What a beautiful bowl this is ! I' like to try it myself, i have a stem of magnolia cut down last year and made some nice bowls from it, gold leafs are easy to find, so, i look foreward to try. When I succeed, it will be a wonderful wedding present for a good friend. Thank you so much for showing this technique ! Cheers Stefan

I want to head straight to my shop and try this. Would like to know how you finished the bowl? Did you put anything on top of the gold leaf, ie lacquer, oil, shellac, etc...?
@TurnAWoodBowl9 ай бұрын
Patrica, lacquer is good for maintaining the gloss. Happy Turning!

Years ago when I was doing calligraphy I used synthetic God leaf but found that it discolored over time. I found that using bronze leaf did not. While I don't do calligraphy much now, I still use bronze leaf on some of my turnings. You might want to give it a try as it looks very much like gold.

Very nice! As I'm sure you know, David Marks has done some beautiful gold and silver leaf patinations on bowls, as well as then exposing the silver or gold leaf to chemicals to bring out some vivid colors.

You can use 100% isopropyl alcohol for shellac. It’s much cheaper than ethanol due to the taxes (about $17/gallon) and you can get it on Amazon. It’s not toxic like methanol. You wouldn’t want to drink it - you’d get pretty sick to your stomach - and it all evaporates anyways so it’s fine for food grade items. You don’t want to breathe a lot of methanol fumes, but isopropyl is pretty harmless stuff - it’s used a lot in medicine as rubbing alcohol. It doesn’t cause blindness like methanol and it’s not carcinogenic. I have been using it for years to make shellac from flakes. Ethanol is great, but due to the stupid government denaturing requirements and taxes, it’s too much aggravation.

Great techniques for boring bowls (they can't all have a lot of character).

Hi Kent. I love how you use your jam chuck but I wonder why you don't use a face plate style chuck from time to time? I've made jam chucks based on your design and used them occasionally but I also like using my Nova Cole face plate chuck when I want access to the foot without the tailstock being in my way. Anyway, I've learned so much from you over the past couple of years and I'm starting to make some pretty interesting bowls thanks to your videos. Please keep up the good work and thank you. Todd at granitestatewoods.

Todd, Good question. I've found that the jam chuck works great and is quick and cheap. Also, when I turn live edge bowls, I can't use a Cole Jaw chuck. All the best to you and Happy Turning! Kent

around the 14 minute mark you clean up your tenon but what you do next I cant understand for the life of me. Why not wait to do your finishing cuts for when youve rechucked your piece? As you say there will be a small wobble (sometimes a not so small wobble) Is it to limit the amount of cutting downhill?
@TurnAWoodBowl Жыл бұрын
For this piece, because I inked the entire outside on the lathe, I needed to have the shape complete from rim to outside the foot while it was in the chuck. I hope that helps. Happy Turning! Kent

Hey Kent, Wow just wow. i am amazed by how artistically talented you are. BTW that was a very slick way to do a jam chuck. I gotta say it takes a lot I do mean a LOT of talent to do what you did here. You took a beautiful little wood bowl and purposely made it into a bowl that looks like a plastic bowl off an assembly line. Just looking at it you can not tell it is a wood bowl. I understand mixing things up a bit. I have been using 2 coats walnut danish oil and then topping it with 2 coats of shellac. It darkens the lighter wood and it literally glows in the light but it still looks like a wooden bowl. In all honesty I must admit you are very very talented but to me you ruined that bowl because it does not even look like wood any longer. Sorry but that is my honest opinion. I gave you a like because of the obvious thought and tremendous amount of talent it took to make a "plastic" looking bowl. Please dont do that to wood. Yall have a wonderful day.

Really neat. Real gold leaf is extremely delicate and tearable and would have been a real pain to apply on the bowl.
