Wow great video. I have been a woodworker/cabinet maker for over 40 years and this is one of the best jigs for sharpening planer and jointer blades. It is so simple, yet i never thought of it.

I’ve had this product for over two weeks and I’ve used it almost every other day kzbin.infoUgkxDcr-y2Pf6xdnrFHrSP7dl9kpKaCozcSQ with my knives. After the first session of sharpening my cleaver, I recall slicing through a tomato, veggies, and meat a lot cleaner and smoother than ever.I only give my knives 10 to 20 strokes of the sharpener before every other use, depending on how much force I’m putting on the blade against the cutting the board.I don’t have expensive cutlery. Most of them are cheap ikea knives and my cleaver was bought at a market at a low price ($10?). The sharpener has given the knives a much better edge and I’m very happy with it.I don’t push down on the blade sharpener with the knife. I let gravity do it’s thing. As you’re supposed to.

I have used this similar jig for years to sharpen my 12" planer blades, I just run them on my 6" x 48" belt sander w/ 120 grit then 220 grit does a fine job in a very short time. However, your second kerf to clamp the blades in with screws is genius! I would use thin shims that I had to make that I always had to mess with, they didn't work that good. next time I need it I will modify my jig or make a new one with your clamps. Many Thanks!!
@advance-heating
@advance-heating 11 ай бұрын
My question was going to be what grain of grit ? Whetstones are often 400 then 800 grit, but you think that in sand paper 120 then 220 is ideal ?
@samTollefson
@samTollefson 11 ай бұрын
@@advance-heating@advance-heating Using 120 and then 220 has worked fine for me; I used to run a flat stone over the knives while still in the jig but found that unnecessary. Good luck!
@advance-heating
@advance-heating 11 ай бұрын
@@samTollefson I'm also thinking of mounting all three blades into a hardwood jig at once, all three pointing the same way but far enough apart to keep them stable while grinding by hand. Think it'll work?
@samTollefson
@samTollefson 11 ай бұрын
@@advance-heatingI don't see why not; however, I would put 2 parallel and the 3rd one alternate to have a broader base for stability and use a hardwood block for it. In my situation, my planer has blades that are sharp on both sides, so one set is two sets of blades. Before I found this method of sharpening them, I would buy a new set when the old ones wore out. So when I made my sharpening jig I sharpened maybe 12 sets of knives, that was 10 years ago and I still have 4 or 5 sets to go through before I need to sharpen them again, pretty much a life time supply.

I have been using the woodblock 'blade holder' system for years with great success. Mine will hold the blades by friction alone, so no screws needed, and when it gets too worn it only takes a minute or two to make a new. I do put my sandpaper on a flat sheet of glass though, to assure flatness and no rolling of the edges, but I never bother with the whetstone and just remove the bur gently on the same sandpaper. It literally only takes a few minutes to get good sharp blades but I always find that removing the blades, and then reinstalling them, is what often makes me drag my feet before I get around to touch up the blades as it is a time consuming fiddle.

Hi, I surf a lot on the internet, I never saw this before. The jig is fantastic, but the way you control the right height, sublime. I suppose you set the planner on a certain height when you measure the travel??? Different height gives different travel, not??? Thanks for sharing. Keep it safe, it is not over yet.
