My Best Wood Finishing Tips For Wood Turning

Here I show how I use some of my favorite finishes used in wood turning.
They are all easy to use and create a wonderful finish.
What I feel is the most important part of a good finish is the sanding.
That is the first step in your finish. Your final finish will only be as good as the sanding.
These are products that I have used for years and I was not ask to show them they are just the ones I like and use. There might be better and I am always willing to try new things so let me know what you like to use.

I've been using Deft Lacquer since wood shop in high school in 1963. I built a small book case and finished with Deft. I just recently reglued the case but the finish was still good.

Thank you Lori. I have always used a sealer first. I have seen others skip the sealer. I am sure the instructions says to use sealer. I have found it gets a better finish by using sealer first. But I also will use it after putting many coats of lacquer or other finishes and then use the abrasive paste and polishing paste. I did that on my last video and it is one of the nicest finishes I have done. Thanks for watching, Gary

Thank you Dave and I have a lot of things around here finished in Deft. As a matter of fact I have 2 Walnut boards glued up and made an all around 2 shelf stand in 1963 that are finished with Deft. That is what we used in high school shop class. And glued with good ol Elmers wood glue. Joints still good after all these years and have been in my garage for many years. Oh yes for sure they love catio Byron. We got these 2 as kittens 3 years ago and we were about ready to let them be indoor outdoor cats. The adult cat we had was and they always watched him through the window. Sadly we lost Scooter to a coyote and that ended well over 40 years of indoor outdoor cats for us. There are just way to many coyotes around now. We live close to a nature area and golf course. So I finally broke down and made them this. That was a concern as well but I built it very strong. And do they love it!

Thank you Bruce, I do like the finish with the sealer and Acks but for segmented turning I choose the other. And I enjoyed making the Catio. These 2 guys have waited 3 years to taste the fresh air. They were kittens when we lost our indoor outdoor cat to a cayote so we never let them go out. So I gave in and built them this even though I was still concerned. They really love it! Ive used deft for 50 years great finish. number one fot gloss finish. paste finish great for a more satin look. min wax 3rd but still fine finish, particilarly when rubbed on with jumerous coats. great video!

I think the lacquer is always my favorite finish of yours, Gary. Just always has a nice warm glow to it. The Acks sure does a great job. This video is going to be very helpful to turners for years to come. Great job, buddy! My cat is sitting here watching with me, in between dozing off. I woke him up and replayed the Catio part a couple times. He made his usual, tiny sound he makes when he wants something and then looked up at me, quizzically, like, "hey, I need me one of those!" I wish I had time to build him one. In the mean time, if a box shows up and you hear this little meow coming from it, just consider him on vacation and put him up in the Catio suite! Phil

I also like the Lacquer finish as well. I think I am getting lazy because I seem to be using more Polycrylic. It just goes on so easy it is hard not to use. But today I went back to oil based wipe on poly. Perfect for what I turned giving it a very nice warm look. I was thinking of starting a CB&B...Cat Bed and Breakfast and we will have reasonable rates if he cares to stay. No promise I will send him back because we saw him and he is a cutie. We just do not feel safe letting ours out with all the coyotes around here. Golf course at the end of our dead end street and a huge nature area. We lost our Scooter to one 3 years ago and these guys were kittens so we have never let them out. I do hope more see the video as it seems a lot get a bit worried when it comes to putting the finish on. They should also be using shellac after seeing how great yours looks after you put it on. But each step you do you need to prepare for the next and they all lead to the last step which is the finishing. So turn as smooth as you can and sand it to as good as you can get it. Lately I’ve even taken a few things, remounted them on the lathe and completely sanded the finish off then sanded them properly before refinishing them. Quite a different outcome! This was a wonderful side-by-side demonstration of finishes. It will help many woodturners. I usually finish my pieces with shellac or satin wipe-on poly. I appreciate the water based poly dries faster than wipe-on, especially the first coat. I also use Ack's products; they're excellent. For a high gloss finish, I buff the finishes then wax. Your sanding advice is right on. The more time I spend on this, the better it will look. There's no short-cuts here. That's gorgeous walnut and it really deserves a fine finish.

Thanks Ray, very happy you enjoyed the video. I have repainted sections of cars with spray lacquer. By no means would I call myself and expert in it but I did alright. I am sure you could do a great job with spray lacquer but by all means try the Polycrylic and just wipe it on. After about the 3d coat you will see the rewards in doing so. You may think after the first 1 or 2 coats it is not going to work. But it will! Even did some body work but I used bondo a lot on some of the large patterns I built. It was the fastest way to put in large fillets and create shapes as well. Matter of fact I made a full sized model of the right fender of a Kenworth big rig. It was part of a mold to make a fiberglass prototype before going into production. Thanks for watching, Gary

Very informative while making things look fairly easy to get a good finish. I use Acks products in my work which is mostly fishing rod handles for the custom rods I build. I have used sealer and several different finishes including water based lacquer and then using Acks sanding paste and polishing paste to complete the work.

I recently build a very big information desk and trust me I was concerned about the finish. It is the first thing seen. I had test board to see what I liked. I went with my first choice. Gary, my mind was swirling until you showed the 4th piece with the poly also and it convinced me to go with the Poly. It sure gives a deep finish and just highlights the grain beautifully. I want to give you a big thumbs up for doing this finishing lesson. Man, you used a lot of Acks Sanding Paste & Polish for this demonstration and I know that stuff is not cheap. So thanks for giving us three great choices. No more excuses now!😉

Thank you my friend, I do like my Polycrylic! It really does not take much of the Acks to do the job. I noticed after editing the video I put 4 times as much as is needed on the last piece. What I liked is all 3 finishes go on the same so you can decided on the look you are after. Take care buddy, Gary

Hey Gary, thanks for this video. Good info here. 😎 I've used Ack's over CA finishes on pens as well as over O.B. Shine Juice. It's amazing how you can use it before a finish, after a finish or AS a finish. Also, love the cat window. 😎

We always have had indoor outdoor cats but when these two were kitten's we lost our older cat to a coyote so we never let these guys out. So this was the perfect thing for them. @@ThePapa1947 when I used the minwax finishes I like to use the high gloss on the first two coats then go to the semi gloss after, I think it gives a deeper finish. Very similar to the Deft finish.

I really appreciate you making this video. I am still a bit nervous we to turning and have struggled with the finishes. I just got a bowl done with a pretty good finish. I used 2 or 3 coates of sanding sealer, the Acts abrasive paste and acts polish and then OB shine juice. It came out better then any of my past projects. I will try the Acts Pastrana polish over my finish on the next project. I like the shine you got on all the pieces .

Thank you Joann and I know that after putting all the work into a turning you can get a bit nervous when it comes to putting the finish on. You will reach a point where you just know you will get the finish you want. I have used friction polish for the final finish as well and that is basically just a shellac finish that shines up when applied. If I do want to use shellac I will put the sealer on then use the waxed shellac and then use the paste on top of that. But the friction polish which is what you call OB shine juice works good as well. It is a form of a French Polish method which goes back to the 19th century. Years ago I finished furniture using that method. Happy turning and finishing, Gary

Thanks for watching and the information. I have never used brads so I can not speak for it. I know that if I keep buffing the polish with a clean cloth it does not leave a waxy feel. But you do have to make sure you get it polished off. Again I have not tired tung wax and appreciate your input. Thanks for watching, Gary

Nice job, Gary. I've been using a lacquer based cellulose sealer but I think when it runs out I'll give one of these a try. They look great. Also a fan of Ack's products. Been using them for a few years now. Thanks for sharing your techniques. I definitely picked up a few pointers. Hope you are safe and out of harms way with all of the wildfires out west.

The fact is, I had a woodshop class in high school in 1950 and learned to use the wood lathe. I still have lamps and bowls I made. Seeing you cutup the shelving boards and make a beautiful bowl was interesting. I continued in woodworking while in the Air Force and beyond. Not until about two years ago did the lathe-bug hit me. I only have a mini, so limited on what I can turn, but have enjoyed segment bowls and much more. Did I email with you a year or so ago about making the stars? That was a great help and I now put stars in the bottom of most bowls as my "signature". I too have used Deft for many years and it's my go-to finish, except for where I use mineral oil and bees wax for a food-safe finish. Thanks for your response.

Apparently I have a very unusually shaped appendix. The first time I came in to see what was wrong they didn’t even find it. Sent us home and said if it hurts again come back and see us. They must have put the ‘A’ Team on it this time. Only took four or five hours to diagnose it. Now it’s waiting for someone to do something about it. Thanks for the kind thoughts, Gary! …..Gord

I like the example you showed using the deft. Now the steps: you sand the finished product to 400 grit. Then how many coats of deft. Then you apply the abrasive, then the paste wax Thanks again

Thank you Tommy! I will use as many as 10 coats of Deft sprayed on. Depending on the wood mostly. If the wood is hard then 4 or coats will do the job. All depends how much I sand between coats. The finish might look very smooth after spraying but when you sand with 400 you will see if it is a little heavy in places. This will give you the most level finish and will show more depth. Thank you Leo I appreciate your comments. I do hope it takes the mystery out of putting the finish on a turning. It was so much fun to do it did not seem like it took long. I guess what took a little work was tying the clips together so it did not bounce around a lot. That was because I did not do each one from start to finish. That meant i could do each step on one while the other was drying. When I see a dislike in the first 30 seconds of a video then I know that someone is enjoying hitting the dislike button. Why I have no idea and I am not interested in another war in my life. But I certainly enjoy hearing that it has helped many and that is all that really matters. Take care my friend, Gary
