PJ Reggae is an eight-piece reggae band hailing from Ti Tree, Northern Territory, 200km from Alice Springs. They write and perform smooth reggae rhythms and uplifting songs about country and relationships with lyrics in Warlpiri, Anmatjere and English.
PJ stands for Pmara Jutunta, which means ‘old place’ in Anmatjere language. Pmara Jutunta is where previous generations came from but relocated due to lack of water resources. The place holds special meaning for the community.
PJ Reggae was formed in 2022 and draws inspiration from Central Desert Band. They are fans of their fellow Central Australia bands including Eastern Reggae, Laramba Band, New Boys, MB Reggae, Desert Wind and Eastern Arrernte Band.
Comprised of two keyboard players, bass, rhythm guitar, acoustic guitar and two vocalists - with flexibility to change things up from time to time - PJ Reggae started playing remote community shows and made their festival debut at Barkly Regional Arts’ Desert Harmony Festival. Being selected for MusicNT’s prestigious Bush Bands Bash and Business Summit is a strong indicator of the band’s potential.
Practice space for the band meant either using the community hall or basketball court - neither of which has very good acoustics. So, the band members built rehearsal and performance space with a stage and sound fit-to-purpose that is accessible to other local musicians. The PA and equipment was provided by the Community Development land council.
PJ Reggae’s debut album is set to be released on digital streaming services following Bush Bands.
