Totally agree on the hammered coach gun. It’s the only shotgun I’d buy or compete with. Hamerless are obviously faster and easier but not nearly as cool looking imo. And that’s half the point in CAS lol.

I don’t use my hammered-double in a lot of main match stuff, because I just couldn’t keep up. I’m fast with it… but a hammerless, single trigger, in the right hands, is a winning combination. Yes, I am competitive and I do like to win my category… but I also enjoy being versatile with all different types of firearms (especially ones as cool as the hammered double barrel shotgun!).

Q: On the video timer at 5:11 is an inset picture of one of your Pietta Bros. revolvers. It is the only time it shows your revolver clearly. Looks like a Colt 1860 Army grip frame instead of the shorter and original 1851 Navy grip frame. Hard to tell, but previous videos seem to show 1851. IIRC, previously you mention that you like "1851 over 1860" specifically for grip size. My imagination, or do you prefer the 1860? I can't decide which grip frame I like best, so I just keep buying more and more Colt replicas. Even had to throw in some Dragoon and Walkers to test. Still testing, and hopefully will be 20 years from now. I enjoy your videos, (even though you shoot PIETTAs), and appreciate your contributions to CAS. Enjoy your coffee!
@JEDiTV3 жыл бұрын
I prefer the ‘51 Navy. But, the grips might be slightly different between my Uberti Conversion Revolvers and these Pietta Percussion Revolvers. If there is a difference, it isn’t enough that I notice it while shooting (I’m not home to check now). I do have a set of Pietta Peacemaker clones with ‘60 Army sized grips. I don’t “love” them but they don’t bother me… it’s just more grip than I need. I like that philosophy, keep buying until you find what you like best 😆 Thanks for the compliments, comment and coffee. -Jed 🤠 ☕️
@HellgateSASS33023 жыл бұрын
Cedar_Tree, the Pietta Colt Navies have more of a bell shape to the bottom of the grip and are a bit wider at the bottom. The San Marco and Uberti Navies have the typical Navy/SAA grip with less flare than the Piettas. To me, the Pietta grips make the gun point high as my hand tends to choke up on the grip. I have swapped out Pietta Navy grips for Pietta 1860 Army grips because of the better fit for me.

I was walking around plainsman for some time and this year I started participating in some at last. I agree on shotguns with You. Hammerless for plainsman are not the "right" choice. And thats why I have nice hammered double in work by my gunsmith. As I have some warm thoughts for classic cowboy category so I have plans for using it also for CAS. For revolvers I have 1861 navy and will support it with some 1851 (as soon as uberti will make them again - the stores are still empty around here after covid mess). For rifle my favourite is springfield trapdoor but I live on wrong continent and they are quite rare and cost way to much around here so probably it will end with some old rolling block carbine in 44-40 that my friend has and that he borrows me to the competitions. Hi, JedI, I proudly own a genuine 1863 54 cal 4th generation Burnside Carbine, am I allowed to use it in Plainsman side match? Thanks for your opinion about it! I would also use my 5th generation Manhattan Firearms 36 cal navy ( 6 shots) revolvers and my French antique Lefaucheux 16 gauge side by side shotgun manufactured around 1890! Thanks!

Howdy, I am not familiar with the Burnside Carbine. I saw on another comment where you deduced that you could not use it in competition, how did you come to that conclusion? Being unfamiliar with that particular firearm I’m not sure either way really but I don’t see anything specific in the Plainsman rule book excluding it. -Jed 🤠

@@JEDiTV H Jed i, my Burnside is a percussion carbine, like the first Sharps. It uses an unusual ice-cream cone shaped brass cartridge but there's no primer, I have to put a percussion cap on the nipple. But with practice it can be reloaded pretty fast. Also, it's a 54 cal bullet.

@@elenas4878 - Interesting. The Plainsman rules do specifically say “single-shot rifle firing a traditional blackpowder rifle or pistol caliber cartridge”… I would interpret that to mean a cartridge with a primer… 🤷♂️ But, I would think most Match Directors would allow you to use that in most Plainsman events. Certainly it’s something that could be used for Long Range. But, I’d check with the folks on the SASS Wire before getting geared up and heading to a match. 😉 -Jed 🤠

@@JEDiTV Thanks a lot, Jed, I'm shooting the old lady at the range and it's a surprisingly accurate gun for an 160 years old civil war carbine I would like to use it in Plainsman matches with the other antiques I got, I'll check with the single action clubs in my area.

On your 1851 Navies: What replacement nipples did you install? I've never seen factory nipples with a beveled top flash hole. Did you "cone" the tops of the nipples?
@JEDiTV11 ай бұрын
Howdy Hellgate, they are the TRESO nipples. I didn’t do anything to ‘em other than screw ‘em in.

Hammer shotguns are sure more fitting, but more expensive and not as available as hammerless. CAS is already quite expensive to start, let people have old russian IZ and Baikals :)

Absolutely Sinbad, I agree, it is better to have folks playing the game with hammerless shotguns than not being able to afford to play at all. Perhaps a better way for me to phrase that would have been to suggest that those with Hammered Shotguns be placed into a separate category like “modern” vs “traditional”… and that might complicate things more. 🤷♂️ But, like I said in the video if I need to pick up a little speed or the competition is a little close I’m not ashamed to grab up that hammerless single-trigger to gain a couple of seconds. -Jed 🤠

I'll let my idiot flag fly for the sake of curiosity. With the carbine (or shotgun for that matter), is it permitted to have rounds held in hand while you fire? Like stripping three of the .45-70 rounds out of the belt, firing one by one (obviously) and loading from the hand rather than from the belt? Seems like that'd have to shave fractions of a second off the clock and that'd start adding up to a big savings.
@JEDiTV3 жыл бұрын
Yes, absolutely. And you’ll see me doing more of that on the next Plainsman Load Out video where I use my Trapdoor. In fact you might see that on the first episode of the 2021 Washington State Championship match during the Plainsman clip I showed. Great question, by the way. -Jed 🤠

@@JEDiTV @JED iTV Excellent to hear. I was thinking maybe there was some safety sally rule about it. BTW, excellent work at 6:45 in this vid. Don't know if that was intentional, but in your position I'd just smile and own it as by design. ;) I'd imagine quite a few tried that seeing the dropper's positioning, and likely didn't fare as well.

Tried to get all four in two shots so I didn’t have to reload. Didn’t quite get that one. 😊

You are destroying your Sharps. You need to half cock first before opening.
@JEDiTVАй бұрын
I’ve heard that a time or two in this comment section. I appreciate the concern and I have been working on half-cock, open, load, close, full-cock, fire. Sometimes, the adrenaline gets to me and I get in a bit of a hurry.
