Sometimes supervisors put pressure on workers to do illegal things. Sometimes workers do them on their own accord. That Forklift driver would learn the hard way if he hits a car or injures someone whilst on a public road. He'll be left high and dry.

i remember having the conversation at a builders merchants a few year ago when all the lifters had number plates fitted as they went in & out of the yard onto the road. I happened to mention if that applied you're drivinga vehicle with 4 bald tyres.... 12pts there. The lad said he'd not thought of that he'd better ask the management. What if it’s only being used for a short distance? It’s wrong to assume that you won’t require any of the above if you’re only travelling a short distance, or you’re simply crossing a road on a regular basis. When travelling less than 1000 yards, it not be classed as a work truck and therefore will only require more standard licensing and registration, based on few criteria, including: The weight of the forklift. How it is propelled. If the total weight of the truck, which includes its load, exceeds 3500kg, then it will be classed as a HGV. If it comes it at a weight under 3500kg, it will be classed as a light goods vehicle. Also, you need to make sure that it complies with the Road Vehicles Regulations, which may require you to apply certain modifications to the truck. If you’re operating an electric-powered forklift then it will need to be taxed under the electric vehicle tax.

We also have different registration numbers on our trailers here in Australia PJ. Not the brightest of ideas as it doesn't identify the tractor unit or the driver. As that trailer was being pulled by a UK registered tractor unit, you are correct. It should have displayed the registration number of the tractor unit which is exactly what I had to do when picking up EU trailers from Hull docks many years ago.

Can’t say I’d blame them either as it’s a working environment and there’s enough silly red tape rules to deal with without adding more. Trailers from Europe have there own number plate Pete just like any other vehicle, that number is registered to that trailer but he should also have a UK Reg plate of his own vehicle on the back too, £50 fine that off VOSA , but DSV are a law unto them self's until they get caught or the shit hits the fan .

The fine for failing to display appropriate number plates on a vehicle was increased some years back to £100 for a fixed penalty notice or up to £1000 in court (but that’s rare). It’s a non endorsable offence but there was a consultation last year regarding changing the law to include penalty points but I have no idea of the outcome.

3:18 Not sure about the UK but a trailer is (in the Netherlands) considered its own vehicle and as a result needs it's own vehicle registration and numberplate. (there are trailers exempt from this but they would go behind cars only and would have a GVW of 750kg or less. In these cases the numberplate put on the trailer would be - at least in the Netherlands - a black on white version of the license plate fitted on the car/van.) Changing out the numberplate would be illegal Unless you wanted to re-register in another country which is obviously highly time consuming, costly and thus impractical. As far as I am aware any tractor with whatever registration (nationality-wise) can legally pull any trailer regardless of it's registration...

You will do, that is where a foreign trailer is being pulled by a UK wagon, it will have 2 plates on it, o e from the country of origin, and one that's the same as the tractor unit, that's fine. But this vehicle didn't have a UK plate on the back and it should have

The trailer is dropped at the port and a Dutch driver picks it up, it has to do with the hours that truck drivers are permitted to do each day. I have seen trucks with French, Irish, Belgian, number plates.
