In this weeks video i wood turn a large sycamore bowl blank measuring 11" x 4" keeping things as natural as possible. I think this piece has some fantastic coloration and patterns running through it. Let me know what you think?

Beautiful bowl! I'm very new to turning, so forgive my ignorance, why did you make a point of saying that you didn't use carbide tools?

Thanks Gareth! No main point really mate , I'm just trying to learn how to use all the traditional tools now, so want to try and do full turns without any carbides. Not that there is anything wrong with using them, I absolutely love all my carbide cutters it's just a part of the hobby I am trying to learn to expand my abilities with tool use 👍🏻👍🏻

I suppose it is all down to personal preference in the end, some people like them and some don't. At the end of the day it is your hobby so use what you feel comfortable with and get the most enjoyment in using. 👍🏻👍🏻

Very nice bowl. The wood grain is amazing. I was wondering how deep you made the mortise on the back? Is there a formula that you use to determine this? Thanks.

Thanks terry, I tend to do the depth of my mortise to the depth of my jaws on my chuck or just a slight shallower,I find this to keep the bowl more stable when turning 👍🏻👍🏻
