Placebo frontman Brian Molko poses as a tortured chauvinist on “Slackerbitch” (1996). In 1997, he said the lyrics are “quite horrible… an exploration into someone’s misogyny. This man in the song feels very threatened by women, but at the same time, it’s very heartfelt. It’s angry and nasty and insulting and completely politically incorrect. I’m not afraid to say I’ve felt some of those things. It walks a very fine line, and it’s dangerous.” Before it was released, the band played the tune to several women to gauge their reaction on its misogynistic tone, but the only people who found it offensive were men. Molko explained : “I think the point a lot of people would miss is that you’re not supposed to like the guy in the song. He’s a fool.” Despite receiving positive feedback from female listeners, Placebo decided to leave the track off the 1996 LP “Placebo” and to release it as the B-side to their breakthrough single “Nancy Boy” (1996). However, it was included on the 2006 reissue of “Placebo.” 💚🎶💙

every now and again, i come back here and am hit with an immediate sense of betrayal 😔 i would pay good money to get this back on spotify. like this is genuinely my favourite placebo song, and as a woman i think the people saying it’s misogynistic and needs to be cancelled miss the point entirely. you’re not supposed to think that the narrator is the good guy!! ffs, censorship has gone too far. as an artist, i’m so saddened to be witnessing the death of media literacy 😔 i’ve had my own art criticised for portraying unhealthy relationships and have been attacked by people without the common sense to realise that just because you write something about a taboo topic doesn’t mean that you support your characters’ behaviour. same case here, i fear.
