with its own applause.

But what was the motivation for his life of crime and murder 🤔 From the film, we get he serves in WW2 and was presumedly honorably discharged ( he was offered his old police job after the war) and before the war worked as a civilian radio tech for the LAPD. So what caused his to go rogue and start stealing stuff and killing people...something happen during the war? Nothing is explained to give him a back story and fill out the main character. Otherwise, a great film and Basehart does a psycho killer very well.
