Negative Space captures youth, with the help of the literature by D. Cooper, in a fascinating way. Is one of the most haunting books ive ever read. Theres the lure of all of youths abuses and modern pitfalls. The themes are striking. I agree with you that its a great horror novel. Stay well Juan. Youre a great person.

I agree. I think it’s one of the few true “young adult” fiction books that really get at the core of what youth is like. Of course, YA classifications would never accept it as such, and maybe that’s for the best.

Yeah I liked the read. My friend wanted a one sentence review of it and I said imagine stranger things but less fake and cheesy, with a narrative that makes you feel like you’re in the characters body.

Having just finished reading Negative Space 5 minutes ago, by god that was incredible. I love how you described it as a seductive void, the bleakness of it is saturated into every page. And good god that ending! Definitely gonna be thinking about this one for a while, gotta check out B.R. Yeager’s other works, plus other Apocalypse Party books. Color me sold! Edit: Also love how prevalent fate is as a theme. No matter how hard the characters try to escape, they keep getting pulled back in one way or another. Very terrifying

Negative Space was a bop. Yeager has such a strong, menacing voice. "A seductive void" is a perfect description.

Agreed! He’s one of the few authors I’ve read to truly face up to contemporary horrors so unflinchingly.

Fabulous list, you have me intrigued. I've only read one of these, Negative Space, and I admit that parts of it were over my head (or I just didn't "get it"), but it was compelling nonetheless.
@PlaguedbyVisions2 жыл бұрын
Yeah, I hear you! It’s definitely subject matter and execution that’s not going to resonate with everyone, but I’m glad you were still able to see how compelling and original it is!

I've never really come across high quality flash fiction, I'll have to look into this! Negative space has been on my tbr for a while, I really liked Amygdalatropolis by him.
@PlaguedbyVisions2 жыл бұрын
I’d never given it a try, but if you go into it knowing it’s more confessional rather than trying to tell a more conventional story, I think you’ll enjoy it! I can’t wait to see what Yeager does next!

I just finished terminal park on vacation and i really enjoyed it. I can see why it's a tough proposition though, its a very meta commentary on meta-commentaries. The work within a work within a work stuff is a challenge to tease out for sure but i found the writing very arresting and i was genuinely curious how the main and secondary narratives would work themselves out.
@PlaguedbyVisions2 жыл бұрын
I can agree on that! It’s a dense text, but it doesn’t eschew intrigue and fascination. That’s what I enjoyed most about it. I didn’t understand most of it, but the prose was alive with something intense and flailing.

It will have to wait since their books are (understandably so) very expensive and I do not have much disposable income.

@@PlaguedbyVisions I've only bought a couple of Amphet-etc's cheaper small items. One writer I'm curious about is that Audrey Szasz. I just wonder if she's worth all the buzz. Thanks for alerting me to Eugene Thacker. Had never heard of him. I'm anti-civilization and anti-intellectual and he fits with that somewhat. Ever read Russell Means' "For America to Live Europe Must Die"? That's an anti-civilization thing from a Native American perspective. Here's some poetry for you: "Thoughts that do often lie too deep for tears". Wordsworth.

You might enjoy "The Moon Down to Earth" by James Nulick from Expat press. I read somewhere that Yeager and Nulick were in communication while they were writing their respective books and they do have a similar vibe to them, although Moon doesn't have any horror or genre elements. These two books were my favorites from last year.
@PlaguedbyVisions2 жыл бұрын
I do love Expat Press as well! I believe that’s where Bonding was first published. That connection to Yeager is enough to pique my interest, horror elements aside. Thank you for the recommendation!

No Tiger by Mika is a compilation of some of her works. "Flashland" and "the Flak Wolves perish on the first sunset of winter" are absolute standouts in a compilation of amazing works. Mika herself is also an amazing person. Highest recommendation to read her book.

Ah, another rec! Thank you! Yeah, being unsure if something’s horror, but knowing it’s fucked up, is usually the stuff I like. 😁
