The whole album is amazing. Some singers burn out, fade away after a few years - but she's getting stronger. To take on WWI like this, paint these pictures. I've been in tears a few times listening...

I watched the movie Michael Caine movie "Zulu" this morning, and this album came to my mind immediately - especially this song. I'm Australian and I love England - I believe there is an inner connection for us with the old country - being convicts and all - and yet, you can not help but ask the question why? And its not because I want to diss England, Australia has as much guilt. This album has done what great art does, promote discussion and debate ... and the conclusion, no one wins in war.

PJ Harvey is a pure musical genius. The UK scene is still alive thanks to Polly and a few other artists putting out music with integrity and substance. PJ HARVEY, RADIOHEAD, MASSIVE ATTACK, TRICKY, PORTISHEAD, THE XX, BRIAN ENO, AMON TOBIN, GARY NUMAN, SCROOBIUS PIP, UNKLE, ALLFLAWS

honestly i think the seamus films correlate perfectly with pj's vision. i mean when you hear pj speak about the album she often repeats how simplistic the underlying feel is in the music. so these films represent that sort of mundane sensibility. and given that the music is about conflict and war,it's like they romanticise that mundane, every day life.

This wonderful song is as chilling as the great essay by James Boswell, "On War". It's unfortunate some of our greatest art, whether song or essay, is inspired by the most horrific nature of man.

The bugle in this is called 'the assembly' and was used to call together a group of soldiers. The fact that it is deliberately used out of time and out of key in this song adds to the poignancy of the lyrics.

Yes, PJ Harvey is a pure musical genius. She is what Burroughs has been for writing. A blessing. (Fuck The Guardian reviewer which stated that the out of tune trumpet reveille sound ruins the song. When she was almost choking at the end of Working For The Man, nobody had something to say about it.) This song is great, as the rest of the album. And to fluffycake1: you have all of my respect for your taste in music.

@hippotoast well I suppose I just comprehend art in a different manner, that an artist's use of intensely personal matters, places or evocative scenes is meant to transcend the described incident and harken to amore unievrsal or at least more macro comprehension and sense of life, ie london could stand in for any capital city, a river's beauty or role in commerce conjures others... enjoy it to the max though and, as the sex pistols put it, god save the queen!

love this song its so amazing... the video as a whole however :-( there are some gorgeous images in it but as a whole, it doesnt do the song justice. Gorgeous images from 2: 48 to 3 :09.. if there were more of these rich images through out the video then it would be just as stunning as the song!

@hippotoast alas, the lyrics apply all too well to both (all) imperial countries and indeed comparing them, as prime minister blair was of recent times referred to as GW Bush the Second's puppy. See Brit George Michael's vid for "Shoot The Dog". claiming some sort of special britishness is exactly the sort of deranged nationalism she is exposing, revealing and ultimately denouncing. great song though, do agree indeed!

i love this album so much but damn, these videos are really lacking. for me they are either just plain boring or they take away from the songs imagery instead of enhancing the music. i do love some moments here and there though.. especially in the words that maketh murder video

@hippotoast Also, as far as the level of impact you say for an "Englishman"? What about females? or only men you are saying? That would be very odd given her very feminist inclinations from past. Such assertions are rife with perplexing moments.

The only problem I have with this song and some of the others on this album is the idea of seemingly blaming the conflict in Afghanistan on the US and UK exclusively. If one wanted to blame the conflict in Afghanistan on just one party that party would be the Taliban, but one could also find justification in also blaming al Qaeda, Pakistan, Russia, et cetera...warlords, jihadists, opium drug lords, religious fanatics, terrorists. The truth is that since the fall of the Taliban the US/England/NATO have been on the same side of the conflict as Afghanistan, helping Afghanistan to defend itself against the Taliban who are trying to reconquer the country.

@Abel Ashes I think your reading here is much too narrow. This song (and album) is not just about Afghanistan/Iraq, but about the sins of war and Empire in general. America, Britain and much of Europe was built upon exploitation in the Middle East, South America, Africa, Southeast Asia, and on and on. But if you want to get specific, the Taliban are basically illiterate shepards and herders living as they have since the Bronze Age. While backwards, they posed no direct threat to the West. Their only misdeed was turning a blind eye to al Qaeda camps. And opium production skyrocketed after the war because there was NO OTHER crop/means of living available to the Afghani people. Grow opium, or watch your family starve. Which would you choose? What's more, the Taliban warlords - while certainly no saints - are a product of Western intervention, first from Russia then the US in the 80's, then in 2000's. Ben Laden was trained by the CIA to fight Russians in Afghanistan, then he turned on them the CIA/US with 9/11. (Empire building has a way of coming back to bite you on the ass.)
