Nameless Gavin Dunne 2013
Life
Spins into ceaseless coils
In constant toil we turn on torment's wheel
And death
Death is a jealous mistress
A kiss you can't repeal
But wait
Wait for regret to come
It will call for you
It will tear the fabric of your nature
I walk without a name
Bathe
Bathe in the lakes of fire
The snakes and liars of yore they wore your face
Endure
Friends on the path of knowing
Are growing in your space
But wait
Wait for regret to come
It will call for you
It will tear the fabric of your nature
I walk without a name

Try to experience it as a choose your own adventure book rather than a 'videogame'. Yes the combat isn't the greatest but it rarely ever focuses on that. It's all in the writing - the conversations, the beautiful, tragic musings of the characters on matters of life, death, the afterlife, philosophy, the nature of time and of being. Imagine it's a branching novel rather than a gamey game. Once you accept the slow pace and gradual narrative flow of Planescape Torment it opens itself up to you.

Personally I'd say the conversations and decisions you make *are* the gameplay of Planescape. If people were to criticize this game for having bad gameplay because the combat is bad but the storytelling and approach to it is exceptional we'd have to say the same thing about the Witcher III which most people seem to hold in very high regard with a frankly ridiculous amount of zealousness while it does practically the same thing.

I really wish they'd make another Planescape game. Not talking about "Torment" but "Planescape." Like, a story-driven dungeon crawler like Baldurs Gate or Pillars of Eternity, but set in Planescape. I mean, it's a setting where travelling to *literal Valhalla* is a semi-normal thing. Even the craziest thing the Bhaalspawn has seen pales in comparison to what TNO sees on a mundane shopping trip.

It's amusing. I was listening to your songs on a YT playlist while I do stuff in another window, because I like doing that, and Nameless pops up. I've forgotten about this song for a while, but now it was a huge change of pace from "Gordon Freeman saved my life" so I paid attention to the changing track. The first couple sounds start playing and I'm like "Okay, now how did Torment soundtrack end up in MoS playlist". When the coin dropped, I realised finally what a great song this is :)

The story for his game did and still does cut me right to the core. The idea of having to atone for sins you can't remember committing, of countless burning questions wiht no easy answers. I appreciated how it never told you what to think, but let you draw your own conclusions. Well done capturing that moody feel. Endure. In enduring, grow strong.

didnt even tell you the name, when you learn it... well when TNO learns it... a simple thing... a common name... so obvious you cant beleive you never knew it... yet finally, you know your name... (spoiler it is my belief the the name is the name of the player and the game is a sensory stone in the sensate hall)

May your chosen deity bless you, Gav, for creating a song for this game. It was my first cRPG and it has shaped my tastes in the genre forever and put Chris Avellone as my idol in the field of storytelling in games (and close to the top in storytelling in general). The best and the most heart-wrenching game I have ever had the delight of playing.

One of the greatest games of all time! And Gavin you have created a very fitting tribute to the Nameless One, the lyrics of the song fit him perfectly. I especially love how you've incorporated the - I dunno I call it 'organic' - melody of the original soundtrack into your own tune. As soon as the music started I said to myself "This is Torment!". Now all we have to do is convince inXile to make this the end game song to Torment: Tides of Numenera.

the writing and the depth of each character, not to mention the fact that your actions influence the game.. Planescape: Torment was amazing. Torment: Tides of Numenera isn't coming out for another year and a half or two years, but it's being developed by many of the people that developed Ps:T.. so I have VERY high hopes. thank you for all you've done.. the last few weeks, you've been going VERY hard! It's definitely appreciated!

I really like how you keep branching out into different styles. I especially like the drone chant in this one, and that middle-eastern style run of notes at the end of "it will tear the fabric of your nature". You really nailed that part. Also, this song reminds me STRONGLY of the Canadian band The Tea Party. If you're not already familiar with them, I highly recommend checking them out.

Time and again i think how much it blew my mind to play game, collect a series of experiences, involving action antithetical to what games normally entail. In mario, zelda, sonic, baldurs gate, fallout... Youre trying to not die, to save the world. In torment you are trying to regain the ability to die, to save no one and nothing.

I played Baldur's Gate 2 first, then I played Planescape Torment... It took me maybe about an hour or two to get interested in BG2, it took me just 15min when I got a gleeful smile on my face that the game allowed me to pretend to be a zombie, surprise the hell out of some monk by talking to him, snap his neck before he screams, and steal his clothes to get a new disguise.

A very unconventional song; it's unlike anything I heard before, unlike anything I'd expect from you - which, of course, doesn't mean it's a bad song. It's something so unusual that I had to watch it three times in a row to actually get a feeling for it. Great work man, great work as usual.

Funny you should mention that. While not a true remake Torment: Tides of Numenera is coming out soon. It's a "spiritual successor" featuring a lot of the same writers and developers but set in Monty Cook's new Numenera setting instead of Planescape. From what I've seen of the demo and preview stuff out there so far it's got a very similar feel.
