Obstructive, massive, problem-level clutter overwhelmed me... until I decluttered thousands of items! 2024 marks my fifth year of decluttering, and I am now bridging from decluttering and minimalism into simple living, slow living, and sharing tips with you for minimalist living!

Erica, when I was in grammar school, we rotated through teachers for our lessons starting in 1st grade. There were three teachers per grade until 5th & 6th when there were four teachers per grade, and each teacher was on a team of two. My homeroom teachers also taught math and science for both years. We rotated for ELA and Soc. Science. I remember much of what I learned in 5th grade ELA/Soc. Science classes that were taught by Miss. Gramps. She had been a kindergarten teacher, and when we were unruly, she made us put our heads on our desks as though we were in kindergarten. A lot was going on at home that school year as well. Miss. Gramps had us create a small booklet (8.5 x 11 folded in half) for each social science unit. I remember writing about the Herring Gull and the Eskimos (they were called back in 1975-1976). I also did a diary for a week of a girl during the Revolutionary Times, and I know there were others. This was how she combined the writing we needed with the knowledge checks that she needed. That was the year we had to memorize the capitals of all the states. She taught us that Maryland's capital was Annapolis and that they were both female names. I am sure there were other memory aids. In this long story, I am saying that you are doing precisely what Miss. Gramps did nearly 50 years ago and it works.

I so admire all you do. I didn't have the option to home school. I raised my children long ago. I wish I'd had the opportunity. Well done!

I admire how you adjust how you teach with their personalities and what lights them up to be inspired by what their learning so awesome!! Really wish I would have been able to home school my kiddos years ago.

Sounds like you have a really well organised and comprehensive system of lesson learning Eric. I love how you individualise the learning plans to meet each child’s level, abilities and interests. I always love how each year you place emphasis on the importance of reading. I know from being a project leader in weekend youth groups years ago that getting boys to read can be difficult because in general, as I’m sure you already know, they tend to be more ‘hands-on’ and visual learners; but sitting down and reading teaches children so much more than just appreciating great stories. Such as the ability to sit still, mindful and critical thinking, cognitive understanding, patience and commitment, visualisation skills and developmental questioning. Also I love the way home schooling allows more time for each child to fully work through the stages and life lessons of the Learning Process i.e: Discovering, Remembering, Understanding, Analysing, Evaluating, Applying, Creating and Sharing.

I read The lion the witch and the wardrobe to my kids. They loved it. If you want an older kid version of these themes, “The Baron Grounds” by David A. Robertson is a great book. (Book 1 in series of 3) Description on the back is, Narnia meets traditional indigenous stories of the sky and constellations in an epic middle grade fantasy series from award winning author. A good extension to Narnia for the older 2.
