@@parakeetbudgie I know it's a bit of a cliche to say it at this point but Prehistoric Planet struck the perfect balance in that regard. They made the pachyrhinosauruses terrified, but because they were fighters rather than runners, they actually held their ground for a very long time until a particularly stupid individual decided to run, breaking the formation and inciting panic. They managed to show that the animals were scared while also not making them seem like punching bags. Not only that but the one that died was a slow one, implying it was weaker than the others meaning that the others wouldn't inherently be sentenced to death. They managed to make them not the "Guess I'll die" situation, while also avoiding the 'awesomebro' attitude and invincible stature. They were fearful, and they could be killed, but they knew that they themselves were dangerous animals that could fend off or kill a nanuqsaurus if they were strong enough or smart enough. A perfect and realistic balance. It was beautifully done.

What I probably like the most about PD are the black and white segments when they discuss certain discoveries that prove what happens in the show. They could have gone the easy route and have some paleontologist talk about dinosaurs in front of some dusty bone for 5 minutes between each CGI segment like most other documentaries do, but they actually took a more interesting approach that still teaches you stuff without boring the fuck out of you.

Well Raptor, in defence of the Daspletosaurus and the troodontids: That tactic worked because they attacked either at night or at the dawn of the storm, using the darkness and the noise of the storm to hide themselves from the herbivores and causing chaos to split the herds and expose the weak. And Besides as the documentary shows that didn't exactly work that well since the edmontosaur managed to defend the calf the troodontids were after and most of the centrosaurus fended off the Daspletosaurus, with only 2 being killed by the tyrannosaurs And as for the "Last Killers" part, they Are refering to the non avian dinosaurs

This is a great review! I will defend these things though: The female Majunga was probably desperate for food, as the segment took place in a drought. Also, the male had threatened her baby. The Troodons did charge into the herd, yes, but the real sin would be if they were to attack an adult, which they didn't. I assume they were trying to break it up so they could target a juvenile, which they do.

@@LMS5935 I'm not trying to put you down personally or anything, but I really don't get why people love this documentary so much. I looooved dino docs when I was a kid, and I did just about everything in my power to get my hands on as many dino docs as possible, but somehow I missed this one when I was younger. I recently watched it for the first time, and I have to say I was really disapointed. I really disliked the cg background, which made it feel much more like a low budget animated special than a proper recreation of prehistory. They reused the same sound effects for basically every dinosaur, and it's not subtile at all, litterally every large carnivore has the exact same sound. The same is true with every midsieze to large herbivore (excluding sauropods), every pterosaur, and every small dino. The dinosaurs moved very robotically (much more so than the very realistic and believable movements we got in the Walking With series, which was made by the same people, and is almost 11 years older), so as a result I never got that "wow these were actually what these animals were like" feeling that I got from some of the better dino docs from the early 2000s, and all the show ever focuses on is how preditors would've killed prey, which gets boring quickly, and makes all the episodes feel very repetitive. But worst of all by far is the camera movements. Whoever it was who sugested that the camera should always be chaotic, shaky, zooming in and out all the time, and moving around like crazy, should've been fired on the spot. The way the camera moved made the show borderline imposible to watch. The scene where the carcharodontosaurus fight is the worst offender. The camera is shaking like crazy, zooming in and out all the time, and is flying all over the place. The audience isn't given a single moment where the camera just sits still and we're permitted to see what the heck is actually happening in this fight. For me, Planet Dinosaur doen't even break into my top 10, let alone my top two.

Very interesting hearing about what Microraptor's color actually was, because I heard that a similar study was done for Archaeopteryx in around 2015. Growing up, when I saw images of Archaeopteryx, it was always portrayed as being very brightly colored and having a wide variety of colors as well, almost like a parrot. Well, this study blew that theory completely out of the water. It showed that Archaeopteryx was primarily black with some patches of grey or silver.

Scavenging Rugops is in no way the fault of the filmmakers = this hypothesis comes from Paul Sereno who described the animal (and is presented on his own Uni.Chicago website). He claimed that the skull is unusually lightly built for such a large predator. From a 2004 interview = "It's not the kind of head designed for fighting or bone-crushing," Sereno said. Instead, he believes Rugops was a scavenger, using its head to pick at carrion rather than fighting other animals for food.

well, when you're done with doccos, maybe you can delve into Dino written fiction; I am currently grinding thru a novel called Dinosaur Summer. The premise is that Dr. Challenger actually DID find dinosaurs on that Plateau in Venezuela. Now decades later, the public is bored with dinos so the last surviving Dino circus is taking their animals back 'home' with a father/son journalist team and a group of film makers (Merian Cooper, WIllis Obrien and Ray Harryhausen, among others) to record the adventure.

Good video as always. This is one I enjoy even if it made some mistakes. The biggest mistake it makes from an entertainment point of view is that the program is simply one chase or fighting scene after another. Walking with Dinosaurs and March of the Dinosaurs did a great job balancing out chase/fight sequences with more scenes of the animals mating, sleeping, or migrating. This presents a more balanced view of these creatures lives. The trailer for the upcoming Prehistoric Planet also seems to understand this with a father rex just chilling on the beach with his hatchlings instead of hunting or fighting. It also was made on a third the budget of Walking with Dinosaurs and you can tell. Despite coming out 12 years later the animation isn't that much better. Both it and March of the Dinosaurs I think were wrong to be fully Computer animated when live action backgrounds just work much better most of the time and give the scene more authenticity. By 2011 standards the creatures not only look shrink-wrapped as hell sometimes but also move in a jerky unnatural way. Probably the best that could be done with the limited budget but its a shame the BBC didn't put more money into this one.

@@starzilla624 Yeah that is evident. Its another reason I am really looking forward to Prehistoric Planet. Its said to have the largest budget of any paleo documentary ever made and has been in production for nearly 3 years. It also returns to the much more sensible habit of placing its CGI creatures against live action backgrounds. So I am very hopeful it is the true spiritual successor to Walking with Dinosaurs that I have wanted for the past decade

@@grimats4431 No, I'm not talking about that, I'm talking about making the fewest errors even when taking into account the contemporary theory. I mean look, Walking with Dinosaurs was great, right? But even at the time, it got stuff that was blatantly wrong even in the face of what was known with fair certainty. If you look into these reviews done by this channel and others, Dinosaur documentaries frequently get things wrong that even at the time they had no reason to get wrong. I have more faith in this production, not only because of its obviously incredible production value, but because of how they've already treated the animals. Young T-Rex's have feathers, adults don't. Accuracy. T-Rex doesn't roar, it makes low grumbling sounds and hisses, accurate. Shrink-wrapping? Nowhere to be found. And I have faith in this production because the team of Planet Earth, Attenborough included, they care about getting things right, they care about showing the natural world for what it is, like I have yet to see a person more passionate about nature than David Attenborough. That's why I think this will be for all times the most accurate we've seen.

I'll defend the Majungasaurus being bloodthirsty here because she only attacked after the male scared one of her babies, and thus her maternal instincts labelled him as a threat, and we all know how vicious mothers can be. Can't defend the Troodons or Daspletosaurus gang though, that was just silly

@@redraptorwrites6778 Yeah, there would be no outdated section, and the problem section would only take 1 minute if you stretched it out. I’d say the best way to do it is covering each episode in different segments, giving them all an individual % grade, and then average them together for the letter grade. I already know it’s going to be an A- at the very least, maybe it could be the first A+.
