The artwork and lil blurbs or favour texts are so cool ! I know next to nothing about mtg and the cards are still so cool individually!

wow the art on that wizard losing his sanity, the bookworm old man, and the guy bursting with ideas is absolutely astonishing. i kinda low key want to gather a full deck of these old and likely completely incompetitive by modern standards cards. msybe i'll lose every single game, but the opponents will never forget the beauty of the artwork and my immaculate taste will be sung into eternity 😇

You could start with the online version, but I recommend going into your local games shop (usually comic stores also have a hobby shop section, if you don't have a TTRPG / TCG focused shop) and seeing if they do game nights where you could possibly learn. A lot of times the workers there are super helpful in pointing you in the right direction of what to buy for beginners, or they do sell intro decks as well. Enter The Battlefield is also a good Magic focused documentary, and The Lorebrarians on youtube also has a 2hr video summarizing the games history, as well as the official Magic youtube page has videos simplifying learning how to play! Good luck and I hope you enjoy it if you do get into it!

from my experience, (though brought in through someone else's obsession): if you want to get into playing the cards 1. you can play online first (MTG Arena). runs you through basic play (although in standard, there's other modes too), gives you a look at the colours and how they play, how a deck works together and what important keywords tell you to do. 2. if you're hooked, find a pre contructed deck is my next idea. most of them will tell you how they play, you know you have card synergy (working together) and everything you need. 2.5 alternatively, go to a card shop and ask if they have maybe decks to try, most magic players have HEAPS of decks and i've found to be super forgiving of new players for taking a while and explaining. 3. go to a card shop, particularly for a social tournament if you can. if a tournament is competitive, and you're not a prodigy, good luck because people bring ridiculously powered decks. social events are more relaxed and everyone's happy to scale down. if you see cards you like, i used to take pictures of them! 4. now maybe consider buying packs. i play commander, which is one legendary that the rest of the deck is built around, but if you find an effect you really like, research is your friend! (4.5 there's websites to help with how many mana/land cards should be in a deck, what goes well with other cards, and all sorts. 5. try your hand at deck building/modding your preconstructed deck, and have a go with saving "good" (read: cards worth $$) that you don't like to trade with others! (also feel free to, after getting to know people, ask if they have any bulk to unload) 6. repeat - deck build, play, trade, wherever your heart wants to go! enjoy the social aspect and don't be afraid to ask for help! (additional tip- there's apps where you can scan cards with your camera and add it to your deck/wishlist and it keeps up to date prices on hand - super useful tool!!) i'm less knowledgable about lore, but here's my advice. look at sets (cards released at same time) or planes (of existence) online. find one you like and look for youtube vids, articles or card descriptions, learn from there out! i figure it's easier to start with the lore of one thing as opposed to it all (dinosaurs, vampires, elves, machines, you name it, there's probably a plane for it) hope this helps!!

Start going to your local card shops and see if they host weekly events or drafts/ pre release events! I was fortunate enough to get into it in highschool because I had friends that played it but, even now it's so easy to get into even if nobody you know plays. MTG arena is also a pretty good way to get into the game, I don't think you have to buy any cards? And it walks you through everything :D

These videos brought me back to my magic phase and I'm saving some extra spending money to buy cards. For now, I'm playing mtg arena to fill the void.
