That looks super fun, those shells are giant. The clam burger looked so tasty, a nice cold brew to enjoy it with and celebrate the moment is a must.😆👍🍻

I got sick from clams 50 years ago Haven't eaten them since not even clam soup. Loved the taste of them, but got sick. Looking back, it might have been demonic acid and from this video, I think I try them again. That clam burger looked very nice. Thanks great video. PS I might try clam soup first though.

Another great video PK! Interesting way to cook the gapers. We quit catching them because they were always too chewy. Also and easy way to catch cockles if u want to try something different is walking around in eel grass and feeling for them under your feet. I made a video of that a few months back. Thanks for sharing!
@ShutUpAndPlayIt3 жыл бұрын
if its too chewy that means you overcooked them, they cook really quickly and when cooked right they are not chewy.

HI PK LOVE YOUR CHANNEL YOU INSPIRE US ALL . I AM HEADING OVER TO TRY AND DO SOME FISHING CRABBING AND CLAMMING THIS FIRST WEEK OF NOVEMBER,FOR THE FIRST TIME EVER. THRU ONE OF YOUR VIDEOS I THINK I MAY FIRST STOP IN NETARTS TO DO CRABBING WITH BIG SPRUCE RV PARK AS YOU RECOMMENDED. BUT SOME IMPORTANT QUESTIONS PLEASE, WOULD BE OF GREAT HELP FOR ME TO HAVE WHAT I NEED ON THIS TRIP. #1 WHAT FISHING ROD OR REAL DO YOU RECOMMEND, I CAN BUY TO CATCH ANY KIND OF FISH FROM THE PIER,THE BEACH ??????(I CAN ONLY BUY ONE). CAN I ALSO USE IT TO CATCH CRAB OFF A PIER WITH IT TOO? #2WHERE DO YOU RECOMMEND I CAN GO FISHING OFF A PIER AND A BEACH THAT HAS EASY ACCESS TO FISHING? AS I CANT WALK TOO MUCH.AND WHAT KIND OF BAIT TO FISH. #3ALSO WHAT GOOD TASTING RESTAURANT DO YOU RECOMMEND FOR GOOD LOCAL FISH,CLAMS AND CRAB? #4LAST QUESTION . WHAT CENTRALLY LOCATED CITY CAN YOU RECOMMEND I CAN STAY IN TO BE CLOSE TO ALL THE FISHING,CLAMMING AND CRABBING?(MY FIRST TIME GOING TO OREGON) PK I REALLY APPRECIATE YOUR TIME. THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR THE ANSWERS TO THESE QUESTIONS. HOPE I CAN MEET YOU ONE DAY . GOD BLESS YOU AND YOUR FAMILY.

1) The Okuma Celilo salmon rod, 9'6" light action would be good for surf fishing. This rod is too light for crabbing. Surf perch might be hard to catch from a pier though... 2) Winchester Bay is a good pier for crabbing and fishing. You can also try siletz bay for crabbing from shore - with a crab hawk (but you need a heavy rod for it) 3) Chowder Bowl - my favorite seafood restaurant on the Oregon coast by a long shot 4) Newport. It has a crab dock (now is a good time to crab!), and you can easily catch rockfish off the south jetty at night. Good luck and be safe.

I used to use one of the wide rakes like you are using. Try one of the narrower four tine rakes. It is easier to pull through the sand and you can find clams a bit deeper since the tines are longer.
@oregonlife5 жыл бұрын
If I get a hold of one of those 4 tines rake, I'll have to try it out next time.

I prefer the butter/steamers/Manila. Cockles are more of a meaty clam for a chowder in my opinion. But hey, different strokes for different folks. What are your preferred?
@RatdogDRB5 жыл бұрын
Ok, so the foot/neck makes for a great clam sammich, how is the rest of the Gaper clam used? In a chowder? Good stuff there.
@oregonlife5 жыл бұрын
I've tried several different ways to cook them, but chowder is definitely the best way.

Dumb question but are those clams stuck? How do they get around when they are stuck under the sand like that?
@PhonePhone-bz2ql3 жыл бұрын
You don't have to be in water to rake out cockles, I have raked up many in sand, wet sand, of course.

Florence is not bad for surf fishing. You can try Driftwood shores, I've done OK there. For clamming, never tried it there. But I've seen people dig for clams on the HWY 126 bridge by the casino. good luck.

At 13:10 minutes of your video, you identified the three large Gaper clams as butter clams. Those are not Butter clams. Those are called Gaper Clams, Horseneck clams, Empire Clams or Blue clams. Butter clams and also called Martha Washington clams are a total different species. You made some really good videos. I would be nice if you could give the location of where you are digging clams.
