John Hughes, definitely, "is the '80s" (more ways than any other writer/director). He actually wrote more movies than he directed (and you will know the majority of them. Indeed!). His (so-called) "High School Trilogy," of course, gets the most notice/is remembered the most fondly & widely [that being: Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club and Ferris Beuller's Day Off], but he has a retinue of other excellent and poignant films, in addition. I realize that this might [mildly!] "ruin" (🤦🤷) some things for you, but... Hughes, really, got his start writing for: The National Lampoon (which, in case you do not know: was a periodical; A magazine which developed out of the Harvard Lampoon). Hughes wrote one or two things prior (movie-wise) to this, but he, really, got his 'big break' writing the film: Vacation (or, more correctly: National Lampoon's Vacation (With Chevy Chase and Beverly D'Angelo -as well as: Anthony Michael Hall, who would, later, feature in a great many of Hughes nest-known '80s films!) and the rest...). Vacation was, actually, an expansion and modification of a piece he had written for The National Lampoon. He also wrote the 2nd film [National Lampoon's European Vacation]. Of course, these were: "in his tenor," but much more "slapstick"-y and "simply odd" (for the time-period) than the tenor of his later films [The "High School Trilogy" and beyond-These had more "heart" and melodrama and featured slightly less (or: mildly different versions of🤷) 'over-the-top' humour and more: instigation of character and observation of behavior and psychological truths (on which characters behaviors are, usually, based) ...but, still, with a wherewithal to broach/use insouciant humor!]. John Hughes had a 'secondary tier' of "high school movies" in the '80s, as well: Weird Science (more of his odd, exaggerated, comedy-but "timely"), Pretty In Pink and [the also very effective, too-little-viewed/-acknowledged, teenage melodrama] Some Kind Of Wonderful; (which he, initially, intended to direct, but: did not, in the end). ...Hughes is, also, responsible for writing the Home Alone movies (all 3 -well I don't know if they did more after those 3🤷🤷🤦, but: Hughes wrote the: "original 3"); Beethoven ['the dog movie']; Career Opportunities and Mr. Mom (which I believe was Michael Keaton's first leading role in a movie.🤷🤷). and he wrote and directed (the excellent): Uncle Buck [which, also, has John Candy as the primary lead.]. [I believe that Uncle Buck was his last, actual, " '80s movie"🤷♀] ...If you are a fan of Hughes style and "voice," then, while there are stronger and weaker representations of it and all of his movies aren't "masterpieces" ...as a viewer, you will, likely find something to enjoy in most-if-not-all of them (in the end). 👍👍 [Hughes was born an lived in Chicago so: nearly all of his movies are based in the environs of -in and around- Chicago, or the suburbs/exurbs thereof]

The scene in question is one last conversation at a diner on the way to Neal's house; Del confesses that he's estranged from what few living relatives he has left, so when Marie died, he sold the house and chose to live on the road. He acknowledges how clingy he gets, especially around the holidays, and apologizes to Neal for putting him through all that. I think it was cut because it might have made Del a little TOO unsympathetic.

John Candy on screen is pretty much John Candy in real life. He was such a amazingly nice guy and naturally funny. I met him a few times when he was working on a movie near here and he was so happy to sit down with you and share some time. It's not until she sees Del on the doorstep and says "Hello Mr Griffiths" that she realises it's was all true and she had nothing to fear.

They say the final re-write is done in the edit and it is so true of this movie. The finale in the station had a 'poor me' monologue from Del that guilts Neil into taking him home. This did not work with tests, so they took some B-roll of Martin practicing facial expressions (luckiy the camara was rolling), and intercut it with scenes to make it appear he was remembering the journey and putting the pieces together. Then cut the station scene to fit that narrative. Totally the right call. (They also had over 4 hours of footage of Candy and Martin just riffing in every scene)

A little background you may enjoy from Steves perspective. Martin said he enjoyed working with Candy. “John Candy was one of the best acting partners I’ve ever worked with,” Martin said. “We had a really good connection. When the camera was rolling, we’d look into each other’s eyes and it felt good together. We had great timing with each other.” Apparently, the two stars improvised funny material together during a number of takes, so much that Hughes’ initial rough cut of the film ran more than four hours. / Steve Martin 'Was Weeping' with John Candy in 'Planes, Trains ... “John Candy was very sensitive and very complex and we really loved each other,” recalls Martin in part two of the documentary project from Oscar winner Morgan Neville (of 20 Feet from Stardom).Mar 29, 2024

I was fifteen when John Lennon died, seventeen when John Belushi died, and twenty-nine when John Candy died. I loved the work of all of these great entertainers, they were some of my heroes, and they still remain the most difficult celebrity deaths for me to ever deal with on a personal level. As for yet another John - John Hughes - he absolutely owned 80s cinema. He put out a constant stream of classic comedies and coming of age favourites that are still very much worth watching. These films include: National Lampoon’s Vacation (1983); Sixteen Candles (1984); The Breakfast Club (1985); Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986); Pretty In Pink (1986); Planes, Trains, and Automobiles (1987); National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation (1989); Uncle Buck (1989), and Home Alone (1990). Nine bangers in eight years. Not sure anyone else has that kind of track record in Hollywood. Because of John Hughes, I still have a huge crush on Molly Ringwald; a crush I will likely have until the day I die, which sounds all emo, but hey, it was the 80s, and the 80s don’t wash off. Uncle Buck stars John Candy who is likely the most beloved Canadian celebrity of all time. Candy was very versatile as an entertainer and was mostly known as an actor who starred in a string of successful low budget horror chiller classics which included the wonderful films: Doctor Tongue’s 3D House of Cats; Doctor Tongue’s 3D House of Wax; Doctor Tongue’s 3D House of Stewardesses; and of course his own Breakfast Club film, Doctor Tongue’s International 3D House of Pancakes. There was a project rumoured to be in the earliest of development stages that was supposedly set to be released in 1996 but sadly Doctor Tongue’s 3D House of Athlete’s Foot was never to see the light of day as Candy passed away in 1994. John Candy was also a successful and versatile musician. In the seventies and eighties he was both the drummer in the punk band, ‘The Queen Haters,’ and the lead clarinetist in the popular polka duo, ‘The Shmenges.’ Despite the obvious scheduling conflicts, both bands were highly influential, and very lucrative for Candy. The hit single, ‘I Hate The Bloody Queen’ by the Queen Haters was huge worldwide, and reached number one on the charts in Scarborough, Hamilton, and Edmonton, while also managing to be a real game changer for both the music industry, and the British Royal Family. Some of the above may or may not be historical accuracy or even the least bit factual. When it comes to John Candy, do your own research; you’ll be glad you did. Thanks for making videos eh.

We watch this every year on Thanksgiving. I tear up every time. Also love your honest breakdown of the movie at the end. John Candy from all I’ve ever seen and read was that guy - absolute sweetheart.

I grew up in Illinois. I lived 10 minutes from the motel where they drive the car into the motel. The motel is still in business to this day which is in Gurnee Illinois a hour north of Chicago. The you’re going the wrong way was also filmed on the same highway as the motel is at. You don’t see many Motels now a days. The other guy from Steve Martin in NY is also from Ferris Bueller’s Day Off which was the father of Ferris Bueller

Neal's house is about 30 min southeast of you in Kenilworth, IL. That scene where they get picked up in the red semi-truck is in Woodstock where they filmed Groundhog Day.

@@bossfan49 I used to work for a security company working on Prison Break 1st season. O one episode they filmed it on n Woodstock Illinois. I seen the area and noticed the town because of the movie Groundhog Day. When I got to the town I said it’s Groundhogs day lol a lot of girl crushed for Wentworth Miller were around and had to keep everyone away. At the time I heard he was gay. Wentworth is an amazing person and actor. Same with rest of the cast I met on the first season. I also met John Heard from Home Alone on the set of Prison Break. He had someone in a golf cart driving him through the prison. The prison been abandoned since 2002. It’s the oldest prison in Illinois. John was an amazing person to meet and very kind. All actors were very kind.

When Steve Martin is in the car lot at the STL airport you can see a hotel in the background; I used to live near there and could see that hotel from my bedroom window.

Totally enjoying watching you enjoy this classic. I stopped counting at 50 times watching this. In the theatre it was insane. p.s. I met John Candy at a recording studio in Toronto in the late 80's. We crossed paths in the kitchenette. He bought me a 6 oz glass bottle of Coke and told me stories of SCTV. It is in the Top 10 introductions of my life.

Planes, Trains and Automobiles truly is a timeless classic with great life lessons. It’s all about learning to enjoy all the events that occurred on a journey, looking back and laughing at the experience and above all, planning ahead and having a backup plan. I’m so glad more people are watching this film lately. I’ve been watching it annually for over a decade!!!

Oh, been meaning to recommend "Rain Man" (1988) if you haven't seen it (and I might already have suggested it in the past). Fantastic movie, with a great Tom Cruise in an early role, and an Oscar winning performance by Dustin Hoffman. Also won Best Picture, Best Directing and Best Script iirc.

Quick fact, John Hughes used that same house for home alone also. i liked the part in this movie with the first cab. Neil telling the guy 'you're a thief' to which he replies 'close, I'm an attorney'...love this movie. i must have worn out my sister's VHS version of it by watching it 22 times. (no not back to back) Also John Hughes is from Chicago and bases most of his stories or adds Chicago in some way shape or form. Thank you for the video. we watch this movie every thanksgiving and Die Hard for Christmas. as well as A Christmas carol. Miracle on 34th street. Frosty the snowman. Rudolph the red nosed reindeer. for some reason it doesn't feel like Christmas unless i see at least one of the movies i listed. (well die hard is after one of the others) we all miss John Candy as well as John Hughes. R.I.P. 2 legends. @Hold_Down_A , thank you for the video and the trip (literally, dang it Dale, your trunk again.) down memory lane. have a wonderful day everyone.

I love how Steve Martin is playing the straight man in this comedy! Usually, he's the quirky or downright crazy person, but here he's reacting to John Candy in that role. He's only pushed into zany comedy moments out of desperation.
