I remember seeing this in the theater over 30 years ago, I have seen this scene at least a hundred times now, it NEVER ever gets old. Just watched it now and literally had me in tears of laughter. Has to be the best set up to a gag in a movie ever. Hughes took this whole idea to a level of perfect comedy, incredible.

This has been one of my all-time favorite comedies ever since I was 7. As a kid I just thought it was funny, but as an adult I’m always so moved by John Candy’s speech in the motel and where he finally reveals to Neil that his wife’s been dead for years🥺

If this scene had been made 20 years later, then John Candy would have appeared as a computer-generated devil. I prefer seeing the actor in a costume, as it feels so much more real, especially with the laugh. There are just some things that a computer can not create!

I watched this movie with my cousin and we both laughed till we had tears in our eyes. A few weeks later, a friend of my cousin invited us to go shopping with his family. I thought the dad looked a lot like John Candy. I mentioned this to my cousin on the drive back home and my cousin started laughing. In the end my cousin rented the movie and watched it with that family. The dad was a very good sport. He actually loved the movie. I love this movie!!

This is one of the funniest sequences in any movie... Ray Charles on the dash board, the parka getting hung up, the wrong direction, the fire...and then right after that, the "camp" scene at the motel, getting drunk pff of the mini liquor bottles, reversing into motel, mashing out, and then the scene with the highway patrolman in the burned down Chrysler. It's pure gold.

In 9th grade I had to do a presentation on transportation in the United States. I thought editing together some scenes from P, T, & A, including this one would be a brilliant idea. My teacher disagreed and sat scowling in the back of the room. The other kids in the class loved it, though.

I remember this that John Candy's character Del switches to the wrong side of the road while struggling with his parka. But actually he goes down a exit ramp struggling with his parka gets spun around and then goes back up it the wrong way and back down the road he came. Damn Del.

Which I thought was fitting because the ending has Thanksgiving just watched it with my family after dinner. I love when he said "Some Joker Wants To Race." My estranged mother watched this movie with me when I was about 17. It must have been 10:45 when we got to this part in the movie- and we had such a time, that we rewound it to watch this part. We must have watched it three times in the row, half asleep and dying of laughter. Genuinely one of the funniest things I have ever seen. The gasping from Steve martin is very similar to how abbot and costello did shock comedy and it immediately reminded me of those classic bits. I feel like this movie is to comedy what pulp fiction was for the penny novel dramas.

I live in a small town with a very small highway so can anyone tell me why seeing the snow on the side of the highway help steve's character realise they actually were going the wrong way? Are highway lanes that go in different direction separate from each other?

Yes. It's generally referred to as a divided highway. There is a median dividing the two directions of traffic, and seeing that snow-covered median on the right-hand side tipped him off that they were on the wrong side of the highway.
