I remember seeing this in the theater over 30 years ago, I have seen this scene at least a hundred times now, it NEVER ever gets old. Just watched it now and literally had me in tears of laughter. Has to be the best set up to a gag in a movie ever. Hughes took this whole idea to a level of perfect comedy, incredible.

If this scene had been made 20 years later, then John Candy would have appeared as a computer-generated devil. I prefer seeing the actor in a costume, as it feels so much more real, especially with the laugh. There are just some things that a computer can not create!

This is one of the funniest sequences in any movie... Ray Charles on the dash board, the parka getting hung up, the wrong direction, the fire...and then right after that, the "camp" scene at the motel, getting drunk pff of the mini liquor bottles, reversing into motel, mashing out, and then the scene with the highway patrolman in the burned down Chrysler. We must have watched it three times in the row, half asleep and dying of laughter. Genuinely one of the funniest things I have ever seen. The gasping from Steve martin is very similar to how abbot and costello did shock comedy and it immediately reminded me of those classic bits. I feel like this movie is to comedy what pulp fiction was for the penny novel dramas.

Haha I have a Lebaron. Mine isn't wood paneled and its brown, but if it did have the wood paneling I would 100% get it painted bright green haha

I live in a small town with a very small highway so can anyone tell me why seeing the snow on the side of the highway help steve's character realise they actually were going the wrong way? Are highway lanes that go in different direction separate from each other?

Yes. It's generally referred to as a divided highway. There is a median dividing the two directions of traffic, and seeing that snow-covered median on the right-hand side tipped him off that they were on the wrong side of the highway.

Funny how he says he’ll take his parka off but has it on again in the next scene.
