I just LOVE how excited and you get over how pretty your sister looks in a bonnet, and how pretty you think it looks. I love that you can appreciate the beauty that's there even in plainness. I feel like as humans, we are just so wired to notice and enjoy beauty, and that a person doesn't have to be fancy to be pretty.

Like, getting the small, single roll size to do the child-size caps, but if you had a particularly large head, needing to get the mega rolls for the perfect creases. And the men having no idea that's why you always get that sort. It's the tiny things which amuse me :)

The German Baptist men, like the Amish, had long beards, no mustache and wore black hats all the time outdoors and suits to church, funerals, and weddings...the German Baptist tho, had cars and electricity and phones unlike the Amish. Fun fact ...German Baptist and Amish men didn't have mustaches bc back during the civil war they didn't wanna look like other men who went to war. The style of the times was long beard and mustaches. German Baptist and Amish didn't and still don't , join the military or go to war.

There's nothing 'abnormal' about feeling more beautiful in plain clothes. Women all over the world feel the same wearing hijab or turbans or tichels or wigs along with modest clothing. I hear comments all the time about people 'feeling sorry' for women wearing modest clothing and covering their hair - but why should they? Why is it so hard to believe that they find a freedom in covering that other people find in letting it all hang out? Let people alone to live and dress as they see fit. Beauty is found everywhere and in everyone if only you have the eyes to see it.

My oldest daughter recently started going to a local Mennonite school and she absolutely loves the dresses she wears to school. I sew most of them so she gets to pick out fabric. Her teacher always has the prettiest dresses. I'm going to learn to make a few cape dresses for myself to wear to school functions where I need to help out because I always feel like I'm being disrespectful wearing my regular clothes, even though I've always dressed very modestly. I still haven't quite figured out what to do with my hair though. I won't wear a cap since I'm not a Mennonite and don't want to be disrespectful or anything but I also don't want to just leave my long hair down. I assume a regular bun would be acceptable but I have no idea.

Check out Lynette Yoder’s channel or the one for Meagan Fox Unlocked. They are both Mennonite and have videos on this topic. They cover their flat bun with a doily. But you could also use a scarf.
@Hephzibah162 жыл бұрын
As someone from a non-Mennonite heritage who has become Mennonite, I would say that you do not need to feel disrespectful attending such functions in your regular clothes. As long as you make sure that they are not super revealing or form fitting everyone will be very understanding, especially since they are a church welcoming enough to let your child attend their school. I know there are some Mennonite churches that would not, the one you are connected with sounds wonderful. As one of the other commenters said a skirt and blouse would be fine putting your hair in a braid, or a bun would be fine. If you do not believe in the covering I would discourage you from wearing any sort of cloth on your head, doily, scarf, or otherwise. Have you ever studied the covering? Are you interested in finding out more about it? I'm sure there are ladies at the church that would be willing to share with you.
@karenramnath99932 жыл бұрын
There are lots of ways to cover hair besides a cap. Some Mennonites wear a hanging veil, and this can look very nice with clothing that is maybe conservative-but-not-Mennonite.

@Luann Knepp "Your hair is straublich!" (Don't know if I spelled that right at all...) I'm so glad you said that!!! My mom's family is deeply rooted in Amish and Mennonite culture. Both sets of grandparents on that side were Mennonite, my mom grew up Mennonite, my step-father's family is Mennonite, and I still have Amish Cousins. Some of my aunt's and uncles still speak fluent Pennsylvania Dutch. My mom used to always say when I was little and she was combing my hair, "your hair is so stribley," or even "stroobley". I never new that that was a word rooted in Pennsylvania Dutch and German! I knew what it meant... Messy, hanging about, unruly, unkempt, tangly... But didn't know that I knew the word because of that background. Sort of like I always grew up knowing what a Schneifle was (a little piece of garbage on the floor or countertop) and a Fronzel was (a little loose string hanging off of your clothes). (Don't know if I spelled them right though...). I never realized they were not common known words until I got to college and asked a friend to pick up some Schniefles on the ground... She gave me a completely blank stare... And then tried to tell me that that wasn't a word. Lololol!!! 😊❤️ Also, I'm curious where your Amish community was?? My Amish and Mennonite family mostly have revolved around northern Indiana, with a few down around St Louis. :)

Sorry this is so off topic and if you don’t want to answer I understand. I’m from the PNW I lived in Missouri for a little bit (almost a year) and when I went clothing shopping I would always see young Amish women picking out sexy lingerie and giggling about it or this other time a husband was picking it out with his wife and they just kept giggling about it they were too cute.. is it cause it’s lingerie that makes em giggle when picking that out or like cause it’s something so sexy ? I grew up Mennonite. Pretty simmilar customs as Amish when it came to clothes hair ect. Just not quite as strict. It was considered sinful to cut hair or wear pants or wear makeup. Just their way of trying to dress modest and not be like the world. They had Bible verses they based these traditions /beliefs on. At least most of them. They had silly ones like a bride had to wear a black or navy blue dress. years go by and they change their views on that to allow nearly white dresses.. I don't look down on them bc I know most are just doing what they think is right. I don't think any church has it quite right. Sure would be nice if we all could agree on everything eh. One day..

Unfortunately, it seems like the world has a whole lot of things backwards now. Many people will say that a woman, no matter what culture she grew up in, is snobbish and/or fake when acting in a such way. They'd be wrong, but they would say it. I was, at age 48, trying to explain having class and showing proper etiquette. My mother's said I was being fake. I can play around and act silly with the best if them, but I also know when to put away the play and act like I do have manners and class. Being able to switch back and forth (and all the in-betweens) isn't being fake, it is called being adaptable. These ladies showed us a glimpse into their past. And with such beautiful attitudes! I respect how they can still respect and honor their tradition-rich history. It speaks wonders for their parents. Blessings all!!!
@jillybean85872 жыл бұрын
Submissiveness and femininity are two different words. Submissiveness is part of the traditional roles of women as God made them. Women who see submissiveness as a bad thing perhaps don’t appreciate how men have a role and women do. On one hand women want to be “strong independent women” but no one can be completely independent in this world without the help and love of men in their capacity too. It’s a perfect unity. Women can be strong in their own rights but we are to submit as one does when they show love and receive love in return.
