Actually, you can still get the ultra thrusters. Its still obtainable in the toxic waste stage, but all that changed is there is no chest in the menu to track your progress. :)

I think the reason why u took no dmg when u were on the water is because u went on a rock wich ate your leg and then sense you had no legs you were basically walking on the cake.
