I let my pigs out while I'm setting up the next fence. They run and check things out. When I'm done, I shake the bucket and they come running

Nice, I do something similar if I have to move them a distance!

I let my goats and cows out and then whistle when I want them to come back. They know the whistle means some alphala hay or other treats and they come running. Just whistle everytime you shake that bucket of feed and they will learn very quickly.

No, please don't apologize. You are completely right! You need to trust your animals and they need to trust you... this is called a relationship. Fostering a good relationship with your animals is the whole joy of farming. You build a routine for your animals and they look forward to it-- feeding time, moving to new pasture time. Most importantly, the animals learn what to do and the day will go much more smoothly. I wouldn't want my animals to cower from me... our sheep were touchy enough already. I like how the pigs follow you on your tractor. They are very food motivated!

Hogs are very smart animals. Remember hogs can be vicious too! I remembet as a boy there were older farmers that died in a lot from of a heart attack and when found there wasn't much left of them.

I have grown comfrey, particularly the russian bocking 14 variety I think. I've cut it for pigs a few times, but they were never really excited about it. I don't let them graze it in case they root it up. All that to say, I don't mess with it much because it's a lot of work to cut it and drop it for them.
