Plain Bob Doubles from Selling, Kent

St Mary's Church in Selling, Kent, is an interesting structure with a prominent central tower. The building dates from the 1190s with additions dating from the 14th and 16th centuries. The building consists of a cruciform layout, with shallow transepts taking the form of chapels. The south transept has a later stair turret inserted to give access to the tower. The building was restored between 1841 and 1846 by Richard Charles Hussey, architect of many notable early Gothic Revival churches. What we see today is an interesting blend of many styles that harmoniously mix and create a charming building.
The tall tower contains a light 5-3-26cwt ring of eight bells, tenor in C. This light octave replaces a heavier ring of mixed vintage. In 1766, the original and likely medieval bells were recast and made into a six by Lester and Pack of London. In 1899, the bells were rehung by Mears and Stainbank in a new cast iron frame with the 3rd and 5th bells recast due to being cracked. The whole ring was tuned and an Ellacombe chiming apparatus was installed. In 1980, the ring was removed and was recast cast in 1980 by the Whitechapel Bell Foundry of London. The new bells were hung in the existing frame of 1899 by Mears and Stainbank and the chiming apparatus was removed. All in all, Selling are a lovely little ring. I suppose you could say they have a 'selling' point. Enjoy! :P
