The Mercury Prize is awarded for musical artistry, not popularity, not quality of voice. PJ Harvey is an artist, not just a singer. I haven't heard this album but know from her back catalogue that she is a diverse and musically interesting performer... unlike Adele, who can sing very well but has brought nothing new to the table. Good on the Mercury lot for continuing to champion intelligence and artistry.

I get what you're saying but PJ sings actually better than Adele
@ralphtijtgat3233 Жыл бұрын
Yeah, PJ is an artist. Her stuff isn't exactly easily digested, and she doesn't care. She just does her own thing and hey, maybe there's something in there for you. Or not. But it's always interesting. And even if it's not for you, there's still the excellent technique. She has a great voice and she uses it in, um, an unpredictable fashion?
One of the most important albums of the last50 years, incredible

Legend....I won't get involved in past comments. She has the balls of Dave Groll, the inventiveness and diversity of Neil Young, the political awareness of Billy Bragg and is the most literate songwriter since Morrissey....And if you don't like it then you can either listen to something else, write your own stuff or shut the fuck up. Cheers

England was on it's knees waiting for America to step in & help during the 2nd world war. These overtones are translated in the song & in the introductions. Much of the songs are not easy to listen to on this album, but resonate suitably.

“England” I think you will find that it’ was Britain not England. Furthermore I don’t know what history books you have been reading, but clearly you will find that it was the USSR, not the USA that made the difference. By the time the USA entered the war, the tide against the Axis powers had turned against them.

The west's asleep, let England shake Weighted down with silent dead I fear our blood won't rise again Won't rise again England's dancing days are done Another day, Bobby, for you to come Home and tell me indifference Is won, won, won Smile, smile Bobby, with your lovely mouth Pack up your troubles and let's head out To the fountain of death and splash about Swim back, forth, back, back, laugh out loud Until the day is ending And the birds are silent And the insects are courting And by the shores, heavy stones are falling Smile, smile Bobby, with your lovely mouth Pack up your troubles and let's head out To the fountain of death and splash about Swim back, forth, back, back, laugh out loud

@TehRoobz I love Adele as well but I think that PJ Harvey's CD is far superior, more nuanced and pure. I was a bit surprised that Adele was even nominated. She's a lovely singer but her songs without that wonderful, expressive voice would not stand up nearly as well as they do in their current incarnation.

Hahahaha i love reading comments on this video such as "i though she was some cool upcoming new artist" or "she's a wannabe"... Go get musically educated, PJ's a true artist, just try listening to "Good Fortune" and you'll see you probably knew it and liked it but didn't know it was hers. I love Adele, i was listening to 21 about an hour ago, but she's nothing new... I can see PJ as the next Patti Smith, playing on for ages till she dies and always coming up with good stuff

one word: Boris De Pfeffel Johnson. every empire goes down. every empire. under the weight of their own karma. but there is no need for the civilians of such empires to feel any guilt. its the thread of establishment that would sell missiles to murderous regimes who should quake in their very boots. karma comes a callin'

the reason why england shakes is because unlike germany it does not acknowledge the true depths of its crimes. it pretends like usa to be only the good guys, they are both delusional in this regard and precisely why they are now both led by complete narcissistic idiots. you may deny it, but it is still true. as they say. god will not be mocked.

@Grange34 I wasn't actually slagging Adele off,(unlike the guy above that called her a fat slut!). I just said that I didn't think her music is particularly new or interesting .
