@Sidney Mantissa Are you referring to the fact they didn't shut the engine off before landing?
@Kev376
@Kev376 4 жыл бұрын
@Sidney Mantissa It's recommended to just keep the engine running and allow the prop strike, because if you overrun the airfield then you can still use the engine to go around for another attempt when you cant get the gear down.
@Kev376
@Kev376 4 жыл бұрын
@Sidney Mantissa you must not have a pilots license since your making these recommendations but firstly when you have a problem with the airplane it's always recommended to put your life above the plane, let the plane be the insurances aircraft from the point it fails. Things can happen maybe you get hit with a hard gust or something that makes you uncomfortable, but trying to say a pilot is wrong because he gave himself another layer of safety ( go around capability ) isn't the right answer. I'm not hating on pilots that shut their engines down in this situation, it really is what they are comfortable with. And secondly even if you maintain an airplane up to standards things can still go wrong and I fail to see how that relates to what to do after a problem does happen.
@CipherVR
@CipherVR 4 жыл бұрын
Main reason to shut down an engine is to try not to prop strike, thus needing an engine overhaul, but even if the engine is shut down the prop will still most likely strike, going through the overhaul anyway. Someone should know that if they apparently have 30k flying experience. You use everything to your disposal to arrive alive and the engine running is definitely one. Especially if you're trying to come in as slow as possible to ride VSO.
@Kev376
@Kev376 4 жыл бұрын
@@CipherVR I'm well aware of that fact, but my point is that losing a layer of safety in order to save yourself a buck isn't a choice I would make, and even though people do that. You should check out the video "Why Gear Up Landings Happen" by AVWEB to get others opinions on it.

better to keep it on for any emergency actions they would need to take. also engine might be powering hydraulics for slight control.

Why not shut down the engine, shut off fuel and then kill the master switch? To fly with power all the way until the prop strikes is foolish.
@Rakusan2
@Rakusan2 4 жыл бұрын
By shutting it off you are giving your self more work, you are unlikely to save the prop, you will definitively not save your self from redoing the engine, and you might not be able to start the engine in time to redo your landing if you need to.

What a beautiful landing. I'm wondering if it's advisable to unlock the canopy beforehand (in case the landing is not so beautiful, and theres some buckling in the air frame that prevents it opening)?

Linda Venable. Just to politely let you know, they were never in any danger. Gear up landings can happen often. There are specific procedures for them. You see that he made a a beautiful descent, floated in the ground effect until the wings stopped creating lift, then set her down buttery smooth. Not a problem for almost any pilot, including students. Just a slow news cycle.

3 bladed prop..not going to save it anyway... more important to focus on the landing with power, so if first run is not ideal, go around is an option.
