A small plane crashed into power lines in Gaithersburg, Maryland, knocking out power for thousands across Montgomery County.

I just left the scene, is 1/2 mile from our house. I saw the flashes from the explosion. Just before midnight the fire and rescue chained the plane in place and by 12:25 had the pilot and passenger in a bucket and brought them safely back down to Earth! Well done!

Looking at both the pilot and passengers hands holding on to the pole is heart wrenching. Those poor guys had to have been terrifyed. Glad to hear they made it out safe!

The hi voltage lines are serviced hot. Or live with a helicopter in rural areas. Electric needs a ground source to complete a circuit.

Glad to see the pilot and the passenger are OK! Remembering our motivation as kids in school back in the 60s and 70s, in this case, we'd all be hoping the electricity is NOT restored in time for the next day of school! (Of course, we always had to make up those lost school days in June, but the excitement of getting away with a school day off was GREAT FUN!)

1.25 mile visibility and a 200 foot cloud ceiling don't mean pilots "often" use instruments to fly - they're well within conditions where instrument flight is a must. This pilot may not have been trained in instrument flight. Without that, it's easy to get disoriented. Even with training, that ceiling may have been too low to land at Gaithersburg. Pilots have to check the weather all along their route before taking off - maybe he didn't, or maybe conditions suddenly got worse. Or maybe he had an equipment failure, or ran out of fuel if he kept missing the runway. I got a pilot's license, training out of Gaithersburg, but only for "visual" flight.

Thought I saw a gremlin once, swore I saw one. It was freaky. Turned-out to be a big redtail hawk sizzling on a powerline at the pole. Flames and sparks were bursting from It's chest and in the dark it's open wing were lit-up. They are lucky. They could've been the hawk.

There are transmission lines everywhere. You'll see them often driving down an interstate. It's improbable for any one crash to hit one but not impossible. Most transmission lines wouldn't be under a no-fly zone...unless you meant this would be one for another reason?

It's insane in 2022 that we do not have better redundancies on power grids. One pole gets taken out and they don't have power 15 miles away. You would think they would be a pole every mile to reroute all that power. Egyptians build the Great pyramids and we can't even build a power grid

You know absolutely nothing about the power grid. This is not a power pole, it’s a transmission tower with high voltage. Do you know the cost of installing a transmission tower? People already complain about views with utility towers so you want to put more? You’re also forgetting about the real estate part and how difficult it it’s to get an easement or right-of-way. This is from somewhere who’s worked in the electric utility industry.

Remember 100% of plane accidents happen in the air so we should pass laws that keep planes on the ground. This will solve these high risk planes that cause all the accidents in the air. You're 100% more likely to crash once you take off. Since we police DUIs, seat belts, & all other aspects of life this way I can't believe we haven't addressed this important danger yet. It works!

I'm pretty sure they had a beacon light that's why they have those at our airports and any tower has beacon lights strobe lights so you can see it in the area of your pilot but out there maybe they're just hold on they don't really need them I guess I don't know or maybe they had them and it went out tragedy but otherwise it could also have been cuz he's old maybe he has diabetic or something who knows not judging

Gaithersburg does have a beacon light, but in those conditions, the pilot wouldn't have seen it.
